NSA Intercepts, Bugs, Repackages Network Equipment Being Sold...
Nearly a year after he first met Edward Snowden, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald continues to unveil new secrets about the National Security Agency and the surveillance state. His new book, "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State," is being published today. It includes dozens of previously secret NSA documents, including new details on how the NSA routinely intercepts routers, servers and other computer hardware devices being exported from the United States. According to leaked documents published in the book, the NSA then implants backdoor surveillance tools, repackages the devices with a factory seal and sends them on. This gives the NSA access to entire networks and all their users. The book includes one previously secret NSA file that shows a photo of an agent opening a box marked CISCO. Below it reads a caption: "Intercepted packages are opened carefully." Another memo observes that some signals intelligence tradecraft is "very hands-on (literally!)."

If the routers and computers in our homes and offices are bugged, then receivers of our information know precisely our financial status and obligations, our whereabouts, our social, political and professional affiliations, our trading strategies, and of course, every personal detail. They will know in advance of our plans to organize to discuss, debate and perhaps act on government plans to cede more of our privacy rights to government and business interests. They will be fully apprised of legitimate political opposition that might organize to remove a government that has become too abusive, too secretive, or too unilateral in its exercise of office.

The Obama administration has accused China of hacking companies and Congress has questioned whether Chinese businesses tamper with telecom devices, but the National Security Agency may be using those same tactics, according to reports citing documents leaked by former agency contractor Edward Snowden.

The NSA obtains routers and other network devices being exported from the U.S., implants backdoor surveillance features, repackages the devices with factory seals and sends them to the international customers to tap into the networks of their users, The Guardian reports. The article cites a June 2010 report from the head of the NSA's Access and Target Development Department leaked by Snowden.

Responding to an email about the report, NSA spokeswoman Vanee' Vines would not comment “on specific, alleged intelligence-gathering activities,” but said the agency relies on the security of American-built tech devices.

Privacy tools: Encrypt what you can!
BY WT · MAY 8, 2014

Ever since Edward Snowden revealed the inner secrets of the NSA, he has been urging Americans to use encryption to protect themselves from rampant spying.

“Encryption does work,” Snowden said, via a remote connection at the SXSW tech conference. “It is a defense against the dark arts for the digital realm.”

ProPublica has written about the NSA’s attempts to break encryption, but we don’t know for sure how successful the spy agency has been, and security experts still recommend using these techniques.

And besides, who doesn’t want to defend against the dark arts? But getting started with encryption can be daunting. Here are a few techniques that most people can use.

Encrypt the data you transmit. The Snowden revelations have revealed that U.S. and British spy agencies are grabbing as much unencrypted data as they can find as it passes over the Internet. Encrypting your data in transit can protect it against spy agencies, as well as commercial data gatherers.

Install HTTPS Everywhere on your Web browser. This encrypts your Web browsing sessions, protecting you from hackers and spy agencies that scoop up unencrypted traffic across the Internet. Not every site works properly with HTTPS Everywhere, though an increasing number do.
