SUBLIMINAL / ENCRYPTED Crossword puzzles blamed for violence in Venezuela

Brain teasers have triggered the alarm of Venezuela’s socialist government before. In May 2012, state television accused the biggest national newspaper Ultimas Noticias of trying to organize the assassination of then-President Hugo Chavez through coded crossword messages. Chavez died from cancer a year later.

The move comes as the government steps up its crackdown on opponents following several weeks of protests, fuelled by anger at economic woes and insecurity, which have left 35 people dead and threatened to tip the ever-volatile oil-rich nation into chaos. It claims the protests - under the slogan "The Exit", a reference to the departure of President Nicolas Maduro - are part of a foreign-backed coup plot and has already jailed opposition figure Leopoldo López on charges of arson and conspiracy.
