Authorities are justifying the move by pointing out they are simply enforcing a 1993 rule change which prevents Bundy’s livestock from grazing on the land in order to protect the endangered desert tortoise.
Quoting: Loup Garou Ok, but how has this escalated so much. Forgive my ignorance, but shouldn't this go through a court summons or some similar procedure as opposed to an armed stand off? I don't understand how it's gotten to this point? Has the rancher threatened/done anything to deserve this kind of attention? To me from my limited understanding it seems as though the Bureau of Land Management is acting very aggressive(also, why would a land management dept. have snipers)... And lastly, how much are they saying he owes for this charge? [ link to rt.com] Pretty good article on the situation. The feds say he owes around $1 million. He stopped paying in 1993. He and his family say he only owes $300,000. Even Cliven Bundy admits this has been going on for 20 years.
