You could delete a few exclamation points and periods and thus be able to explain Conakry as Guinea's capital.

I'm sure more than a few people have never heard of it... like me. "Radio Conakry" could be anything, and CKY,, doesn't help if you skip past the radio station's name.

Took me awhile to figure out what this latest update was pointing at.

Great thread though, thanks for the updates.

you need to come into phyiscal contact with a sick person to catch it..

Sounds pretty easy to avoid if you ask me.

Just stock up the bunker and hunker down for a few months.
 Quoting: ThesonofhendriX

Nope. You can catch it from surfaces touched by infected people. Whilst it is certainly easier to avoid catching than an airborne flu-type virus, it isn't easy to avoid, especially if you live in an urban area.

Think about it:
- Public transport
- Shopping
- Money
- Elevators
- Shared computers, phones, ATMs etc. Especially touchscreen things
- Traffic crossing buttons
- Public lavatories
- Swimming pools, changing areas etc.
- Crowds of people with sneezes and coughs

So, yeah, you can take precautions, but if this bad boy gets embedded in highly populated areas then it will be very difficult to stop short of shutting everything down completely.

As far as I understand it the reason that Ebola hasn't been a particular problem thus far is simply that it was, luckily, until now confined to very poor rural areas in Africa, where people mainly travel on foot (or at least very slowly - crappy roads, lack of efficient public transport, lack of private cars). This, coupled with the fact that it is so deadly that it can burn itself out quickly unless it can spread rapidly. I remember hearing several times experts say that if Ebola every made it to the big cities, and more affluent areas - especially to people who travel by air - that we would have a major global problem on our hands.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53990064

Sneezes and Coughs????

Correct me if im wrong but Ebola is NOT an airborne virus.

Yes or No?

It is easy when you have the internet, television, cell phones , medical professionals like we have, however in the villages of central and west Africa they don't have any of that, people get sick and there family takes care of them, buries then and take few precautions. In Guinea there are 0.03 hospital beds per 1000 people. Conakry is basically as much of a shit hole as you will find anywhere so I wouldn't be counting on anyone observing even minimal hygienic standards.
 Quoting: frostback

also consider that in Africa the markets are all open air.

Someone who is contagious would have many fewer opportunities to leave the virus behind, then in more developed nations.

e.g. they don't use communal shopping carts etc.

Re: >>>EBOLA 2014-15 >> Latest News and Updates for MERS, Ebola and other spreading nasties<<<
... some things are "unfixable"; and an outbreak such as you are describing is one of them. Effectively, you can't help anyone outside your immediate family without putting your entire household at grave risk.

In addition to having food, water, fuel, and ammo, you should dig a few burn-pits at the edge of your property, in case you need a way to quickly dispose of any <potentially> contaminated remains.

You don't ever want to leave remains out overnight in such a scenario, because any animal that consumes the flesh of a <potentially> infected body becomes a vector for the disease, and may likely carry it for an indeterminate amount of time - quite possibly the rest of their lives - without showing symptoms.

Familiarize yourself with Universal Precautions, and have the disposables on hand to practice them properly - exam gloves, full-length smocks, foot-coverings, and surgical masks with full-face shields are the bare minimum.

Over-gloves of leather or synthetic material are strongly recommended when handling contaminated materials, or doing work which might puncture or abrade through the exam gloves.

Every <potentially> contaminated body must be completely destroyed by fire, ASAP. Have several pits of proper dimensions dug outside your fence line for this purpose. Pre fill them with wood and brush sufficient to burn for at least 4 hours. Prime the wood with 1/2 to 1 gallon of gasoline or kerosene before placing the remains and other contaminated materials on top and igniting.

Every bit of material with which an infected person came into contact should also be destroyed by fire whenever possible. Otherwise, it should be decontaminated by full immersion in a mixture of 1:10 bleach solution. (1 part household chlorine bleach to 10 parts pure water). The immersion should last not less than 3 minutes, and the objects should be agitated so as to ensure that the bleach solution makes full contact with all areas, both inside and out. Dry by exposure to full sunlight, do not wipe with towels or cloths.

Porous materials, such as leather, canvas, burlap, etc should be soaked for a longer period, to ensure that the bleach solution permeates the material throughout.

Small items of metal, glass, or non-porous ceramic can be decontaminated by thorough treatment with strong alcohol, >90% strength, for at least 45 seconds (this is a good approach for items such as firearms, ammunition, and magazines).

For blood/fluid spills or splatter on the ground, or exterior surfaces of your property such as pavement, cement, fence posts and gates, etc, spray thoroughly with 1:10 bleach solution; or mist with gasoline from a garden sprayer and ignite (with all necessary precautions, of course) if bleach is in short supply.

