Our area has little to no money for social programs, childhood dental care, after school projects, clean water....but there is always money for the massively overcrowded jails: [ link to www.wect.com] The sheriff in Pender County plans to ask county commissioners Monday night for nearly $600,000.
Sheriff Carson Smith says the jail is overcrowded and he needs the money for inmate safekeeping and housing of inmates in other jails.
