On Nov. 19, octogenarian British Orientalist spook Bernard Lewis wrote an elaborate apologia for Osama bin Laden, a fervent pitch for the inevitability of the "Clash of Civilizations," in the pages of New Yorker magazine. Under the headline "The Revolt of Islam," Lewis lied that the emergence of "Islamic terrorism" in the recent decades, is completely consistent with mainstream Islam, which is committed to the subjugation of the infidels to Islamic law. He went through 14 pages of a fractured fairy-tale history of Islam, quoting bin Laden's Oct. 7, 2001 videotape, where the Saudi expatriate spoke of Islam's "humiliation and disgrace ... for more than 80 years"—a reference to the crushing of the Ottoman Empire by Britain and France in 1918. Lewis invented a tradition of jihad, "bequeathed to Muslims by the Prophet":

"In principle," Lewis explained, "the world was divided into two houses: the House of Islam, in which a Muslim government ruled and Muslim law prevailed, and the House of War, the rest of the world, still inhabited and, more important, ruled by infidels. Between the two, there was to be a perpetual state of war until the entire world either embraced Islam or submitted to the rule of the Muslim state." Among all the different "infidels" ruling the House of War, Lewis asserted, Christianity was singled out as "their primary rival in the struggle for world domination." Lewis cited slogans painted on the walls of Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock from the Seventh Century, assailing Christianity.

Lewis then claimed that the evolution of modern Islamic terrorism, specifically the al-Qaeda terrorism, had a long proud history within Islam, dating to the Assassins cult of the 11th-13th Centuries. (Lewis wrote a 1967 book, The Assassins, extolling the virtues of this secret society.) He also identified Saudi Arabia and Egypt as two regimes legitimately singled out by the Islamic jihadists, for their corruption by "modernism."

He concluded, ominously: "For Osama bin Laden, 2001 marks the resumption of the war for the religious dominance of the world, that began in the Seventh Century.... If bin Laden can persuade the world of Islam to accept his views and his leadership, then a long and bitter struggle lies ahead, and not only for America. Sooner or later, al-Qaeda and related groups will clash with the other neighbors of Islam—Russia, China, India—who may prove less squeamish than the Americans in using their power against Muslims and their sanctities. If bin Laden is correct in his calculations and succeeds in his war, then a dark future awaits the world, especially the part of it that embraces Islam."

Since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Lewis has, not surprisingly, resurfaced in numerous locations. After all, the 85-year old British Arab Bureau mandarin has been London's point-man in the United States since 1974, when he was posted to H.G. Wells' outpost at Princeton University's Center for Advanced Studies, to secure American compliance with British geopolitical manipulations in the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Caspian Basin, and Central Asia.

To put it bluntly: British intelligence senior operator Lewis is the guiding hand behind the ongoing U.S. neo-conservative drive for a new "Thirty Years War" in Eurasia. This drive is at the heart of the ongoing coup d'état attempt against the George W. Bush Administration, which began with the Sept. 11 irregular warfare attacks on New York City and Washington.

Lewis' arrival at Princeton, after serving on the faculty of the University of London's Middle East and Africa faculty (the repository of the original India House files, long officially referred to as the Colonial Department), coincided with then-Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger's fomenting of the civil war in Lebanon. That persists to the present day, and served as a laboratory for the later "Islamic revolution" in Iran.

Lewis is no mere British quackademic. After obtaining his doctorate in the history of Islam from the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, he joined the university faculty in 1938. From 1940-45, Lewis was, in his own understated words, "otherwise engaged," as a wartime British Military Intelligence officer, later seconded to the British Foreign Office. To this day, Lewis remains mum about his wartime "engagements."

Since arriving at Princeton, Lewis has been demonstrably responsible for every piece of strategic folly and insanity into which the United States has been suckered in Asia Minor. The Wellsian "method to his madness" has been the persistent push to eliminate the nation-state system, and launch murderous wars stretching across the Eurasian region.

* During the Carter Administration, Lewis was the architect of madman Zbigniew Brzezinski's "Arc of Crisis" policy of fomenting Muslim Brotherhood fundamentalist insurrections all along the southern tier of the Soviet Union. The planned fostering of radical Islamist war provocations was known, at the time, as "the Bernard Lewis Plan." Among the fruits of this Lewis-Brzezinski collusion: the February 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini "Islamic Revolution" in Iran, which overthrew the Shah, and sent the once-proud center of the Islamic Renaissance back into a 20-year dark age; and the 1979-1988 Afghanistan War, provoked by Brzezinski's July 1979 launching of covert support for Afghan mujahideen "Contras" inside Afghanistan—six months prior to the Soviet Red Army's Christmas Eve invasion.

As early as 1960, in a book-length study he prepared for the Royal Institute for International Affairs, under the title The Emergence of Modern Turkey, Lewis polemicized against the modernizing, nation-building legacy of Turkey's Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He argued instead for the revival of an Ottoman Empire that could be used as a British geopolitical battering ram against Russia and against the Arab states of the Persian Gulf—in alliance with Israel.

