The secret night-life of a computer - Windows 7 is a party animal
Every night, exactly the same time my comp turns itself up and begins to operate.
Not just hums, but whistles, klicks, flashing light: it obviously doing something.
It works for an hour or more (never had the patience to wait it out)

Yes, I tried to stop it.
Went on power control, updates time settings and everywhere else you can imagine.
Does not help

If it isn't windows update, it is something you've installed.

Control panel -> administrative tools -> scheduler

There you'll find the cuprit

I googled it, and found some others with Windows7 with the same issues
What is going on? Updating cannot last for that long.
And who controls my computer? Me or ....?

Windows search indexer is another one that spins a computer up after it has been idle for a while.

Antivirus software is another possibility.

You are the only one, who did not understand what I say (I do turn off my comp every night of course, despite of that the comp turns itself on),

plus you use a disrespectful tone for no reason....what does it say about you?

I help you, you learn many things.....
Get your self a nice fresh copy of wireshark

[link to www.wireshark.org]

turn it on and leave it running when you go to bed.
In the morning you can have endless fun reviewing all the various IP's that your computer has communicated with as you slept.

It can do allot more , but I'm just a tarded redneck and don't understand all that techie stuff.

You ARE a tarded redneck.

OP these are processes that are default or determined by you. Defrag, Updates to the operating system or applications, and Anti-Virus/Malware updates are just some of the processes going on.

You can shut all of this off, but it is not recommended as updates are important especially when a patch is issued for a known exploit. If it is waking you up, simply change the time in the scheduler.

Just for your info:
A. There are two options in Scheduler to run these updates and other stuff:
1. Run only when the User is logged on
2. Run whether the User is logged on or not

It is set by default on option 2, and it seems there is no way to change it by the User.

B. There is a section to show the updates the has been run previously, but that section show zero, no matter what.

Re: The secret night-life of a computer - Windows 7 is a party animal
Long time now ago I ran a windows ME server and to my surprise, someone low level formatted my beloved machine. Course I had no firewall or anti viral shit knocker. I was in my glory running a web server and thought I was the smartest guy on the fucking planet.

Than, another time I had the machine on all night and around 2 am while in and out of sleep with art bell on, the machine exploded in a flash.

WOW!!!, I flew outa bed and went WTF. The power supply went critical and blew.

Now days, I shut the power of completely at the plug so shit doesn't happen anymo.
