arizona has housing developments all over the desert valley that can be secured and used as communities/save havens/sanctuaries. that is, if you feel safe living in a community during survival situations. they would be safe against rogue groups, but not so sure about governments.

IF you both like a specific place, go THERE, and don't worry about the best place for survival -- you can die in a car crash on the highway while going anywhere, you know! IF you (we) DO get advance notice of "the end" occurring within days (or hours or minutes), then my advice is to enjoy each remaining minute of your life as much as you possibly can, while at the same time remembering that in a very short time, you MIGHT be judged for your actions during your life on earth.

Going south to South America is a death sentence from endless bandits, criminals and murders.
Go north as far as possible. Colder weather will keep the hordes away and if you have a bit of gear then you can survive well in deep winter.

Volcanic ash, when airborne, is very damaging to engines; scouring cylinders and ruining ring seals very soon. If you are within a radius of 300 mi from the epicenter (my arbitrary #), maybe the blast will cause severe damage? I don't know, nor does anyone else really.

Your plan needs consider leaving in advance or in aftermath.
Obviously, a move to South America takes time to formulate and happen; unless you got $$$ to burn and could do it tomorrow.

If you have to bug-out in aftermath, be sure to have the best air-intake filtration, numerous spare filters and spares to do oil changes every time you change air filter. Got filters for your vehicle air circulation system. Best to run w/o fresh intake. Might want respirators as well.