* It was Bernard Lewis who launched the hoax of the "Clash of Civilizations"—in a September 1990 Atlantic Monthly article on "The Roots of Muslim Rage," which appeared three years before Brzezinski clone Samuel Huntington's publication of his Foreign Affairs diatribe, "The Clash Of Civilizations." Huntington's article, and his subsequent book-length treatment of the same subject, were caricatures of Lewis' more sophisticated British Orientalist historical fraud, which painted Islam as engaged in a 14-century-long war against Christianity. Huntington acknowledged that Lewis' 1990 piece coined the term "Clash of Civilizations."

* In 1992, in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War, Lewis celebrated in the pages of the New York Council on Foreign Relations' Foreign Affairs that the era of the nation-state in the Middle East had come to an inglorious end, and the entire region should expect to go through a prolonged period of "Lebanonization"—i.e., degeneration into fratricidal, parochialist violence and chaos.

"The eclipse of pan-Arabism," he wrote, "has left Islamic fundamentalism as the most attractive alternative to all those who feel that there has to be something better, truer, and more hopeful than the inept tyrannies of their rulers and the bankrupt ideologies foisted on them from outside." The Islamists represent "a network outside the control of the state.... The more oppressive the regime, the greater the help it gives to fundamentalists by eliminating competing oppositionists."

He concluded the Foreign Affairs piece by forecasting the "Lebanonization" of the entire region, save Israel: "Most of the states of the Middle East ... are of recent and artificial construction and are vulnerable to such a process. If the central power is sufficiently weakened, there is no real civil society to hold the polity together, no real sense of common national identity or overriding allegiance to the nation-state. The state then disintegrates—as happened in Lebanon—into a chaos of squabbling, feuding, fighting sects, tribes, regions and parties."

* In 1998, it was Lewis who catapulted Osama bin Laden into prominence with a November/December Foreign Affairs article, legitimizing the Saudi black sheep as a serious proponent of mainstream, militant Islam. Lewis' piece, "License To Kill: Osama bin Laden's Declaration Of Jihad," showered praise on bin Laden, pronouncing his "Declaration of Jihad Versus Jews and Crusaders" "a magnificent piece of eloquent, at times even poetic Arabic prose ... which reveals a version of history that most Westerners will find unfamiliar."

Osama bin Laden released his 1998 jihad call on Feb. 23, 1998, six months before the truck bombing attacks against the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. The very next day, Bernard Lewis' signature appeared on a widely circulated Open Letter To President Bill Clinton, released by a previously unheard-of entity called the Committee for Peace and Security in the Gulf, demanding that the U.S. government throw its full support behind a military campaign to overthrow Saddam Hussein. The Open Letter called for carpet bombing Iraq, and for the United States to aggressively give financial and military support for the Iraqi National Congress, yet another corrupt and inept "Contra" pseudo-gang, created by U.S. and British intelligence elements, and based in London.

In addition to Bernard Lewis, the Open Letter was endorsed by former U.S. Rep. Steven Solarz (D-N.Y.), notorious Anglo-Israeli propagandist and spy Richard Perle, convicted Iran-Contra criminal Elliott Abrams, Jonathan Pollard fellow-traveller Steven Bryen, Frank Gaffney, New Republic publisher and Al Gore mentor Martin Peretz, Paul Wolfowitz, Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP) research director David Wurmser, and Dov Zakheim.

Lewis' public alliance at that time with the leading lights of the "Mega" apparatus—now waging all-out war against the Bush Administration's efforts to box in Israeli madman Ariel Sharon—is noteworthy, but not surprising. Lewis is lionized inside Israel, and by the Israeli Lobby in America as a geopolitical giant. On Feb. 19, 1996, Lewis was feted in Jerusalem, where he delivered the ninth annual B'nai B'rith World Center "Jerusalem Address" on "The Middle East Towards the Year 2000." His son, Michael Lewis, is the director of the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee's super-secret "opposition research section." He ranted on that America, too, had been colonized by another of the lost Tribes. "That was all predicted, that one would go to Hyperborea, the land of the north, and one would go across the sea. And so I think that America and England got the Two Lost Tribes, and that is why they then, in a very intellectual Jewish way, started to run the world!"

Lord Northampton is, by his own admission, a practitioner of the Satanic rituals of Aleister Crowley. Indeed, as he explained to an interviewer, Lord Northampton installed one of the world's leading "scholars" of the Golden Dawn cult, R.A. Gilbert, as the editor-in-chief of Ars Quatuor Coronarum, the theoretical journal of the lodge. Crowley had written an account of his "spiritual progress" in magic and Satanism under the title The Temple of Solomon the King."

"In December 1995, the "Jerusalem" freemasonic lodge was established, adjacent to the Temple Mount, in the Grotto of King Solomon, to work for the rebuilding of Solomon's Temple. The lodge worked side by side with the on-the-ground networks of Jewish and Christian fundamentalist fanatics, to foment a bloody religious war over the control of the Temple Mount. That such a lodge would be founded shortly after the Israel-Palestine peace breakthroughs at Oslo--and just weeks after the assassination of Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, an architect of that peace--is surely no coincidence.

The Jerusalem Lodge was founded by the Grand Master of Italian Regular Freemasonry, Giuliano di Bernardo, the right-hand man of Lord Northampton on the Temple Mount project. At the ceremony launching the Jerusalem Lodge, Di Bernardo declared, "The rebuilding of the Temple is at the center of our studies." In June 1996, Di Bernardo published an Italian edition of his book, Rebuilding the Temple, which was to be published in English by the Quatuor Coronati Lodge.

