Get your head out of your ass and realize you're equally just as screwed with a standard landline in case of a MAJOR emergency (power outage probably more than 3 days, longer than the backup battery inside the wireless home phone can last) as you are wireless. Seeing as you're in Oklahoma, you're main natural disaster concern should be tornados correct? Wouldn't high winds tear up those telephone lines rendering them useless IF you happen to be struck by a tornado?? I'm sure you'd be more worried about plucking your three brats out the rubble than whether or not your telephone works... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 32062218 United States 07/13/2014 01:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Google dial up providers for your area even though you may not want that for Internet. They are the only way to get a true landline now. The ridiculous thing is the smaller provider will be using ATT lines. You just have to have a middleman to get a real landline now. Nobody is going to admit that. They will tell you what you want to hear and keep sending you the wrong thing. |

When I said wireless home phone, I meant they give you a cell phone service which uses cell towers and a phone that only resembles a house phone... Exactly what I'm attempting to avoid. I HAVE a wired home phone... Just looking for a service provider. As for my current cell phone, In case of an emergency without power, I have a crank radio which i can charge my phone with... You have to search for ghetto dial up internet services for the elderly and people on public assistance. It will probably be a shady low budget looking website. January Wolves User ID: 60185733 United States 07/13/2014 03:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The reason I have landline through AT&T is when power goes out the telephone still works if you have an old cord phone which I do - an old wall phone. But the cordless doesn't work when power is out which is fine as long as I have the cord phone. So since I had landline through AT&T I also signed up for their DSL. The contract was for 1 year & at the end of the year they tried to get me to upgrade to Uverse saying they are doing away with DSL and my new conract was for Uverse. Problem is they don't have Uverse installed for my area so gave me another year's contract for DSL and the landline until they get Uverse up here. But instead of paying the 19.95 I used to pay for DSL they are charging me the Uverse price of 36.00 for DSL even though they can't give me Uverse. AT&T is the worst company ever! Nothing but problems with them changing my service without telling me each year. All of a sudden I get a high bill (with no advance notice) and they give the reason because my contract is up. They are a bunch of scam artists. Never had a problem when it was PacBell. Have had constant problems with AT&T. The other problem is if I go to Uverse when they change to it in my area the old cord phone will no longer work when the power is out. Big problem for me because power goes out often. Was without power for 6 weeks once. There are many areas in these mountains where there is no cell reception either. GRRRR! All I want is an old fashioned landline! I'd even go back to dial-up to get it. So thanks for this thread, OP, because I will be leaving AT& T as soon as this current contract is up and have been wondering what options are out there. I highly recommend not even getting involved with AT&T. They are doing away with the old landline anyway & everything will be Uverse. |

I don't recall any of the three ISP Telus Uniserve Shaw I have been with having a contract? It's a month by month deal. If I move I just quit their service. no penalty... Srange and sounds like a fraud score. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60176059 I may be talking something else. When I had a cell it was the size of a shoe. That was the last of that. I changed where cell phone was not important. I have a landline and am on dial-up. Still no bed of roses. when on line the phone is not usable. |

Well that makes a lot of sense as to why when I told the associates at the ATT store I wanted home phone service they tried giving me that wireless home phone service. Might also be why they keep dickin me around for going back in and demanding landline service. But of course they wouldnt tell anyone that they're doing away with it... Why bother when you can just get em in a contract and then randomly switch. Bullcrap! Well I hope you find another provider! As far as going back to dial up, we went to walmart a year and a half ago an got this pay as you go internet wifi that we have been using when we needed to go online. Its stupid expensive though but we have never really been too big into the tech world so it had been working for us just fine up til now. $55/mo for 6g internet. |
