Chile EQ was not the Big one...Larger one to come.
Several news sources indicating that the 8.2 was not large enough and that Chile is still expected to have a larger quake.

One thing to keep in mind is if this wasn't it how large is the one they are expecting. If it was close you would think they would be relieved and think they had been bought more time. However from reports I've been reading they seemed more concerned. I'm more concerned about what they are not saying. Some reports I have been comparing the recent activity in Chile to Japan.

Another article going into a little more detail. It explained that in the Big one the surface will rupture and the two sides of the fault will slip past each other. Since this did not happen they are confident another is coming still no comment on when they think. However from some of the articles it seems that the concern level is extremely high. I leaves me with the impression they think this will happen soon.

The pattern of activity is very similar to the Japan quake according to the LA times. In Japan's quake it only took 1 month between the largest for-shock and the main quake.

What we should be watching for is another quake around the same magnitude in the next couple of days. If this takes place then it would continue to follow the Japan pattern. I would estimate it would be between a 7.8 and a 8.6. If that happens then I think we can be pretty confident that the "Big One' is coming.

Don't forget that the Richter scale was downgraded by one full magnitude in 1985.

Thread: AS I THOUGHT,THE RICHTER SCALE WAS DOWNGRADED.

So, a 7 is really an 8, an 8 is really a 9, etc.

Here is the difference per USGS: A magnitude 8.0 earthquake is 10 times bigger than a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on a seismogram, but is 31.6 times stronger (energy release).

There are several places right now that are at high risk. The Cascadia fault line, San Andreas, Puente Hills thrust fault and those are just the ones in one State. Worldwide the list is much longer. However it does seem that Chile has maybe given us a strong warning that should not be ignored. We know it has the capability of very large quakes the largest ever recorded in 1960.

IIRC the precursor quake in Japan was a 7.9 & the Chili was an 8.2 & could easily be a precursor but, if so, I hope that they are keeping the public informed & that they are either moving to safer ground now or are making preparations to do so.

It can cause a cascading effect on the San Andreas & smaller fault lines, not to mention the volcanoes, active or otherwise, along the West Coast, possibly even effecting Yellowstone & the New Madrid, seeing as its been yawning & stretching for some time now.

No idea if what was on TV in Vancouver was related to the Chile EQ but a seismologist stated that an EQ in or around Vancouver would be baaad news due to the layers of granite from the 40km depth up to the basin of the Fraser Valley which is mostly fill. She pretty said granite would amplify the force of the energy waves and when that force hit the filled basin, it'd pretty much turn a M6 into a M8 or 9. Good times to live here.

Ok so the new 7.4 is just shy of what I thought would indicate a larger quake was coming. So I'm not quite sure how to call it yet. It's slightly above typical aftershock but not quite high enough to make a determination.

Yeah, remembering the Japan 2011 quake I kind of agree with the fear the "big one" still is outstanding..... just have a look at the Japan Quake

It started on March 9th, 2011 with a 7.3M and 34 above 6.0 then followed..... this is the complete list I just pulled from USGS:

7.3 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 2011-03-09 04.45.20 UTC+02 32.0 km
(Could the 8.2M Chile quake of yesterday)

6.0 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 2011-03-09 20.16.16 UTC+02 22.0 km
6.0 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 2011-03-09 23.22.17 UTC+02 23.0 km
6.5 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 2011-03-09 23.24.01 UTC+02 15.0 km
9.0 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 2011-03-11 07:46:24 UTC+02:00 29.0 km