In interviews, Di Bernardo candidly admitted that he has constructed an entire irrationalist "utopian" belief system, centered on the revival of Jewish Cabbalism and the rebuilding of the Temple. "A new utopia may be based on the Cabbala. I see a utopia based on Jewish mysticism, but Jewish mysticism as a place . . . a material place, Solomon's Temple. . . . This is my intention. This is my will!"

Di Bernardo also let slip that Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith director Abe Foxman is a collaborator in the Temple Mount project. Di Bernardo revealed that, while Foxman lacks intellectual capital, Lord Northampton and he had met Foxman in Switzerland, just prior to the launching of the Jerusalem Lodge, to discuss their project, and have met with him on several other occasions. "There are strong relations between B'nai B'rith and Freemasonry," Di Bernardo explained."

In addition to the hordes of U.S. fundamentalists who are cheering for Israel to be annihilated so that Christ will return, Darbyism left a deep impact on Israel and its institutions, through the legendary British military intelligence figure Orde Wingate, who established the anti-Ben Gurion "terror against terror" tradition of Israel's military and intelligence forces.



Whereas, in the 1930s and 1940s, labor Zionists typified by David Ben Gurion wanted peaceful collaboration with the Arabs in Palestine, the British were playing their usual "divide and conquer" games. While the bulk of British military and intelligence circles in the Middle East were ostensibly "pro-Arab" (such as the famous Maj. Gen. John Glubb Pasha of Transjordan) the devout Darbyite, Col. Orde Wingate, was sent to Palestine to train Jewish leaders in terror tactics against the Arabs, a tradition which directly produced Ariel Sharon.

Wingate's father, Col. Charles Wingate, was a leader in the Plymouth Brethren, and headed a number of the sect's "missionary committees," particularly for Africa and Central Asia. He raised his children in the customary, abusive Darby fashion, as recounted even by Wingate's biographer Christopher Sykes, of the infamous Sykes-Picot Treaty of the 1920s, which divided the Middle East between Britain and France: "The extraordinary Puritanism of the household in which Orde Wingate grew up is easily condemned as calculated to deform and fetter its members." And deform it did. Aside from the pleasure he took in teaching Jews to kill and torture Arabs in Palestine in the 1930s, Sykes reported of Wingate, "Throughout his life he often embarrassed other people by wearing no clothes at unlikely moments, but never himself."

The ostensibly pro-Zionist Wingate was repeatedly suspected by early Zionist leaders of being a "British plant," as even Sykes had to admit: "He was so very much of a Zionist, so extremist even among extremists, even at this time, that many people, including some Jews, found his enthusiasm hard to account for." Many asked, Sykes noted, "Might this not be some well-planted spy, some more than ordinarily ingenious agent provocateur?" And, as Sykes further recorded the observations of one of Wingate's Jewish associates, "In those days no one was allowed to leave the settlement without the express permission of the commander, but Wingate used to disappear and reappear after a couple of hours. We had meanwhile searched for him in vain, whilst he had thoroughly explored the vicinity. The fact that Wingate moved so far away from our settlement and always returned safely, made many of our people sceptical as to his real intentions, and they suspected him of having some connection with the armed Arab gangs" (emphasis added).

Wingate was a "Zionist" because he served the Crown, as he explained in a letter to his cousin, Sir Reginald Wingate, a leading official of Britain's Colonial Office: "The Jews are loyal to the Empire.... Palestine is essential to our Empire—our Empire is essential to England—England is essential to world peace. We have the chance to plant here in Palestine and Transjordan a loyal, rich and intelligent nation, with which we can hold for us the key to world dominion without expense or effort on our part." And, while Wingate played the "pro-Zionist," two of his cousins were legendary "Arab handlers" for British Intelligence: The "anti-imperialist" Orientologist E.G. Browne, a sponsor of Al-Afghansi and the Muslim Brotherhood, and T.E. Lawrence "of Arabia."

The British military chief in Palestine in the 1930s, Sir Archibald Wavell, authorized Wingate to form the "Special Night Squads," who would torture and kill Arabs in violation of Ben Gurion's policy of "self-restraint." As even Wingate's admirer Sykes reported, "Many allegations were made against him, sometimes by shocked Jewish followers who came from the decency of civilian surroundings." Those terrorist units gave rise to the Irgun and the Stern Gang, and to a philosophical tradition among his trainees—like Sharon longtime sidekick "Dirty Rafi" Eytan, the former head of the infamous "Terror Against Terror" unit, who, according to EIR investigations, gave the initial impetus to Rabbi Kook's followers to found the Ateret Cohanim yeshiva.

Another Wingate pupil was Sharon's early patron, Gen. Avraham Yoffee. Yoffee trained under Wingate in 1936-39, and later helped sponsor Sharon's rise in the Israeli Defense Forces after the 1948 war. As head of Israel's three major commands, the Northern Command, Yoffee appointed Sharon as his chief of intelligence. Using Wingate's methods, Sharon founded and headed the infamous "101 Paratroop Unit," an elite group of 40-50 British SAS-type terrorists, which repeatedly stoked the terror-counterterror cycle between Arabs and Jews throughout the 1950s and to the present day. Particularly in the early days, the use of such terror tactics was bitterly debated within Israel, as being "anti-Jewish" as well as clearly counterproductive to peaceful coexistence with Israel's Arab neighbors.

