Fuku: Cooling stopped at reactor #5 sfp July6
Direct trans from Asahi:

TEPCO the 6th, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Unit 5 spent fuel has announced that it has stopped the cooling of the pools that store. Cooling water because the water leak is found from the pipe to capture the cool sea water.

10 at around 11 am on the 6th, the reactor building of TEPCO employees patrolling water from leaking from a pipe in the found. Had leaked that auxiliary cooling seawater system, it was piping system to capture the seawater to cool the turbines and pumps. Of water leaking radioactive material concentration of low, TEPCO is expected to seawater. There was no leak in the patrol at the time of the morning the day before.

May also be affecting other pools, trying to get more info. Trans is hard to sort out.

Fuku: Reactor 5 spent fuel pool cooling stopped due 2water leak found on plumbing (July 6,11:10am). The pool stores 946 + 48 spent/unused

JDGonbay 3m
@RadChick4Cast The pipe is a part of entire cooling system which somehow also cooling spent fuel pool (weird)

This guy is in Japan, American and speaks Japanese:

JDGonbay 31s
@RadChick4Cast The leak was found on Sea-water intake plumbing - seawater is used to cool the turbine, pump (they don't say which turbine)

JDGonbay 53s
@RadChick4Cast sorry - the article is a lil confusing.
It is affecting cooling system of spent fuel pool located within reactor 5 building.

So looks like it's just #5 that is affected.

Pool #5 has 946 assemblies, 48 new fuel.

5 and 6 are already gone! I still remember that back in march 2011 they had to punch holes in the roofs of those 2 reactors. Why would they do that if there were no problems?

they are cooling unit 5 with sea water???
Is that not corrosive and dangerous long-term?

I was on the fence until the Japanese government officially announced that 300 tons of radioactive water was going out to sea everyday.

That news along with the rest of the Fukushima news will destroy Japan's tourist and fishing industries and that's just for starters.

There's no way that a country with one of the largest economies in the world yet probably one of the most fragile economies at the same time could go to this length for a hoax.

There's no chance on that level. But, then you have to deal with all the circumstantial evidence.

And furthermore you have to deal with the fact that the media is ignoring Fukushima with very few exceptions. What's the point of pulling off an elaborate, expensive hoax like this if you're not going to make use of it in the media?

Nothing whatsoever points to this being a hoax. I've ruled that out as a possibility.

This is very insulting to Radchick who started this thread and is considered by people in her field to be very knowledgeable about radiation. It's one of the most idiotic posts I've seen on GLP and that really says something.

SNIP

But the more pressing part of this typhoon is its impact across the Japanese Islands. Forecasts are closely tracking the center to just west of Okinawa by Tuesday morning. This scenario will place the strongest winds of Neoguri across the islands. We are expecting winds of up to 185kph along with heavy rains of up to 400mm and high waves that could reach 5 meters or more.

After the Ryukyu Islands, Neoguri is expected to head northeastward towards Mainland Japan. It could make landfall in Kyushu by Thursday morning and will bring strong winds and heavy rains across the region.

Please prepare now if you reside in Okinawa or one of the nearby islands. Stock up on food, water, medicine, and bring loose objects inside. Once the winds start howling, please stay indoors and do not try to venture outside. As always, follow the instructions and warnings from your local officials!

Why can't they treat the released sea water coolants with reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis has been identified by EPA as a “best available technology” (BAT) and Small System Compliance Technology (SSCT) for uranium, radium, gross alpha, and beta particles and photon emitters. It can remove up to 99 percent of these radionuclides, as well as many other contaminants (e.g., arsenic, nitrate, and microbial contaminants). Reverse osmosis units can be automated and compact making them appropriate for small systems.

Anyone remember the days when a thread like this would be pages long, filled with great commentary, within a couple of hours?

I don't know if it's doom overload or if the knowledgeable posters just realize that posting about this is pointless, we're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic (metaphorically speaking).

Citizenperth, nor RadChick is on right now. They are probably trying to get to the bottom of this as we speak...not to mention Kevin Blanch.

We will know more soon, but if Unit 5 is not being cooled it will melt down.

I am sure everyone understands that...pretty plain.
