This would be what we have since termed 'ritual' or 'sacrifice', usually it seems to involve spilled blood, but also pain and sexual intercourse. Symbols too. Why? Well.... It would appear that a pentagram is really a 2d depiction of a 4d shape! A 4d tetrahedron, specifically (the most basic 4d shape). And a hexagram is a 2d depiction of a 4d... Cube! So somehow these 2d depictions of 4d shapes act as homing beacons, or markers on a map, for these entities.