The British ties to leading Israeli military and defense figures established through Wingate, were manifested in other ways as well, in addition to Sharon's training at the Military Staff College in Britain in the 1950s. Yoffee, who used to take Sharon for lengthy hunting trips in Africa, was an intimate of Sir Peter Scott, Prince Philip's closest collaborator (along with the old Nazi Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands) in founding the World Wildlife Fund. Reflecting these intimate WWF connections, Yoffee became the founding head of Israel's Nature Preserves Authority, while his protégé Sharon went on to become the chief "secular" protagonist in another British scheme, the plot to rebuild Solomon's Temple.

25-Year `Shotgun Marriage' of Israel's
Likud and U.S. Fundamentalists Exposed

The Jerusalem Report magazine, on Nov. 18, published a lengthy opinion column by Gershom Gorenberg, assailing those in Israel who are promoting an alliance with American "Christian fundamentalists," like Rev. Pat Robertson and Rev. Jerry Falwell. Gorenberg warned that "conservative evangelicals' 'love' for Israel is rooted in their theology.... It sees Jews as spiritually blind for rejecting Jesus. But it also regards Israel's existence as heralding the end of days—when Jews will die or at last convert and Jesus will return."




Gorenberg singled out Jerusalem's Jabotinskyite Mayor Ehud Olmert and Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein as two of the biggest promoters of the wedding of the Israeli radical right with the American Christian fundamentalists. Olmert has established a series of new organizations, many of which serve as pipelines of Christian Zionist cash into the Jerusalem Likud party apparatus. The One Jerusalem organization, the New Jerusalem Foundation, and the Jerusalem Prayer Team are but three of the outfits that Olmert has personally sponsored, since being elected as the Mayor of the city. Olmert's local Jerusalem booster in all these efforts is Rabbi Eckstein, who worked for decades for the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL), before establishing the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews in the 1980s.



The issue of this pipeline of dirty money into the radical right in Israel is a particularly pressing one now, with elections to the Knesset (parliament) scheduled for Jan. 28, 2003. In a recent discussion with an American journalist, Gorenberg confirmed that the so-called "philanthropies" provide a vehicle for illegal flows of foreign money into electoral campaigns. Donors to the charities are often "tapped" to provide additional funds to candidates for office. Gorenberg reported that, while the practice is illegal in Israel, it is as common as the sale of bootlegged booze in Chicago at the height of Prohibition. No "good guy" can be elected to office in Israel without dipping into the trough of foreign cash, he lamented.
Jerusalem Prayer Team, Keyes, and Moonies

In his Jerusalem Report piece, Gorenberg zeroed in on the Jerusalem Prayer Team, whose leading members include Robertson, Rev. Mike Evans, and Tim LaHaye, author of the bestselling "Left Behind" novels about life on Earth after the Rapture, in which the Jews are subject to a new Holocaust or convert to Christianity. According to Gorenberg, "Evans' book Jerusalem Betrayed asserts that an apocalypse is near, in which rivers of blood will flow in Israel—and urges readers to pray for that to happen."

In return for opening the doors of Jerusalem to this gang of heretics, Olmert has been lucratively rewarded. On Oct. 15, 2002, according to Gorenberg's account, Olmert appeared at a fundraising dinner for Jerusalem in San Diego, organized by the Mission Valley Christian Fellowship. Olmert walked away with $500,000 from the $1,000 a plate dinner. On the same U.S. tour, Olmert had first showed up in Washington for a Christian Coalition revival meeting at the Convention Center, which culminated with a "Christian Solidarity With Israel" rally, addressed by Olmert, Robertson, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), Rep. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) and former Ambassador Alan Keyes. Keyes' presence at the Robertson rally was of particular significance, given that he has been deeply involved, for years, in the Reverend Moon Unification Church apparatus, which, as EIR has recently exposed, is the leading dirty-money channel for the entire worldwide radical rightist network—including the Jabotinskyites in Israel.

Gorenberg concluded his essay with a warning: "I reached Zvi Raviv, director general of the New Jerusalem Foundation by phone in San Diego. He said he'd come back to town to heal the rift between the Jewish community and the church. Listening to him, I had to respect his dedication to Jerusalem's welfare. But when he said, 'As far as is known to me, Pat Robertson doesn't have a controversial connotation today,' I also had to conclude there's more he needs to know. And there's more that Ehud Olmert, or for that matter some American Jewish leaders, need to consider than the immediate payoff before they appear on the same stages or sign on the same ads as the Christian Right. This romance wasn't made in heaven."

Mossad Exposed in Phony
`Palestinian Al-Qaeda' Caper

The United States government has been provided with concrete evidence that the Israeli Mossad and other Israeli intelligence services have been involved in a 13-month effort to "recruit" an Israeli-run, phony "al-Qaeda cell" among Palestinians, so that Israel could achieve a frontline position in the U.S. war against terrorism and get a green light for a worldwide "revenge without borders" policy. The question: Does the United States have the moral fiber to investigate?

