To defend the country that pays and loves him.

That's right! We just don't know either way. But that doesn't stop most people from thinking they know.

How would Dennis Rodman know the uncle and ex-girlfriend well enough to recognize them. If he expressed concern about it, any two people could have been pointed out to him as the uncle and ex-girlfriend.
Besides, North Korea itself reported the executions according to the linked article.