Good luck...
 Quoting: BattlesightZero

There is a lot of misconception about how Ebola can and can't be transmitted, I even saw one lady say you could kiss an infected victim without getting infected...you don't want to try that at home.

This virus can live outside the host for 1-10 days depending on conditions, so yes, anything bodily fluids land on from a sneeze or a cough could be contaminated with live transmissible virus.

AND it only takes an exposure of 10 or so live virus to contract the disease.

When a family dies from Ebola, they burn down their house for a reason...
 Quoting: Saddletramp

Protocols to commit to memory, and things to do in preparation.

Got bleach and alcohol on hand? Gloves, masks, and disposable "booties" to cover your shoes?

All your other preps in order?

Fire pit and brush pile ready?

Have you had those tough conversations with family and friends?

Now might just be the time...

I know there has been a few posts in here saying it doesn't spread that easy, but the events being reported are saying otherwise as this is a very contagious virus.

Just a quick link to a report.

[link to bigstory.ap.org]

(snip)
CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Bakari Soumaoro carried his sick friend all the way to the hospital on his back, not realizing that the man's fever and chills were caused by one of the deadliest diseases on Earth.

A week after his friend died, Soumaoro himself fell ill.

Hospital officials soon determined that both men had contracted Ebola, a disease causing severe bleeding that had never before struck this corner of West Africa.

The point I am reaching, is this thing is nasty, if it gets out of there and spreads things will be bad, right now all we can do is watch the progress and see if they can get it under control.

Chances are it will run its course and stay contained, but that one little chance of escaping is always a possibility, that to me is a good enough reason to keep a watchful eye on this event.

I'm going to add some stuff to this.

What they are actually reporting is just the very tippity tip of the iceburg.

These are the cases they can't possibly deny for one reason or another.

We are talking about an area of the world where witch doctors are preferable to MD's and where ritual magic is considered a better treatment than washing ones hands.

I know I sound like a dick, but it can't be helped

People over there are probably worried sick. If they show symptoms, they are probably scared shitless of being wrangled up into some quarantine situation that they will never escape, never to see their families again. If people are sick, chances are their families are taking care of them in the privacy of their own homes, and going about their daily business in the larger world, taking their germs with them.

They know there's not a cure for this disease, that if they go to the doctor and are suspected of being infected they aren't coming home.

I would bet a years wages that there are many, many more cases than are being reported.

And on top of that, because the people in charge are in 'cover my ass' mode, they are keeping everything tight-lipped. They are more concerned about being right, not freaking people out, not reporting a false positive, than they are about containing this thing.

Which makes me think that they don't want it contained at all.

I mean, this situation is absolutely unprecedented. People who don't know what they are talking about will say it's not the largest ebola outbreak in history. The fact is, it is far more widespread and has infiltrated many more populous regions than any other outbreak in the past. The one thing about ebola that has kept it out of people's nightmares is that is has remained so remote, so fairly easily contained. This is far from contained, and I think the reason that they haven't closed borders and tried harder to contain it is because it's impossible. No one really knows where it started. We are talking about areas with villages all over the place, no real conceivable way of keeping people in place, of stopping them from behaving as they always have.

It would be a completely wasted effort.

I think they are going to let this thing play out, and I have a feeling it's going to be pretty ugly.

does anyone know any homeopathic/herbal/natural ways to treat or to keep from getting this crapola?

Forsythia tincture - use just the petals.

...and have you proven this be effective against Ebola or is this just another nettard search with no real world experience? the only references I can find are your usual self proclaimed healers...no real proof only carefully worded stories...

again show the proof that these petals actually combat the virus or rid it of your body. if not, you are just another doomass.

Okay, now you have seen the reports that have said that dengue is a close relative of Ebola virus. Dengue is common here in Thailand, it makes it round yearly. MMS kills it within 12 hrs. No remaining symptoms. I have had it myself, have given it to others as well with the same result, all symptoms gone with in 12 hrs. It works. MMS=sodium chlorite when mixed with an acid such as citric acid produces chlorine dioxide, a water purifier. It kills viruses on contact both internally and externally.....

Yes I agree the scariest story coming out today is regarding the "unrelated" case in Liberia. This would explain why we now have several clusters appearing hundreds of miles away. Its traveling among the fruit bats, and is most likely being spread throughout the region.

This means no possible ability to properly quarantine.

Yikes!

they got that from the movie Contagion.

a better option IMO would be to substitute Forsythia petals with colloidal silver.

you can add a small amount to beverages or use it with a vaporizer for the lungs.