Evidence of the Israeli dirty tricks burst onto the public scene on Dec. 6, when Col. Rashid Abu Shbak, head of the Palestinian Preventive Security Services in the Gaza Strip, held a press conference revealing the details of the alleged plot, as his agency had put the pieces together. The revelations undermine the "big lie" that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has used to justify new brutal attacks on Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip and other occupied areas. Sharon claimed on Dec. 4 that Israeli intelligence had "hard evidence" of al-Qaeda operations in the Gaza Strip. Now, the top Palestinian leadership has shown the United States and other nations how Israeli intelligence entities were creating that al-Qaeda link!

American leader Lyndon LaRouche, a Democratic Presidential pre-candidate in 2004, commented that these revelations, if confirmed, could be "of strategic importance" in stopping the American, British, and Israeli warhawks pushing for a Middle East war, beginning with an invasion of Iraq. A war would justify the Sharon government's plan to annihilate the very idea of a Palestinian state. LaRouche warned that if institutions of the American Presidency and the international community successfully block an American pre-emptive war on Iraq, the biggest danger would be that a "mega-terror" attack, blamed on Palestinians, or an "Iraqi-linked" al-Qaeda, would be staged by Israel's ruling Jabotinskyite fanatics, to put the war back on the agenda.

News about the Mossad-run attempt to create an al-Qaeda cell came when well-informed intelligence sources based in Washington had already told EIR that there are many doubts about the Mossad's hasty declaration that "al-Qaeda" had been responsible for the Nov. 28 attack on a hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, where three Israelis were killed, and the failed rocket attack on an Israeli chartered jet that was departing from Mombasa airport. There was no identification of the bombers within the first five days of the incident, the sources pointed out, yet Sharon's government ministers went on an immediate propaganda rampage announcing worldwide revenge (see article in this section). Authorities in Kenya also denied the al-Qaeda link. But the usefulness of blaming al-Qaeda, for the Israeli right, was palpable, when Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Kenya attacks "a golden opportunity" to prove to the United States that Bush's war on terrorism, and Israel's war with the Palestinians is the same thing. Netanyahu's faction has violently rejected the Palestinian Authority's revelations, and so far, the American and European press have followed suit, despite the dramatic nature of these charges, and the documents that the Palestinians have provided to the international press.
Chronology of the Revelations

On Dec. 7, the British news service, Reuters, the Israeli daily Ha'aretz, and Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV network, all reported that the Palestinian Authority had accused the Mossad of creating a phony al-Qaeda cell in the Gaza Strip. Ha'aretz reported, "the head of Palestinian Preventive Security" in the Gaza Strip, Col. Rashid Abu Shbak, said on Dec. 6, "that his forces had identified a number of Palestinian collaborators who had been ordered by Israeli security agencies to 'work in the Gaza Strip under the name of al-Qaeda.' He said the investigation was ongoing and evidence would be presented soon." Al-Jazeera TV added that the Palestinian authorities had arrested a group of Palestinian "collaborators with Israeli occupation" in Gaza, involved in the operation.

Reuters' reporter Diala Saadeh, under the headline, "Palestinians: Israel Faked Gaza al-Qaeda Presence," quoted a number of Palestinian Authority (P.A.) senior officials, including President Yasser Arafat, who told reporters at his West Bank Ramallah headquarters, that Sharon's claims of al-Qaeda operations in Palestinian territories "is a big, big, big lie to cover [Sharon's] attacks and his crimes against our people everywhere." P.A. Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo detailed the case: "There are certain elements who were instructed by the Mossad to form a cell under the name of al-Qaeda in the Gaza Strip in order to justify the assault and the military campaigns of the Israeli occupation army against Gaza."

Palestinian officials promised to provide detailed evidence, and did so on Dec. 8, in a press conference addressed by Colonel Shbak, and by Palestinian Minister for Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Shaath. Shbak told the international representatives that, "Over the past nine months, we've been investigating eight cases in which Israeli intelligence posing as al-Qaeda operatives recruited Palestinians in the Gaza Strip." Colonel Shbak said that 3 men were under arrest, and 11 had been released. He explained that those released had voluntarily provided information going back to May 2002, about the contacts that had been made asking them to operate as an "al-Qaeda" group. The alleged al-Qaeda recruiters were traced to Israeli intelligence, said Colonel Shbak. He detailed incidents, some of which were described in official documents, of cell phone calls and e-mails, where Palestinians were asked to "join al-Qaeda." Shbak said, "We investigated the origin of those calls, which used [wireless phone] roaming, and messages, and found out they all came from Israel," reported the publication, IslamOnline. He said that the potential "recruits," had been given money and weapons, "although most of these weapons did not even work." He also noted that the money for these targetted Palestinians "was transferred from bank accounts in Jerusalem or Israel."

Minister Shaath announced at the press conference that the P.A. had "handed ambassadors and consuls of the Arab and foreign countries, documents revealing the involvement of the Israeli intelligence in recruiting citizens from Gaza Strip in a fake organization carrying the name of Qaeda." He said the ploy was intended "to create a new excuse to escalate the aggression on Gaza Strip."

