I will open up a can of worms. Let me preface it with saying that I do NOT support anything the government does and would never want them in any way to be in charge of any decisions on personal health care.

But with that said.....

I don't support "death panels" but I do wish we could come up with a way to convince people that spending $1m on trying to save 90 year old mom is ridiculous! People are very unrealistic. Why put mom or granny through all of that??

A doctor said something to my dad and aunt that I loved. My nanny was on a vent with resp. failure and could not survive without it. My family was having a hard time doing the right thing. the doc finally sat them down and asked "are you doing this for yourself or for her? because if you are doing it because you aren't ready to lose her, that is the most selfish decision you could ever make". It was blunt but truthful. After that, we took her home on hospice and I sat by her bed and pushed the button on her pain pump for 3 days until she passed.

I work with geriatric patients. Every single day of my professional life I talk to people that aren't ready to let an aging parent go because they are not ready to let go. When they tell me they want everything done in the event of them not breathing/no heart rate, I go into explicit detail of how I will break every single rib and the sternum with my first compression during CPR. I they survive that, there is no way they will survive the broken bones. and people want it done anyway.

I have a patient that is almost 100 years old. He has cancer everywhere. His family is putting him through chemo/radiation/made him a full code because they just aren't ready to say goodbye.

the only thing I agree with Gates about is the need to curb these decisions based on emotions. I have no solution but would love to come up with one.

What he advocates and actively works toward is too horrible to contemplate in its terrifying magnitude. Yet, he thinks he's doing God's work.
