Congress' spam filter blocks 1st Amendment

One by one, members of Congress are resorting to technological advances to silence your dissent or opinion. Several have begun using a spam blocker that prevents online petitions from reaching their email in-boxes. [link to seattlepi.nwsource.com]

The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees every citizen's right "to petition the government for a redress of grievances." [link to www.law.cornell.edu]

It's this passage in the Constitution that has allowed porn magnate Larry Flynt to continue sending free copies of Hustler to all members of Congress [link to www.sploid.com] for 32 years.

Though several have gone to the courts to stop Flynt's gifts from arriving in their mailboxes, the court have always ruled that the Constitution requires members of Congress to take receipt of the glossy, hard-focus smut.

Despite this, more than 60 of our elected officials have installed a filter called "Logic Puzzle" to spare them the nuisance of receiving mass emailings sent by American citizens.

"It's hard to tell how much is accomplished by jillions of online petitions and mass e-mailings. But this has been one of the last ways that a non-VIP can communicate with his/her 'representative.' They're supposed to be REPRESENTING US, remember?," [link to www.teambio.org] exclaimed Tom Harper of Bring It On.

THOSE DIRTY DAWGS
In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

My Representative doesn't accept snail mail (after the anthrax episode). He sure as hell better not be using any blocker!

I've give you credit for posting this one because it's not blatently sided with one party or another...it shits on them all.

Shitty deal...just another reason interest and petition groups should be fedexing this stuff in and picking up a phone. No reason to put that much effort into e-mail that's wiped away with the stroke of a key.

Every month since 1974, the plain brown wrappers have arrived in the mailbox of every member of Congress.

And despite efforts by some to stop its arrival, the free copies of "Hustler" keep showing up, courtesy of the magazine's publisher, Larry Flynt.

"I felt that they should be informed with what's going on in the rest of the world," Flynt explains. "Some of them didn't appreciate it much. I haven't had any plans to quit.

Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, recently tried to put a stop to it, to no avail.

"It's a disgusting abuse of the system," Cannon says. "It's a nasty, tricky little thing to do by a person with no conscience."

And Cannon's not alone. Several members of Congress have sued to stop it over the years.

Fortunately the Constitution guarantees the public the right to seek redress from Congress. So the porn keeps coming.

Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, trains his interns to spot Flynt's tithe and toss it in the trash.

“So every time we happen to get one, it ends up in the trash pretty
instantly,” says Bishop's Chief of Staff Scott Parker.

...it shits on them all.

If you mean 'all' as the GOP - AND - the Dems, yes, they BOTH deserve it and not merely concerning this subject.

I realize it's easy to paint me as a Dem, and I can understand why within the guidelines of the 'polarity game', although, as I've pointed out numerous times, I'm actually not.

My concern with Bush is as a figurehead of something I believe to be far more threatening than anything witnessed from either side of the political aisle in this nation, ever.

...interest and petition groups should be fedexing this stuff in and picking up a phone. No reason to put that much effort into e-mail that's wiped away with the stroke of a key.
 Quoting: Malice

I read somewhere several years ago, prior to the spam story, where e-mail has little, if any, impact on Congress anyway.

Yes, phone calls and letters (certified, especially) get attention, as do actual visits to Congressional offices, particularly an unruly mob carrying a rope, I suppose...
