Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
In my sociology classes as an undergrad, we discussed in detail that people throughout history have had a desire to imitate the upper echelon of society, thus the reason that people have been so keen, and taken so well, to the idea of suburbs.

Everybody gets there own little kingdom, with a stable (garage), walls (fence), etc....you get the idea.

But my question to yall is this: Why do people care so much about mowing their lawns?

I just saw a commercial about a "cub cadet" drivable lawnmower or some shit and was just blown away at the superficial nature of everything they were advertising to.

I mean, I personally like the "natural" yards that I see sometimes, but when was it ingrained in our society that one has to keep their yard trimmed at all times?

And not only that, but if you want to be awesome at cutting grass nowadays, you basically need a grass cutting car.

What happened to the lawnmowers I slaved over as a kid? You know the ones with 4 wheels, but you push it? And why does it matter to cut the grass? Couldn't the ground used for something much more meaningful than the superficial purpose of planting unnatural sod?

Just please help me understand why people are so anxious to keep their yards awesome. Does it go back to the envy of royalty, bread into our bloodlines, which causes us to slave over stupid grass?

What is up with mowing?

I suppose one could argue that its superficial, but its also practical. Who wants to have to fight their way through a jungle when they walk out the front door? And never mind the possibility of attracting snakes, wasps, and other pests.

Well in my neighborhood the grass grows pretty tall if not trimmed making it a nest for mosquitos and garter snakes.

Enjoy grass fire but it does cost to have grass-less area. Doesn't matter much either way.

Totally understand that aspect, as well as the other pleasurable "plus sides" to keeping a yard neat...

But the people that walk around and enjoy their yards are a very small percentage, compared to the people who have them and just forget they even exist.

I would wager that the yard is one of the most un-walked spaces on a persons property. Most people pave where they want to walk, and rich people wouldn't dare let you walk on their lawn

OP, my ex husband was in the military and we lived in Holland for three years. We were the only ones with grass. Most yards were either gardens or paved over.

I heard once tall grass makes home values go down. And if you don't keep up with it will grow high, and nobody wants to deal with that. When its much easier to cut when its short. Those are my reasons.

Ehh, I do understand them, yes. I see the practical side as well.

But think about the population (total idiots, most of them) who have a yard, and don't even really ever realize it exists.

It is just another feature, like a third garage door, or nice siding, to them.

Interesting.....very interesting. Thank you very much. I see the purpose of the garden, and even the reason to pave over your property if you don't want to take care of it. Perhaps it is just an American thing.

Last summer we were laughing cause one of our neighbors didn't mow their lawn all summer. I think nobody was even living the house for some reason. Probably just went away for the summer. But the people next to them are obsessed with lawns. They get their's mowed twice a week. So they actually paid their lawn man to do the neighbors lawn once a week for the summer LOL.

One of my other neighbors who is retired says he mows his lawn 3 times a week. I'm never gonna retire.

So it is part of your "social contract" to mow your lawn? And you are implying that because of ease, and obligation to the mentioned social obligation, you mow your yard?

I'm not being a dick, I am just trying to wrap my head around it from a sociological perspective

Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
It's not just done in modern society. Keeping the grass/weeds cut low has been done for centuries. It helps keep snakes and rats from hiding close to the house. Also makes it easier to move around outside when you don't have to push the tall grass aside as you walk, with it brushing your legs and getting ticks and chiggers all over you.
All the old photographs of my /relatives/grandparents/great-grandparents posing in groups in front of their houses, or sitting out on the lawn, both farm and city, all show the grass cut short, just like today.
