Saudi Arabia MERS Update:

Case reports coming out of Jeddah continue to rise, with the Saudi MOH announcing 7 more cases this morning, two of which proved fatal. Two others are listed in intensive care, while a third is listed as stable. Additionally, two healthcare workers are listed as being asymptomatic.



This brings to roughly 60, the number of cases reported out of Jeddah in the past 3 weeks (see FluTracker’s MERS Case Line Listing).

I will also add, I believe all the others that died in that area, where they said not Ebola Zaire, was because the new strain didn'tmatch, so they said it wasn't ', when in reality it really was Ebola

that's a very good observation. This speculation would add quite a few countries to the list. It has been mentioned on this thread by a few posters, so others have the same idea. Welcome to the club. Now the paranoia is also yours.

I agree it is odd but what i don't understand is how some did and some didn't test positive...

A cluster of four health-care workers were identified through screening of contacts of a previously laboratory-confirmed case from Abu Dhabi who died on 10 April 2014. These include:
A 44 year-old man from Abu Dhabi who was screened on 13 April. He had no illness and is reported to have no underlying medical condition.
A 30 year-old man from Abu Dhabi who was screened on 13 April. He had no illness and is reported to have no underlying medical condition.
A 34 year-old man from the Philippines who resides in Abu Dhabi. He was screened on 13 April without any illness and is reported not to have any underlying medical condition.
A 28 year-old man from Abu Dhabi who became ill on 14 April 2014. He is reported to have no underlying medical condition.

The above comments from today’s WHO MERS update raises concerns that MERS is beginning to behave like the SARS CoV that circulated in China in the spring of 2003 and exploded geographically due to a superspreader who traveled to Hong Kong and infected dozens at the Metropole Hotel, who then transported the virus and created serious nosocomial outbreaks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Hanoi, and Toronto.

50% rule. But, Dr Niman allows full reposting of his commentaries, with proper accreditation. Anyone know if full posting of articles/blogs is allowed with permission from the author?

Because if the virus has mutated far enough away from the test "triggers", it will come back as a false negative.

For something like MERS or H5N1 or H7N9, if a swab is taken, that is a "shallow" test, and will return a false negative. A deep lung lavage test is necessary, as the virus tends to be deep in the lungs.

I'm not sure what I just found, but it might be interesting to dig further into it.

Not that quiet. I'm digging into Ebola today. I want answers on that Sakatoon man!!!! I almost guarentee he has the new strain and it is being kept hush hush. Last update I received was on the 28th he was still in critical condition with failing organs. Anyone think he still alive 3 weeks later??

Anyways, I tried posting this last night but for some reason my tablet wouldn't let me. It looks like the National Guard has ordered Ebola test kits for all 50 states: [link to www.youtube.com]

But now the question is, does it matter? If these kits do not test for the new strain, what good are they going to do?

And I'm really freaking out about the MERS/Ebola combo. I remember biology class and it was said diseases could form a brand new disease if the host is infected with both. So soon we will have an airborne respiratory infection that makes you hemorrhage uncontrollably. Hmmmm the coughing/respiratory thing would make it even that more spreadable huh?

How long before you think martial law would be declared once infection broke in the U.S.?
