Spring Seller Update: New seller standards reward great service

Dear (my ebay user name):

Updates coming to seller performance standards will recognize and reward sellers who are most responsible for keeping buyers on eBay.

Starting with the regularly scheduled August 20 seller evaluation, a new measurement, your transaction defect rate, will replace the current four detailed seller rating requirements used to evaluate your seller performance.

Your defect rate is simply the percentage of your transactions over the most recent evaluation period with one or more of the top predictors that a buyer will leave eBay or purchase less, such as an opened eBay Money Back Guarantee case, a return because the item wasn't as described, or negative or neutral feedback.

As of the last seller evaluation on February 20, your defect rate is above the 5% maximum expected of eBay sellers. I encourage you to start now on some focused improvements to lower it.

A low defect rate is important because it indicates whether your buyers consistently receive the item they expect, when they expect it. Buyers won't see your defect rate, but eBay will. With a defect rate higher than 5%, your listings won't have an optimal position Best Match search results. You may be also be notified of limits or restrictions to your selling privileges when the new requirement takes effect August 20.

I know you want to provide great service to your buyers. Please take some time to get familiar with the new performance standards—especially tips for maintaining a low defect rate.

Track your status in your new seller dashboard
Starting the week of April 16, you'll get an up-to-date preview of how you're tracking toward the new standards in your new seller dashboard. Your dashboard will be fully updated with the new standards on August 20.

Where to focus based on your recent selling
In the meantime, based on your recent selling history and the factors included in the new defect rate, pay special attention to these basic services all buyers expect:

Be sure to upload valid tracking information when you ship—that means that eBay has access to at least one package scan. This is your best protection in the event of a case for item not received or a low rating for ship time. Also, starting with the August 20 evaluation, to meet the tracking upload requirement for Top Rated Sellers, 90% of your tracking numbers must have a carrier scan that is validated by eBay.

Note, only tracking numbers from USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Global Express are validated with scan information. Take a minute to review the services offered by these carriers. You may also want to take some extra care to make sure you're entering the numbers accurately.

The best way to ensure you meet this requirement is to print your shipping labels on eBay. You get discounted rates and tracking is uploaded to eBay automatically.

Note, the new defect rate is designed simply to identify transactions where something was not quite right. Each transaction can only count once toward your defect rate, regardless of the number of defects associated with it. When your buyers consistently get the items they expect when they expect them, your defect rate will reflect it—so focus on the basics of good customer service.

Capture sales with easy returns
Recent and future updates to eBay hassle-free returns—including a clear message to buyers on your item page—makes it easier than ever to win more potential sales with your confidence-inspiring return policy.

Category and item specifics updates
As always, changes to categories and item specifics are included with the rest of seller updates. Changes are coming the week of April 7 in these categories.

I have one negative feedback in the last seven years of ebay. I make huge use of ebay. It apparently now is up to ME whether they stay on ebay or not? Apparently that makes me below the threshold. I also have to use THEIR shipping labels if I want to remain in the top results? Get the fuck out of here Ebay.

i dont sell on ebay, may as well give my items away since most buyers charge back and or scam you for both the item and the money (of course paypal makes this super simple to accomplish)

I used to sell on eBay until the Asian fraud sector took it over. I couldn't compete with their volume and their prices for jewelry they were touting as the real thing...I ordered it and it was fake and eBay did nothing because they were super huge sellers. I sold only real authentic pieces and was put out of business by these sharks that sold pieces of shit to stupid American people that were too dumb to know the difference until it was too late.. Plastic, glass, cz, silver over copper, you name it.....They can sell it very cheap and in high numbers. eBay did NOTHING...Now they are paying the price. I seen an ad, for eBay...Only you can make eBay a comeback...FUCK THEM...

That's all fine and good if you want to quit eBay but really what are your other options?

I mean that sincerely. I used to sell a craplosd of stuff on eBay. I am a great shopper who gets bored easily - eBay was a great place to find new homes for my treasures and recoup a nice percentage... It was win win for everyone - including eBay and UPS... But then eBay tried to pivot itself from the upscale "internet garage sale" place to more of a new product-Amazonish marketplace. Looking at their stock prices, I think that was a big mistake.

I stopped the practice several years ago after the seller fees and hoops to jump through became too prohibitive. Our accountant did a cost benefit analysis and I found out by donating I was getting back in tax benefit enough to make it worth it. Only about 50% but still a lot less hassle...

I didn't have to pay tax on the "income" because it was personal resale. Can't imagine that if someone is doing it as a business eBay is even worth it anymore.

