[link to news.sciencemag.org] "Get the measles vaccine, and you won’t get the measles—or give it to anyone else. Right? Well, not always. A person fully vaccinated against measles has contracted the disease and passed it on to others. The startling case study contradicts received wisdom about the vaccine and suggests that a recent swell of measles outbreaks in developed nations could mean more illnesses even among the vaccinated..." .... "That’s why a fully vaccinated 22-year-old theater employee in New York City who developed the measles in 2011 was released without hospitalization or quarantine. But like Typhoid Mary, this patient turned out to be unwittingly contagious. Ultimately, she transmitted the measles to four other people, according to a recent report in Clinical Infectious Diseases that tracked symptoms in the 88 people with whom “Measles Mary” interacted while she was sick. Surprisingly, two of the secondary patients had been fully vaccinated. And although the other two had no record of receiving the vaccine, they both showed signs of previous measles exposure that should have conferred immunity." Quoting: The Nihilist Côte d'Ivoire: 5 newspapers suspended by the regulatory body of the Ivorian Press [link to translate.googleusercontent.com] ***just reading, they were closed because of their ebola coverage!*** I'll take that as proof positive that we're being lied to. Also, as I previously pointed out, hand-to-hand goods will be tightly controlled in order to curtail the outbreak. They'll have to, or the effort is pointless. Think about it - one infected newspaper vendor, perspiring out in the heat of the day, selling hundreds of newspapers each day, and every paper contaminated with his virus-laden perspiration... In just 3 days he could sell well over 1000 newspapers. And each paper could potentially infect 2 people (buyer plus a second-hand reader, etc.) You see why modeling it is such a challenge... you're trying to describe many millions of individual human chaotic behaviors with rules-based modeling techniques. Remember these numbers. This is the range of time it takes to develop symptoms after someone has been exposed. With an international airport close by, that means you could be on the other side of the world before you develop the headache, fever, fatigue and joint pain which make up the early symptoms of an Ebola infection. The diarrhea, rash and bleeding come later. Hiccups is a particularly grave sign with Ebola. It means your diaphragm, which allows you to breathe, is starting to get irritated. There is a lot we know about Ebola, and it scares us almost as much as what we don't know. PARLEY, 14 APRIL 2014 [link to allafrica.com] Two health workers here are reported to have died from the deadly Ebola virus since its spread here from Guinea, the National Health Workers Association of Liberia or NAHWAL has said. As at Wednesday, April 9, 2014, the World Health Organization or WHO said Ebola death toll in Liberia had reached 12, with over 100 in neighboring Guinea. A statement read Thursday, April 10 at a news conference by NAHWAL President Mr. Joseph S. Tamba says two health workers in Foya Boma Hospital, Lofa County, Mr. Robinson Lenden- NA and Mr. James Daah-BSN contracted the Ebola virus and died while saving lives. The death of the two health workers has forced NAHWAL to advance several demands, including incentives and benefits for health workers across the country. Mr. Tamba who termed the death of their colleagues as tragedy said their deaths show how vulnerable health workers in the country are, adding that those who work tirelessly to keep the nation and its people healthy be sufficiently protected and not be allowed to die due to "unnecessary lack of such common things as examination gloves or soap and running water to wash hands." The Nihilist (OP) User ID: 55462400 Canada 04/14/2014 05:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Boston is set this week to debate whether to ban a new, downtown biodefense laboratory from studying some of the world's deadliest disease agents. A Wednesday city council hearing is expected to consider a proposed citywide prohibition on so-called "Biosafety Level 4" research, which can involve diseases for which there are no known cures. The initiative marks the latest local pushback against Boston University's effort to pursue the sensitive pathogen studies at its recently completed National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories. In his draft ordinance, Councilor Charles Yancey said conducting such research at the site could enable an agent such as Ebola or Marburg to escape into the city, either by accident or deliberate action. "I am not convinced we really need to invite that possibility to the city of Boston," Yancey told the Boston Globe in remarks published in a Sunday editorial. [link to www.nextgov.com] |
