The first deliverable US H-Bomb was the size of a small city bus and weighed 40,000# (ie: the need to build the B-36 bomber, which could carry 2 and had a crew of 17). What NK CAN DEVELOP in the near future though is a "Yield Enhanced" nuclear weapon. Yield Enhancement with Tritium Gas plus a couple of other tricks with even early technology can raise the yield of a decently designed early generation nuclear weapon from about 15-20kt to 200-400kt with just a very small size and weight penalty. NK has been building a facility to make Tritium and as of the end of May it was expected to be coming on line any week. (sophisticated "Yield Enhanced" nuclear weapons can become quite small ie: our Cruise Missile warhead, the W-22, only weighs a couple of hundred pounds and is in a very small package - about 8+-across and 22" inches long) I look for NK to have a testable YIELD ENHANCED nuclear weapons within a 6 months of their Tritium plant coming on line ... and to have deployable weapons shortly after their test proves their design works (ie: just weeks later). |
