Peru tells Machu Picchu tourists to keep their clothes on
Peru has increased surveillance at popular archeological sites to counter a new trend of tourists taking nude photos at Machu Picchu.

Tourists have been posting the naked pics on blogs, prompting a statement from the cultural ministry rejecting “any disrespectful act committed by visitors” to the historical sites.

“We have redoubled efforts for continuous surveillance and monitoring of the site,” so security personnel can intervene to stop the exhibitionist photography, it said.

The ministry called on visitors to help protect the historical sites and to “be alert to this kind of attitude that’s solely aimed at getting attention.”

Authorities are also worried over a recent spate of graffiti attacks.

Last week, the famous 12-Angle Stone — an example of intricate Incan masonry and design — was hit with spray paint, police said. The suspect has been fingered in several other attacks on archaeological sites, they added.

Why does it matter if people do that? The people who lived there were practically naked.

I have set up a historical site at my house called Titus Vaginass. Any suitable female that wants to come over for naked pics is more than welcome. You'll probably save on airfare.

there has been some controversy in Swiss Alps, that German hikers often do this naked. Seems as though some Swiss children groups (school outings, I think) have encountered the naked German hikers, and the Swiss being a bit more conservative-minded..............

Re: Peru tells Machu Picchu tourists to keep their clothes on
I am all for nakedness but there is a time and place for it and it isn't in someone else's country at an important archeological site attracting visitors from all over the world. Being polite and respectful while a guest at someone else's place is basic manners. Not all nakedness is attractive and what about children seeing stuff?

If there is a large enough market for nude tours then they could designate a nude day for the tourists. Every other Tuesday or something like that.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22240525

It matters because most people believe that it is approriate to wear clothes in public. Rather you believe that or not is up to you; however, there are families who do not go around nude in front of their children, etc and it is respectful to behave modestly in public.

When people take nude pictures at a specific site and then post them for the world to see, that site can easily become a silly, get naked picture site and the true significance is diminished.

Believe it or not, some people believe in respectful behavior and some people are tired of the liberal, exhibitionist etc getting their way.

Maybe, the other side needs to take a stand once in a while before the naked exhibitionist who obviously don't "get it" totally take over.

That's why it is important among other things.

Actually, public nudity is illegal in most places in the western world. Maybe you should look up the functions of skin pores, because I think you are off the beam there.

Modern Peruvians, including and perhaps especially the indigenous people that make up the bulk of the population on the Altiplano, are very conservative and modest people.

They also have a major monetary stake in their tourism industry, of which Machu Picchu is the crown jewel of course.

If people are taking their clothes off there, I'm sure the agency in charge of the site wants to nip this in the bud on the grounds of "give them an inch and they'll take a mile".
