What would you do if a neighborhood mechanic did this to you? | |

Reverend User ID: 7193106 United States 04/29/2014 11:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well why would you expect them to diagnose the vehicle for free? They have employees, shop rent or mortgage, insurance, electric, tools and a myriad of other things that they have to pay for just to be there. If you were able to effectively diagnose the car yourself, why did you need a second opinion? You could replace the exhaust pipe yourself. |
Reverend User ID: 7193106 United States 04/29/2014 11:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You also stated that there was a low frequency hum that is heard while driving. So they have to take your vehicle out and listen for a non specific noise and then confirm it with you that the noise you are hearing is the noise that they are hearing... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 56583180 United States 04/29/2014 11:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Did you tell them you hit a big rock, damaged the muffler, and then heard a sound? Because maybe they actually took the time to make sure the rock didn't cause any additional damage to your brake lines, transmission, etc. Or did you tell them you need a new muffler? If so, you have every right to be pissed that they took your car and charged you to diagnose the problem first. It's like going in for an oil change and them charging you after an hour of looking at your car to tell you you need an oil change. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 53292706 United States 04/29/2014 11:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | First of all I agree with auto shops charging to diagnose a car. That is fine as long as it actually takes some time to perform the diagnosis. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57097601 Yesterday I ran over a large rock and I could see my exhaust pipe dented and of course their is a low frequency hum while driving so is annoying. I thought I would give some business to a local shop in our small neighborhood. I dropped and and told him I drove over a rock and my exhaust pipe is damaged. I asked him if they could tell me about how much it would be to fix it because I would have to budget for it since I did not have money now. So I drop by later as he said they would have some time. He said "it will be about an hour". I thought that was a little long but figured they needed that amount of time to work the car into rotation. So I hand out and walk my dog and a few minutes later I see a guy driving into the shop. I walk in and say "Hey are you going to let me see it". They said no because of insurance reasons I can't set foot in the auto bay. Ok so I wait and after 40 freaking minutes I start thinking "why the fuck would they keep it in the shop for 40 fucking minutes when I already told them what was wrong with the car". I go into the office and I ask them what is going on" and find out they are charging me for diagnosis. So I guess it was going to take a full hour because that was their minimum. So they put it in the shop for an hour but of course it only takes about 15 seconds to see it needs a new exhaust pipe. Fucking cunts. I refused to pay and told them to give me my car back. I drove away. Cunts! There is another popular auto shop in the city that never fucking charges to give people estimates as far as I know. Sure I guess if it is something that takes a long time they charge but mostly not. Seems like they did their job, not sure what you are upset about. |

Quoting: Reverend I told them I would have to save up some money and wanted an approximate price to fix the exhaust. The other shop I go to would have said "it will be about $200 depending on parts" or something like that. They would not have fucking put the damn car inside the shop for a fucking entire hour and make me wait just to justify charging me for an hour. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 57097601 United States 04/29/2014 11:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also I told these cunts that perhaps they should just leave it in and fix it and leave off the diagnosis charge. They said no to that idea because it would take about a week to get parts. So it would end up with being about $380 USD (including the fucking diagnosis fee) just to get a fucking exhaust pipe replaced. Not the muffler, just the fucking pipe. Fucking cunts. |

If you didn't have any money, what was the point of wanting a specific price? Wouldn't the other price work just as well? "about $200" sounds like you'll have to save about $200. The way you stated your vehicle problem would require a driving diagnosis to determine the location and the cause of the hum, then racking the vehicle to see the damage to the exhaust that you described. The diagnosis may even be more in depth if the damage underneath was more severe. Then on top of that, they have to call and get prices on parts based on their diagnosis and then consult a flat rate manual to find how long the repair will take them to perform. You want them to work for you for free. Were you even going to go back to the shop to have them perform the repair? Did you want a professional mechanic to diagnose the problem so a "shade tree" mechanic would do it at half price? Not being an ass. I used to own a shop. I closed it in part because of stuff like this. |

That's the kind of bullsh*t Pep Boys pulls on you too. ...nickel and diming you for unnecessary diagnostic fees, shop fees, disposal fees, materials fees.....etc etc. I usually do all this stuff myself, especially the simple stuff BUT....I learned my lesson on vacation one day for being lazy. .....an oil change and hood strut replacement cost over $200 bucks! The strut is $25 bucks normally....and so is the oil change. Should have been done for 50-60 bucks tops. Got ass-raped. Stick with good mechanics you know. ...and good mechanics you are on a first name basis with will not give you crap about insurance issues in the bays. OR better yet....do it yourself...as I usually do. Last Edited by Useless Cookie Eater on 04/30/2014 12:14 AM |

Yep, my brother is a diesel mechanic and he tells me what to watch for and the tricks they pull. There is no honesty or being fair anymore. It's all about how they can bullshit money out of someone or take advantage of those that aren't in the business. This kind of shady shit is in just about all professions but it stands out a whole lot more in some than others. |

You figured out how to use the internet, now use it to solve your mechanical issues. Leave the cunts at the mechanics shop out of your problems. If you have failed to obtain any basic tools, or mechanical knowledge up to this point, you can't complain when you take your car to a shop and ask them to figure out what is wrong with it, and then they give you a bill for actually working on your car. Working on cars is super easy. All the info in the world is at your fingertips. Mechanics make a living on other peoples laziness and inability to turn a wrench. |
