Re: Fuku: Cooling stopped at reactor #5 sfp July6
Published yesterday by Fuku Diary, ANOTHER leak (or several) but this at the common sfp (the big one):

Contaminated groundwater has started breaking into common pool, to where Tepco is transferring the fuel assemblies from Reactor4 pool.

From Tepco’s announcement of 7/3/2014, they found groundwater was leaking into the basement floor of common pool building from 3 points of through-hole for piping.

They state the water is drained from the floor funnel to contaminated water circulating system.

The water is reported to be just groundwater, however it is contaminated.

Cesium-134 density : 21,000 Bq/m3

Cesium-137 density : 60,000 Bq/m3

All β nuclide density : 170,000 Bq/m3

It is not clear why the contaminated groundwater suddenly started breaking into the common pool.

(end snip)

Hmmm, wonder how this ties in with what is happening at #5?

yeah, they're "surprised", and "befuddled"

Re: Fuku: Cooling stopped at reactor #5 sfp July6

The original alert came from John Doe in Japan, an American in Tokyo who has been updating this from day 1.

We have had cooling interruptions periodically and will continue to have them because of the bombardment from neutron beams and gamma...the affect on metals causes accelerated fatigue through crystalization of the metal matrix. Wigner effect. Corrosion. Previous damage from the eq/explosions, etc etc.

In the past TEPCO has always been able to get it back online, once with sfp4 just in the nick of time. The problem with 'leaks' is the water is radioactive and makes it hard for workers to get close and fix what they nned to. From CP's post it looks like enough water leaked to be somewhat measurable...

The rods need constant cooling though so every day the temp is going to rise in the pool. If it gets to the point of boiling, then we have big problems.

They will likely bring in spray pumps or garden hoses to refill the pool before that happens. But this is far less effective than having direct cooling that works properly.

Yes, it seem strange that mainstream media has not touched this.

I was doing some research and found out that our Nuclear Regulatory Commission is in bed with TEPCO.

Bill Magwood, an Obama appointee to the NRC, used to be a consultant for Tepco.

Our past nuclear commissioner, Janczko, wanted to go after Tepco, and he was overthrown by a coup at the NRC.

Basically, the reason Fukushima has gone so unreported in America...at least to me...it is apparent the NRC is in bed with Tepco.

This is my opinion.

SNIP

Fukushima nuclear plant operator TEPCO reports that the coolant system of the fifth reactor was shut down due to a water leak. The system was halted after a leak near one of the valves was detected, according to the company’s press release.
The cooling system uses seawater that is being first pumped into the decontamination system and is then being fed to the reactors and the spent fuel pools. According to TEPCO, the temperature of the coolant liquid in the spent fuel pools is currently 23 degrees Celsius and no changes in the level of radioactive contamination has been reported yet

The real shit-kicker may be this: Typhoon incoming, and it's a strong one. It will weaken from a possible 5 to a 2 or 3 before it gets to Fuku, at least thats what Weather Underground is reporting - but that is still pretty strong...just updated on Jeff Master's blog:

In the Western Pacific, Typhoon Neoguri has strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds this Sunday morning, and is headed west-northwest at 12 mph towards a Tuesday brush with Okinawa in Japan's Ryukyu island chain. Satellite images show a huge and well-organized system, with a prominent eye, and very intense eyewall thunderstorms with cold cloud tops. WInd shear is light, 5 - 10 knots, sea surface temperatures are a very warm 30 - 31°C, and very warm waters extend to great depth along the storm's path, giving the typhoon plenty of heat energy to power potential intensification into a Category 5 Super Typhoon...Although ocean temperatures will cool and wind shear will rise as Neoguri approaches Japan, weakening the storm, the typhoon is so large and powerful that it will likely make landfall at Category 2 or 3 strength, causing major damage in Japan.

Now on RT:

At the time when the cooling system was switched off at around 12pm on Sunday, the temperature in the pool in which the rods are submerged was 23C but started increasing by 0.193 degrees per hour, TEPCO says.

If no new cold water is pumped in at such rate it will reach the dangerous threshold of 65C by the midpoint of the month in roughly 9 days.

Such temperatures, which have not been routinely seen at the plant since the failing of the cooling system in the immediate aftermath, would increase the possibility of dangerous reactions and further radiation leaks in the plant.

Yes it goes up exponentially, I remember seeing the original math in the early days at physics.orgs massive thread. Too tired to look for it now. But I bet 9 days is being generous on the side of TEPCO. Typhoons always seem to have a way of springing a few new leaks there, too.

I'm sure they are pulling out the duct tape and pink shower curtains there as we speak. <<Sigh>>

Re: Fuku: Cooling stopped at reactor #5 sfp July6
Since TEPCO is using seawater for many of its cooling needs at the power plant, it has previously encountered heightened levels of corrosion, in sensitive equipment. The cooling system at various reactors has also been beset by calamities – from rats short circuiting the control panel and forcing a blackout, to an employee “accidentally” switching it off, though all were resolved before rod pools overheated.

At the same time, TEPCO is struggling to deal with ever-increasing volumes of contaminated water which is being stored in hundreds of tanks at the facility and frequently leaking and contaminating the soil beneath it. And the much publicized plan to stop contaminated water from leaking into the sea by building an ‘ice-wall’ and freezing soil and water around the facility is not working as well as Japanese officials had hoped.

^^ Yeah it was a total failure, because it WON'T FREEZE.
