Whats with these "light-workers" and "ascension"?

Whats with the heaps of these "light-workers" who claim to channel(spiritually talk to) beings from outside this world or even dimension?
Their websites are scattered throughout the new-age spirituality community. They first mentioned 2012 as this "ascension" process.
To be honest, at first I was gripped. I followed these "channeler" websites to see where they were going. They seem to constantly mention "the event" or the "global currency reset (RV)" or "UFO mass decloacking". They mention dates to which nothing occurs.
I never truely believed in any of it. But I was always confused as to what the agenda of these "lightworker channelers" are. They don't seem to sell anything, for the most part. And there seems to be alot of these people all beleiving in some similiar idea of ascension. It is like some odd, scattered, cult beleif system or something.
Anyway, anyone have any thoughts on these people?
