First was Christchurch New Zealand, with their big 6+. It was all over the news with how the city was in ruins, buildings had collasped, one of their most historic churches was destroyed... it is still ranked within the top 10 in most expensive property damage caused by earthquakes. Then exactly 1 month later, the Honshu Japan 9+ and Tsunami event... Oh right, lets not forget that in January, 1 month before the NZL earthquake, there was a 7+ in Chile. So yea, big Earthquakes in different parts of the world, CAN happen very close together. |

If I'm wrong I'll eat my hat, and dirty socks. Quoting: Bizarre Verewolf This often comes up when when people talk about earthquake activity along the Pacific coast of the United States. Seismologists have predicted that a massive scale (8.0 or higher on the Richter Scale) earthquake will shake the region sometime within the next 30 years or so. This is the so-called "Big One" that makes many Californians understandably nervous and inspires a variety of apocalyptic disaster speculations. Anonymous Coward User ID: 44523044 United States 04/02/2014 04:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i've got a question. I don't understand how there can be an "epicentre" to a quake if it occurs along a line...fault line. How do they determine this? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56339338 The epicenter of an earthquake is the exact location on the map that it originated from, when you have an earthquake it puts out ground waves in a circular motion, these waves are picked up by seismometers at certain locations where they have been installed to do just that..pick up earthquake signals and the waves arrive at each station at a different time because the stations are spread out over miles, the geologist just looks at the time it was picked up and then compares times with other stations, this is after he checks the magnitude and distance from his station that the earthquake occurred by using a chart that runs along side the earthquake monitor, he can then make a map of the earthquake waves (rings) all he needs are three stations reporting within adjacent areas on the map ...then he can make a circle that goes out however many miles away the earthquake was from his station and put a ring around the other stations at the same distance from their station..where the three circles meet is where the epicenter is, where the earthquake started...the fault systems run for many miles...so when an earthquake happens it is on one location of that fault ..it is not the whole fault vibrating at once just a small section where the earthquake happened. |

For those of you who like shiny maps, [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] Emergency and Disaster Incident map. If you look at the whole West Coast of NA, its glowing at the top (eq's w/ alaska with volcanic activity), Central (San Jose) and South (chile). I doubt North Korea tested a nuke the other and they registered a M4.x. Japan in general ( [link to www.jma.go.jp] it'd seem A LOT of pressure is being released across the globe or the Ring of Fire at least. Dont forget China. I said in another random thread that the 3 Gorges area had 2 M4+'s in 3 days recently. Sichuan had the 8s in 2008 and a M7 last year. Whats crazier for the date people is both of the Sichuan EQ's happened within 2 weeks calender wise respectively. So how does May 3rd, 2014 +- a week for Sichuan sound (lol)? |
