America and Russia today launched rival military exercises amid simmering tension over Crimea.
The guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun with 300 crew joined manoeuvres with the Bulgarian naval frigate Drazki and three Romanian vessels in the Black Sea.

The drills were being staged across the water from the Crimean peninsula where Russian military groups have seized control from the Ukrainian authorities. Russia is staging a huge exercise by its airborne troops as a former close aide to Vladimir Putin produced a map predicting the Kremlin aims to seize Ukraine’s entire coastline on the Black and Azov seas.

Ukrainian border guards already say that they are under siege from Russian “agent provocateurs”, who are reportedly being sent to destabilise eastern and southern regions of the ex-Soviet state.

Russia’s three-day military exercise, the largest for two decades, involves a vast “landing operation” by thousands of paratroopers.  The soldiers, based in Ivanovo, east of Moscow, were put on high alert and moved to unspecified locations to “check readiness” in simulated combat conditions.