The international community was jolted again on Dec. 10, when Colonel Shbak held another press conference and the Preventive Security Agency presented the Mossad's potential recruiter himself to the international media. According to reports in the Arabic press in Dubai, London and Ramallah, the man appeared in disguise (for security reasons,) and was identified only as "Ibrahim," but explained in great detail that he was one of the "key recruiters" for the potential cell. He said the story started in October 2001, when, after he sent his photo and mobile phone number to a "contact page" in a Jerusalem magazine, he was contacted by a person calling himself "Youssef," and nicknamed "Abu Othman." After building up a personal relationship with "Ibrahim," and telling him how much he resembled his own son, who had been killed, Youssef sent him $2,000, and began encouraging the Gaza man—who appeared to be in his early 20s—to become a more observant and practicing Muslim.

In May 2002, five months after the initial contact, said Ibrahim, Youssef "told me frankly, 'you are a good candidate to work for us in the company of Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda group.' " This Youssef also claimed to have already created an al-Qaeda cell inside Israel. Ibrahim said that he then approached the Palestinian security services and told them about the transactions with Youssef, and that the security services asked him to continue the communications, which they would monitor. He said that the specific instructions were that Ibrahim was to announce through a communiqué—directly from Gaza—that al-Qaeda claimed credit for a bombing attack, or attacks, that Youssef indicated his network was about to carry out in Israel. Ibrahim stressed that the man also said that he (the Mossad officer) "had the capability to carry out major bombing operations inside Israel, but that the al-Qaeda group in Gaza should claim responsibility for the attack and no other group." In an interview with the London-based Arabic daily Al-Hayat, after the press conference, Ibrahim stated, that "the man told him that mega military operations will be conducted inside Israel, and that these operations would be announced through Ibrahim." This would mean that as soon as he gets the signal after a major terrorist act against Israeli civilian targets, Ibrahim and his group would send a communiqué to the press or a videotape, similar to the ones sent by bin Laden to Al-Jazeera, claiming responsibility for the attack.

Ibrahim was also asked to gather specific information for Youssef about a number of persons in Gaza, some of them known to be members of Hamas. When asked why he wanted this information, Youssef said, "I want them to join al-Qaeda." At that point, Palestinian security services cut off the "Ibrahim-Youssef" contact, because it was becoming too dangerous.

At the same press conference, Colonel Shbak said direct money payments "transferred from Israel," had been received by five out of the eight Palestinians who have been giving information to the Preventive Security Agency about this operation. Shbak also explained that his agency traced and obtained a number of telephone numbers, registrations, and bank receipts for money transferred to some of those persons.

Now, said Shbak, the United States and a number of international intelligence and security organs had been supplied with documents and evidence refuting the Israeli allegations about Palestinian connections to al-Qaeda. "These documents prove without any doubt that the ones who are behind this alleged al-Qaeda group are the various Israeli intelligence organizations," Shbak added. He told Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah daily that the "Americans have not responded yet to the documents ... as provided by the Palestinian Preventive Security agency."
The 9/11 Cover Story

The question is whether the U.S. government and other governments will take up the evidence given to them. It is well established that several top Cabinet officials in the current Sharon caretaker government, including Sharon himself, have a long, jaded history of staging precisely these kinds of "countergang" operations, using Israeli covert operatives and Arabs tortured and brainwashed in Israeli jails and recruited as false-flag terrorists. Sharon, Mossad chief Moshe Dagan, and Gen. Effie Eitam are proponents of such dirty-war tactics. As EIR reported in several extensive articles on the Hamas organization, that terrorist capability was actually created by Ariel Sharon and the Israeli right wing, for the purpose of supplanting Yasser Arafat and the organizations of the Palestine Liberation Organization (see EIR, Dec. 6).

Even more to the point, the Osama bin Laden authorship of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has been a cover story from the first moments the media began reporting it as fact. Interviewed on the morning of Sept. 11 as the attacks were unfolding, LaRouche made clear that the breadth and sophistication of these attacks showed that it was "an inside job," involving U.S. military and intelligence operatives capable of defeating or neutralizing all existing and backup security systems. Bin Laden was named as the culprit, explains LaRouche, because his name provided entry into the policy of a Clash of Civilizations against Islam, which right-wing neo-conservatives in the Bush Administration have as their goal. LaRouche has also pointedly asked when Osama bin Laden stopped being an American agent—a reality that the "Islamic card" networks of Zbigniew Brzezinski and the Iran-Contra financiers of the Afghansi mujahideen, want to bury. It must also be asked, when did al-Qaeda stop working for British intelligence? EIR has documented that British foreign intelligence, MI6, worked closely with so-called Islamist terrorist groups safe-housed in Britain, to destabilize Arab and Muslim nations, in the geopolitical service of Her Majesty's government, and an Anglo-American imperial faction.

As recently as November, this coverup of British/U.S. covert support for terrorism continued, with the case of David Shayler, a former MI5 agent who was sentenced to six months in jail for disclosing "government secret information." Shayler told London Guardian reporter Martin Bright that MI6 hired one of Osama bin Laden's closest collaborators—Anas al-Liby, who remains on the U.S. government's Most Wanted List, with a reward of $25 million for his capture—to assassinate Libya's Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi in 1996. Bright, who could not publish the article in the Guardian, but did so in the Pakistani daily, The Dawn, on Oct. 30, received a gag order from the British Attorney General, threatening him with prison, if he publishes any more information from Shayler.

