Founder of Chinese Human Rights Website Arrested
Police have detained the founder of a human rights website and at least four writers after the site reported on a self-immolation in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and a defacement of Mao’s portrait there.

Amnesty International reported that Huang Qi, the founder of the human rights website 64 Tianwang, was detained in Chengdu after a raid by 11 police officers Thursday afternoon. Police confiscated computers, mobile phones, and USB sticks, Amnesty said.

“There now appears to be a concerted campaign of intimidation by the Chinese authorities against those associated with the 64 Tianwang website. Once again the authorities have shown their intent to stifle debate on human rights within China,” said William Nee, China researcher at Amnesty International.

“These are spurious charges against Huang Qi and others detained solely for their work for 64 Tianwang. They must be immediately released,” Nee said.

Last weekend three volunteer journalists who had reported on the sensitive issues of the self-immolation and the Mao defacement for 64 Tianwang website were taken away and detained by the police...

Re: Founder of Chinese Human Rights Website Arrested
Huang Qi is a pretty brave guy. He knew they would come for him again, and they did.

----

Initially the mission of the organization was to help counter human trafficking that had become a swelling problem in the late 1990s, but later it was expanded to include campaign against human rights abuse. Huang is also the owner and webmaster of 64tianwang.com , a website originally intended to release news about people who had disappeared in the People's Republic of China.

Huang was imprisoned by the government from June 2000 to June 2005 and again arrested in July 2008 for "illegal possession of state secrets" after he helped the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. In November 2009 he was sentenced to three years of imprisonment. He was subsequently described as a political prisoner; Amnesty International described him as a victim of vague state secrets laws.

The website isn't being updated, but you can see a lot of pictures of the protests and arrests that are pretty recent in China, up to last week.
