two stories, one about a possible 7.5 because of the PuenteHills fault and a story on what to do in case of a major earthquake

Experts say a major, magnitude 7.5 earthquake on the fault could do more damage to the heart of Los Angeles than the dreaded Big One on the San Andreas fault, which is on the outskirts of metropolitan Southern California.

Nothing about possible tonight tomorrow or whenever...

just like an 7.5 somewhere in the world could do damage

"According to estimates by the USGS and Southern California Earthquake Center, a massive quake on the Puente Hills fault could kill from 3,000 to 18,000 people and cause up to $250 billion in damage. Under this worst-case scenario, people in as many as three-quarters of a million households would be left homeless."

I didn't read any dire warning for tonight or tomorrow, either...although I did expect to at least read some preparedness warnings, just in case. Nothing.

I wonder if those fatality ranges are from just the initial quake. I would think that 3/4 million households destroyed would create somewhere around 2.5m and up homeless people. There would be follow-on fatalities from that circumstance alone.

All manner of deaths from the very ill and infirm not getting their needed medical attention, to diseases taking root--cholera would be one of the fears--and running through makeshift towns and tent cities.

Of course they did. It's a major ongoing story here, so of course they're going to publish this, along with 100 other articles about quakes, to get readers to their website.

Here ya go.

And a 7.5 would be the "Big One" on the san andreas as the largest it can produce is about a 7.9.

I think they are full of shit. In the mid 1800's, the Fort Tejon quake ripped a crevice from the grapevine to San Bernadino in a matter of seconds. That is the I5 and 210 corridor, which when it gets over the grapevine, is some of the most densely populated areas in California. If that happened today, the death toll would be enormous. Ft.Tejon is on the south end of the San Andreas fault.