With this background in mind, the public revelations about the Mossad attempts to set up al-Qaeda cells, could have strategic consequences for the discredited Sharon government—and even more broadly for the Clash of Civilizations zealots covering up the truth about Sept. 11. The Palestinian revelations could become the "straw that broke the camel's back," in this dirty war.

With all the recent dramas, consider this.

All this North Korea drama was foreseen.





"Cheney, LaRouche observed, is desperate, and becoming increasingly useless. Therefore, the people who use Cheney are also desperate, and are accelerating crises around the globe, from Southwest Asia to the Korean peninsula.

One senior American military historian pointed to the escalated rhetoric of Cheney and Rumsfeld recently against North Korea as one indicator that the Cheney crowd might be contemplating simultaneous provocations against North Korea and Iran. The historian pointed to the parallels to 1956, when Britain, France, and Israel invaded and seized the Suez Canal, at the same moment that the Hungarian Revolution erupted against the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe.

The Israeli source also noted that Cheney is well aware that if the United States launches a pre-emptive attack on North Korea, using mini-nuclear weapons, the international outcry will be so great that no near-term opportunity will exist to take on Iran. So, an American attack on North Korea, coinciding with an Israeli limited strike on Iran cannot, the two sources insisted, be ruled out. They both concurred with LaRouche's assessment of Cheney's desperation."


`X Committee' Out To
Blow Up Southwest Asia

The 'X Committee' Factor

Both Cheney and Blair, LaRouche pointed out, are surrounded by the "X Committee," the Anglo-American neo-con apparatus that has been playing the Israeli "breakaway ally" game for decades. It is the X Committee that is out to blow up the Persian Gulf "oil patch" and the surrounding area.

The term "X Committee" refers to senior Reagan-era Pentagon officials suspected of deploying Israeli spy Jonathan Jay Pollard, but never caught. Among those still playing pivotal roles today in Washington are Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, Paul Wolfowitz, Frank Gaffney, and Douglas Feith.

A number of these X Committee figures wrote the July 1996 report titled "A Clean Break" for incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spelling out a regional war scheme to knock out the governments of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. It is that plan, passed from the X Committee gang in Washington into Israel, that is still playing out today, and is behind the "Israeli" provocations against Syria and Iran.

One possible pathway to halting these "silent preparations for war" will be open soon in the Federal Courthouse in Alexandria, Va. On June 13, former Pentagon Iran analyst Lawrence Franklin will appear in court for the unsealing of grand jury indictments, which are expected also to name two "former" AIPAC (American Israel Political Affairs Committee) senior employees, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman. The three, possibly along with several Israelis, are expected to be charged with espionage-related crimes, involving the passing of classified information to an Israeli embassy official, Naor Gilon, whom former U.S. intelligence officials have identified as the Mossad station chief in Washington.

Larry Franklin was the Iran desk officer at the Pentagon's Near East South Asia policy unit headed by William Luti, now a White House Special Assistant to the President. Luti came out of Cheney's VP office and was part of an X Committee cell at the Pentagon that reported directly to Cheney chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, according to eyewitness accounts. Other members of the cell, who apparently used Franklin as their patsy, included outgoing Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Doug Feith, one of the co-authors of "A Clean Break."

Israeli Warsaw Ghetto Methods:
U.S., Europe Are Accountable

Repeated public warnings by U.S. Presidential pre-candidate Lyndon LaRouche against "the insane fascism of Ariel Sharon," were terribly confirmed by an Israeli officer's report to the daily Ha'aretz on Jan. 25: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been studying the 1943 military tactics of the Nazi SS against the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto, for application against the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza today.

LaRouche, in response, emphasized that the revealed intention of the IDF and Israeli Prime Minister Sharon, to adopt specifically Nazi methods of war against a resisting population, must be brought to the doorstep of the European governments and especially the U.S. Bush Administration. The White House has increasingly given a green light to Sharon's campaign to assassinate and eliminate the Palestinian leadership in past weeks. LaRouche will throw his authority on this matter—established by his precise warnings since Sharon first made his move for power in September 2000—into the drive to hold the U.S. and European governments accountable for the consequences. "The United States has the leverage to stop this," LaRouche said.
No Denying Reality

They thought that it was similar, because you would be fighting street-by-street against the Palestinian Authority."

"The real problem," Gissen claimed, in answer to a second question, "is those who refuse to serve." A movement has begun among Israeli reservists, resisting the IDF's strategy. "They may have to face a court-martial. They will have to face the consequences, if they do not serve when they are called up; that is the real problem."

The European Union, on Jan. 28, did issue a statement including the demand that "the Israeli government must withdraw its military forces and stop its extrajudicial executions, lift the closures and all restrictions imposed on the Palestinian people and its leadership, and freeze [Israeli] settlements [in the Occupied Territories]." The EU also protested Israel's deliberate "destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and other facilities which help Palestinians in their economic, social, and humanitarian development"—such destruction was a hallmark of the Nazi SS liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto and other populations.

