So funny. It's like two extremes, either you feed your child with big macs and other junk food or you feed them only vegetables. I have grown up on meat, dairy and vegetables. All humans have always eaten meat and dairy and have lived life very well. Now, some vegan nutjobs come in and say that you can be healthy only by eating vegetables... What? And that, it's better than to eat junk food. A regular person, who can handle junk food, meat and vegetables is better off than a person who eats only vegetables.

This debate is ridiculous. Healthy person is the one who eats all products in balanced portions.

With the meat prices going through the roof...soon to be unaffordable, you may want to explore alternate sources of protein, iron, etc. The vegans have a leg up. Just sayin.

Forcing vegan on kids is extreme? Forcing non-vegan on them is extreme. Actually we don't force anything on our kids, we introduce them to things. For instance, we introduce our kids to ice cream, chocoale milk or soda pop as kids (ie; gmo's, sugars and cancer causing sugar substitutes, various deadly chemicals etc.). Isn't that actual child abuse? Our kids are (and rightly so) an extension of us, our beliefs get passed on to them. To call that extreme is well.....extreme. Everybody believes that their "educated" opinion is THE opinion and the world should modify itself accordingly. Veganism is good and healthy, vegetarianism is good and healthy. The regular everyday eating regimen offered by the mainstream is enriching to the ama etc however is deadly to the average American and truly abusive.

Who's surprised? They tell us all the time that our kids are not ours.

The M.D. diagnosed the baby as being in distress. He was obligated and mandated to report the mother—which he should have done. It very well might be the action that saved the infant’s life.

All of this vegan, holisitc crap has gotten completely out of control.

not only that, but a lot of the gmo soy and corn products are fed to the meat people eat. If you haven't looked at labels on vegan food, you really shouldn't be talking about the gmo aspect of things. Most vegan prepped food is organic, etc.

I'm not sure I understand the militant side to healthcare this woman is now going to be dealing with. The baby was only 12 days old. This was the best option they could come up with?

Did you know that most vegans are actually against what this mother did? They actually think the woman should have done what the doctor said to help her baby.

No. Because you are caught up in your myths about what someone else thinks without even bothering to ask them.

(there's no way it could possibly be because of some other failure to thrive issue unrelated to veganism...I had a friend whose child had an issue like this but she wasn't vegan, nor was her child. So when failure to thrive happens because statistically, it will, anyone that happens to be a vegan parent feeding a vegan infant is going to get completely fuckin screwed!).

The tail end of this is that the baby was "dehydrated" and none of the articles say "malnourished"....did anyone pick up on that? That means she was probably using too much formula and too little water, or just not feeding the baby enough.

1) the doc might've had an issue against anyone being vegan, particularly an infant, and done this in jest just because he can.

3) it makes all vegans look pretty bad when there's really nothing striking about this article (and other articles) other than the use of the word vegan.

4) no pictures of the baby, imo, no proof. This woman is the only one to be seen and she's not "skinny" by any means...

This is true. The baby should be breastfed if she is that into health. And she better be giving that baby supplements with b12 in it or the child's health will be ruined.

If she isn't nursing the child(and there isn't any medical reason why she can't) then she doesn't care about the child.

While I think a vegan diet is about the most unhealthy diet morans have yet to come up with, and is actually extremely detrimental to a growing child, I support this mother's right to control the diet, health care decisions, discipline, and education of her child...

It's a simple question of ideology...

Yeah if she won't use formula (which I think is bad as well), then she damn well better be breast feeding or she is in fact malnourishing her child, and that would be grounds for the State to step in...

Of course as a side note, even if she IS breast feeding, as a vegan her body might not be able to produce enough milk for her child, so there's that as well.

You have control. Just don't go to doctors and have the baby/s at home. Claim you didn't know you were pregnant. Many do. Monitor you own blood pressure, protein levels, sugar levels etc on your own. Tons of info on the net. If there are any problems you do have the choice to go the medical route. Anyway, there are ways to go about things if you really want to do things your own way.

When they eat soy it is fermented.

It is fermented soy and they do not eat a lot of it.

Wow, the projection here is incredible! Nowhere in the article does it say anything about breastfeeding or that the baby was 12 days old! Where did you get that?

Also it says that she didn't think the baby was dehydrated because the baby was having regular bowel movements.

The lack of said movements is a sign of dehydration.

Hey asswipe, I was raised vegatarian, switched to vegan - never broke a bone, never in a hospital, never on a single medication except for an antibiotic as a precaution for a spider bite (and had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic). Over 50 can work outside farming/gardening from sun up till sundown - and if I get a cut or scrape - its healed the next day.

Learn about nutrition and what food is before you make such a stupid remark again.
