This is not good for jobs, etc, but if you look at that list, there's a bunch of really shitty retail stores in there. Staples is consistently too expensive, radio shack gouges you on items. Look, I need this electronic part today, so I'll pay a premium. Oh don't have it in stock, sorry, I'll order myself. Oh, you want 6x the cost, I guess I'll just wait then. K Mart's literally smell, etc etc. This is bad retail getting trimmed off in bad economic times.

the collapse is accelerating.

You can see it in their eyes as they realize the jobs ~ the white collar, engineering, blue collar manufacturing, marketing ~ the jobs that left beginning in the 80s and into the 90s ~ were replaced with the service sector jobs ~ retail, restaurants, and other unsustainable band-aids. now the malls are closing ~ the restaurants too.

You can see it in the dead eyes as people realize it isnt coming back. its over.

America has been fundamentally changed.

Not all of these companies do business in my area, so not familiar with all of them. However, of the ones that do, I can honestly say I'm not surprised they are closing. Poor customer service, over-priced, poor-quality....I could go on.

Wilmington Trust went under a few years back, a quite old institution. Bad real estate loans, they said.

wow.

Are you from Delaware, Beeches?
I'm from "slower-lower" myself.
Though it was almost unreported in the media here, Wilmi-trust took 234 million from TARP--the honchos had all gotten, themselves, and approved for their cronies, big real estate loans on properties that were bubble-priced and the loan-takers were under water on.
They issued a lot of bad "commercial paper" too.
My sister-in-law is a teller there.
There is no recovery here in slower-lower--at the pharmacy, everyone in line is paying 50c copays--you know what that means--Medicaid--even the white folks--they apparently can still afford tattoos. And at the grocery store everbody but me apparently has a magic-money "Delaware" card--and those SNAPheads have full carts with pricey stuff I can't afford to buy in them

ARE YOU FREAKING OUT YET... ARE YOU FIGURING IT OUT YET?

And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

11And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

Re: Retail Tsunami: 16 Major Chains Closing More Stores
First off, Amazon has created a model for most businesses in this country that online retailing is the wave of the future.
What most people are not seeing is the businesses that are closing the old brick and mortar in favor of supply chain distribution.
The cost of having the old type stores vs that of an online retailing business where several middle management and minimum wage earning jobs are going by the way side in favor of low wage warehouse workers who are not involved in a union and individual with a more technical background in efficiency are being hired to replace those who worked in the stores.
There is a huge savings by shutting down these store aside from the cost involved in paying rent or taxes on a property they own.
I am sure that the NHCA has a major influence in many of the jobs being eliminated.
Now, Ralphs and a few other grocery stores that are closing their doors have as much to do with Unions as they do with the areas that they are located in.
I read a story a few years ago that many of the inner city grocery stores are plagued by loss due to theft, both employee and consumer. Yet local leaders in these communities had advocated that these corporations were discriminating against the poor and minorities because they wouldn't leave them open, thus forcing individuals to head to the suburbs to purchase many of the same products at higher prices.
When they asked leaders of the Black community here In Pittsburgh to purchase the store in their community and run it, not one was willing to do so. So it shutdown. Giant Eagle was willing to forgo the franchise fee and still nothing.
Barnes and Nobles can sell books online through their nook or apple products and its just as easy to ship the books to individuals vs having a store stock supplies and run coffee shops.
Sears/Kmart, Loehmanns, Quiznos,JCPenny and Toys R Us are just poorly managed companies.
Sears/KMart-JCPenny have never been able to make the jump from Middle Class shopper to today's version of Middle Class Shopper and there is a difference.
Staples-Office Depot/Office Max grew too fast
Radio Shack could have been a Best Buy type company in the 1990's but got bogged down by selling trinkets and specialty products versus seeing the big picture of where the electronic markets along with video games and televisions were going.
So, its not all economics as much as it is the way businesses are doing business today.
Retailers are will thrive under the new model with the exception of the older stores with an older customer base.
If I were a market man, I'd be buying into companies that deal in the transportation sector, FEDEX, Railroads, ect. Those are going to be the companies that will gain in this new electronic economy.