But this is a pale reflection of the action the United States must take—similar to President Dwight Eisenhower's strong moves in 1956 which forced Israel to withdraw from its invasion of Egypt (see article in this section). That strong pressure will have to be backed up with serious financing for an economic development strategy for peace in the region.
'Jewish Resistance' in Israel

Within Israel, a backlash against "becoming fascists" had already begun to rise before Jan. 25—even after the Sharon government's success over the past year in making the Israeli public increasingly hysterical against the Palestinian leadership and the Oslo peace process. Close to 100 Israeli military reservists (as of Jan. 30) have signed a public statement declaring, "We will no longer fight beyond the Green Line for the purpose of occupying, deporting, destroying, blockading, killing, starving, and humiliating an entire people." The reservists want to get 500 behind the statement and launch a broad social campaign.

Israeli Knesset (parliament) member Roman Bronfman has formed a new Democratic Choice party in an effort "that will prevent Israel from deteriorating into a state of ordinary fascism," he told Ha'aretz on Jan. 28. Bronfman wants to push Labor Party leaders, such as Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg, Labor Party leader Yossi Beilin, and Deputy Defense Minister Dalia Rabin Pelossof, to pull the Labor Party out of Sharon's national unity government. All three have themselves made dramatic statements about the consequences of Sharon's policies.

Well-known Israeli journalist Gideon Levy issued an open letter to Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, a Labor Party leader, demanding that he leave the government and pull down Sharon's coalition. It has been reported that in cabinet meetings during January, Peres warned other cabinet members that Israel was committing acts for which they might wind up being prosecuted as war criminals. "A government," says Levy's letter, "that deliberately sabotages every Palestinian effort to achieve quiet, that utterly humiliates their leaders, for whom vengeance is the sole motivating force ... can no longer be forgiven."

LaRouche, since June 2001, has repeatedly reminded Israelis that they cannot win a war fought on fascist principles, in the midst of a global economic collapse which is wrecking Israel's economy as well. The kind of continually spreading religious war which is the fruit of such actual war crimes, will in time destroy Israel itself, LaRouche has warned.

More Israeli civilians and soldiers have been killed since Sharon took power in January 2001 than in the entire preceding six years of the Oslo peace process which he denounces. Car-bombing and suicide-bombing civilian casualties now occur almost daily. The Warsaw Ghetto Model

The horror of the IDF studying use of those military methods, by which the Israelis' ancestors were annihilated in Warsaw, sinks in deeper when one looks at the source they must have consulted. Nazi Major General of Police Jürgen Stroop, who commanded that annihilation, recorded and left behind a detailed, day-by-day, almost hour-by-hour account of his strategy and actions during those terrible 28 days in April-May 1943.

In The Stroop Report: "The Warsaw Ghetto Is No More!" the psychotic Nazi general describes how his troops liquidated or deported a population of more than 60,000 remaining Warsaw Jews who were conducting an increasing armed resistance; 300,000 other Jews had already been deported to concentration camps from Warsaw. Many among the remaining 60,000 worked in, or managed, arms factories in the Ghetto, which were supplying the German army. Thus they could arm themselves; and for the same reason, the German regular army resisted orders from Berlin to deport them.

Heinrich Himmler sent Stroop to Warsaw to solve this "problem" with SS and Nazi police forces. In all his pronouncements and orders, Stroop referred to all Jews as "the armed enemy bandits and terrorists," and portrayed his units as being in heroic and dangerous warfare against this armed enemy.

Stroop progressively walled and fenced iff the Ghetto, and began a strategy of destroying it, residential block by block. The Nazi troops burned and/or blew up apartment buildings and shops; as Jews were forced out of them, resistance fighters were assassinated and the rest immediately deported to camps. Resistance from a building, was sufficient to have the entire block destroyed and burned, cellars pumped full of poison gas. Electrical and other infrastructure was systematically destroyed by Stroop's forces; sewers where Jews were hiding were walled and flooded or filled with gas. Stroop saved for last, the ceremonial dynamiting of the Warsaw main synagogue on May 16, 1943: his signal that all the remaining Jews had been killed or "removed."

The same methods were used again in 1944 against non-Jewish Polish resistance fighters in Warsaw.
Nuremberg War Crimes Evidence

This all chillingly brings to mind the 100 Israeli reservists' declaration, quoted above, of what they refuse to take part in any longer. It throws light on the strategy of walling off the Palestinian area and expelling all Palestinians from Israeli areas, put forward by Sharon backer Samuel Bronfman, and reportedly now under discussion by security officials of Sharon's government.

If it is the Warsaw Ghetto "war" the IDF is studying, The Stroop Report is that source. The crazed Nazi general had his report bound in leather, illustrated, and presented formally to Himmler as a gift. It was later "presented" in a different sense, to U.S. Nuremberg Tribunal prosecutor Robert Jackson, who first made it public. At Nuremberg in 1946 this report—now apparently a tactical tool somewhere within the Israeli Defense Forces—was introduced as prime evidence of the worst war crimes.

Stroop was captured in 1945 by the Soviet Red Army, underwent a personality disintegration during his brief imprisonment, was tried for war crimes, and executed.

The entire Stroop Report was republished in book form in 1998—as a warning to today's nations—by the Holocaust History Project, and has been translated into English in full on its website since 1999. On Lyndon LaRouche's authority, this warning has now become a crucial matter of national morality, and war and peace.
