Trouble finding a home phone landline service... Any suggestions?
We recently decided to finally get internet service (the last time I had it, I was a kid and had dial up) and decided to go ahead and get home phone service as well. I'm a stay at home mom with 2 kids and one on the way so a reliable phone is a must- I don't have a vehicle or any connections in a new town/state.... We went to ATT because they provided the cheapest price for the two services VS the local company Cox. They screwed up our order and gave us wireless home phone instead (i didnt even know that existed) so we had to bring it back, cancel that crap and had them get us real landline home phone. Which of course then they had to change our entire internet order as well because the first wasnt compatible with landline service. A few days later we got 2 boxes in the mail, which both had internet setup instructions... They sent us the (what i believe is) bad internet order parts and the updated current internet parts. We went to ATT and tried returning the wrong box, they said that we were supposed to get both boxes and sent us on our way. Today we got a bill in the mail for wireless home service for $50. So i called the number on th bill and got NO help. He said i have to call U Verse on Monday. Ive never even heard of U Verse?! Our service doesnt even get connected until the 14th, i am really fed up with ATT and our service hasnt even started yet.
So i am trying to find someone else but apparently Bellsouth got bought out by ATT and i have no idea who offers home phone landline service anymore? Google searches DONT help and Oklahoma no longer prints phonebooks from what I heard on the news a few months back. Can someone please help?
Im in central Oklahoma. Thank you in advance

Wow. I didn't even realize they still had landline service. This must be a pretty rural area without cell coverage?

Thanks for the Walmart suggestion as well as the police suggestion...

We live in a very populated area with ample cell service. I just dont feel comfortable having ONLY a cell service to rely on when my husband works in the next city over and none of my neighbors speak english and I have no vehicle while he works, with a 3 year old and 1 year old and being 6 mo pregnant.

Unfortunately Walmart only offers wireless home phone... Essentially a cell phone service dressed up to look like a cell phone. Bummer. Taking other suggestions or companies if anyone has em :)

.... Get your head out of your ass and realize you're equally just as screwed with a standard landline in case of a MAJOR emergency (power outage probably more than 3 days, longer than the backup battery inside the wireless home phone can last) as you are wireless.

Seeing as you're in Oklahoma, you're main natural disaster concern should be tornados correct? Wouldn't high winds tear up those telephone lines rendering them useless IF you happen to be struck by a tornado??

I'm sure you'd be more worried about plucking your three brats out the rubble than whether or not your telephone works...

Google dial up providers for your area even though you may not want that for Internet. They are the only way to get a true landline now.

The ridiculous thing is the smaller provider will be using ATT lines. You just have to have a middleman to get a real landline now. Nobody is going to admit that. They will tell you what you want to hear and keep sending you the wrong thing.

They are all NSA compliant. Land line, cell phone, doesn't matter. Good luck!

When I said wireless home phone, I meant they give you a cell phone service which uses cell towers and a phone that only resembles a house phone... Exactly what I'm attempting to avoid. I HAVE a wired home phone... Just looking for a service provider. As for my current cell phone, In case of an emergency without power, I have a crank radio which i can charge my phone with... Im not a complete moron. Just trying to get more reliable options in case one of my "brats" oh i dont know... Breaks an arm or something?

Does it run off of the internet like Magic Jack? As of right now I do not have internet, supposed to get DSL set up on the 14th unless I go through someone other than ATT by then which I really hope to... Dont have the slightest idea if dsl and broadband are the same, either...

the companys name is Basictalk. $9.99 a month plus tax = just around $13 a month total. You do need the internet for it and if you buy online the box is free. I just switched from Qwest/centurylink in Minn and love it.. all very easy to set up too........

Ok. But maybe try again with another search engine. The key is to not search for phone.

You have to search for ghetto dial up internet services for the elderly and people on public assistance. It will probably be a shady low budget looking website.

I was leery about mine but they worked out fine. They are just local contractors who dont prioritize a web presence.

Re: Trouble finding a home phone landline service... Any suggestions?
The reason I have landline through AT&T is when power goes out the telephone still works if you have an old cord phone which I do - an old wall phone. But the cordless doesn't work when power is out which is fine as long as I have the cord phone. So since I had landline through AT&T I also signed up for their DSL. The contract was for 1 year & at the end of the year they tried to get me to upgrade to Uverse saying they are doing away with DSL and my new conract was for Uverse.

Problem is they don't have Uverse installed for my area so gave me another year's contract for DSL and the landline until they get Uverse up here. But instead of paying the 19.95 I used to pay for DSL they are charging me the Uverse price of 36.00 for DSL even though they can't give me Uverse. AT&T is the worst company ever! Nothing but problems with them changing my service without telling me each year. All of a sudden I get a high bill (with no advance notice) and they give the reason because my contract is up. They are a bunch of scam artists.

Never had a problem when it was PacBell. Have had constant problems with AT&T.

The other problem is if I go to Uverse when they change to it in my area the old cord phone will no longer work when the power is out. Big problem for me because power goes out often. Was without power for 6 weeks once. There are many areas in these mountains where there is no cell reception either.

GRRRR! All I want is an old fashioned landline! I'd even go back to dial-up to get it.

So thanks for this thread, OP, because I will be leaving AT&
T as soon as this current contract is up and have been wondering what options are out there. I highly recommend not even getting involved with AT&T. They are doing away with the old landline anyway & everything will be Uverse.

Guess where I am. I don't recall any of the three ISP Telus Uniserve Shaw I have been with having a contract? It's a month by month deal. If I move I just quit their service. no penalty... Srange and sounds like a fraud score.

I may be talking something else. When I had a cell it was the size of a shoe. That was the last of that. I changed where cell phone was not important. I have a landline and am on dial-up. Still no bed of roses. when on line the phone is not usable.

Well that makes a lot of sense as to why when I told the associates at the ATT store I wanted home phone service they tried giving me that wireless home phone service. Might also be why they keep dickin me around for going back in and demanding landline service. But of course they wouldnt tell anyone that they're doing away with it... Why bother when you can just get em in a contract and then randomly switch. Bullcrap! Well I hope you find another provider! As far as going back to dial up, we went to walmart a year and a half ago an got this pay as you go internet wifi that we have been using when we needed to go online. Its stupid expensive though but we have never really been too big into the tech world so it had been working for us just fine up til now. $55/mo for 6g internet.