I agree - "power sellers" were the worst thing to happen to eBay. When I still bought on there, I avoided them like the plague.

I started selling on eBay in 2000. I quit last year. They forgot it was the sellers who built eBay. We wrote the code back then...before it was user friendly. We taught the newbies thru the forums, we knew what worked and what didn't. We were eBay. Then they did the organized destruction of the system..."to work the bugs out" and to capture as many fee's...just like the banking systems.

Sadly...our country now resembles eBay. Our system has been destroyed with the same technique eBay used....and a new one is being put into place with all kinds of mandatory fee's, rules and sheeple requirements.

it is all going to tank...and I will never refer anyone to eBay again.

the "rating" of 5% is based on things I can't control, its the current outrage everyone is going ape about.

Business owners have enough things to worry about without a third party who gets paid giving you more grief.

Ebay sounds like the politicians, they have forgotten who pays their salaries!

Ebay is great if you have unique one of a kind items. The majority of people who gripe and bitch and blame ebay for everything are selling shit that hundreds of other sellers will sell at a lower price.

I've looked into all the ebay alternatives and none compare to ebay. Most of them get less than 5% of the traffic ebay gets.

Re: The new absurd rules of Ebay - "Unless you use every service we offer in every way, you will be punished"
I wouldn't worry about that single negative. As a veteran ebay buyer since the beginning, I always look at the feedback negative and neutral. Don't tell anybody but I made some early suggestions to improve security. But in the instance of
fretting over a single negative don't fret over it.
If I see a difficult seller and many negative responses about a buyer I'll move on...or query the seller about the item. I pass on items where.
1. seller fails to communicate in a timely manner.
2. pictures that misrepresent the item. For instance new pair
of sunglasses where a seller takes great views but doesn't show the glasses opened up with a view of the sides of the frames. I think they do that because they know us veterans can spot counterfeits/repos a mile away.
3. Not answering my questions in detail. Ignoring my queries I'll move on.
4. Sellers who say the provide tracking and don't submit it to ebay need to be penalized for that. I'd give small sellers with under 500 transactions the benefit of the doubt.
5. The two biggest improvements for eBay. Their international polices favor the countries where the items are being sold.
For instance - ebay seller -- GLOOKE è lo SHOP ONLINE.
They're an Italian company good communication but 99.999% of their feedback are from Italians? Their negative feedbacks are from English speaking countries. So there is a language barrier defect in how they transact with English ebay buyers.
Remedies? A. ebay needs to make sure the foreign sellers can pass an ebay standard, yes a small test that shows they are proficient in transacting in english. Furthermore, using the same Italian ebay seller as an example. I notice that they are affiliated with TRUCKPOOLING.IT? There is no guarantee of tracking an item once it leaves Italy. Of course the gambit applies to all foreign sellers.
The Best experience in terms of ebay communications I've had are --
1. The Japanese (very professional)
2. The British (occasionally Jamaica, but treading water on this one)
3. The French, Canadians and Germans.

Finally, I'd like to see ebay sharpen their search functions. When I say a specific search don't try to sell
me a fucking car. It frustrates me and I leave the site.
Don't waste my time. Also get rid of the HIGH NEGATIVE drop shippers. And give more credence to the beginning seller.
Although I will say ebay is getting better in giving the really small potatoes sellers by bringing their items more visibility thus giving them a chance to prove themselves.

Oh and one biggie -- item switching protection -- protection
for the seller. Let's say you have an extremely rare coin.
There needs to be selling protections to prevent a buyer from returning a lesser graded item. In terms of selling of collectibles this is one of the biggest holes with selling on ebay that needs to be patched up.

That's weird, I have 1 negative and have had some problems recently with missing packages or slow shipping and I'm under the 5% according to egay. Hah. I laugh in your general direction.

Sadly i do most of my business on ebay.

Craigslist it is, i suppose....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18989740

To me Craigslist is the worst... Local rednecks (or worse) coming and pawing through your crap trying to nickel and dime you down... Thinking they can get prada or coach at target prices...

Depends on what you sell I guess...

I got the same email. I have 100% positive feedback, had no returns and offer the money back guarantee. Yet they say I have a rate over 5% too. Ebay is a difficult place to make money. I don't sell on their like I used to. Kept getting ripped off and was always out shipping.

I started selling on eBay back when you could buy and sell guns ('97?)...

When I started, Aauction #'s were six digit...

I stopped when they forced sellers to take PayPal...

Then you'll LOVE this:

PayPal now requires you to link your BANK ACCOUNT up before you can "GET VERIFIED" even though you already have a credit card as payment on file.

So....yeah...they can BOTH suck it.
