There is internet streamed coverage of Rosetta's arrival and first orbit insertion burn just starting now, here.

The final approach burn has now completed. That was the close approach trajectory insertion burn CATI. The livestream show is now previewing the mission goals to come.

[link to rosetta.esa.int]

Rosetta is now in the process of establishing an orbit. That will begin with a series of triangular manoeuvres around 67P so that the flight dynamics people can estimate the gravitational pull of the comet.

Are you not seeing the symbology in this message? Rosetta means unravelling a mystery.

Now OSIRIS team, the husband to ISIS as depicted in the dark horse by Katy Pery? We also have them telling us that this comet will unravel the mystery of where we came from? As if the PTB don't know this already?

Something else is going on here guys.

If that team is Osiris, then the comet is ISIS. The Return of the gods.

Hi KipKat, I hope you saw the show, I managed to catch little bits of it. Here is the most recent OSIRIS narrow angle picture. The resolution is 5m to 1 pixel.

Looks more monstrous with each new image.

[link to www.esa.int]

No need for me to interpolate the images myself any more, that is from 285km on the 3rd August. We are three times closer now.

Some of things I got from the show today ( I could only catch bits of it )

During conference, talking about partner organisations
"and NASA has contributed instruments, of course NASA is not a European organisation, not yet anyway" got a laugh

"When children are curious and ask lots of questions we are proud of them, when adults do this we call them scientists"

The science teams shared some interesting early results:

OSIRIS image team said they are measuring 100m high cliffs on the surface.

Fabrizio Capaccioni on the VIRTIS imaging spectrometer team told us that the surface of 67P is predominately dry and very porous, so a dusty environment but not a rocky crust.

Sam Gulkis on the MIRO microwave antennae said they are seeing plenty of water being produced by 67P, but only on the sunlit side.

A couple of closing comments:

"We are approaching scientific Disneyland, we have just arrived and look at the view out the window already"

Talking about the Rosetta programme from now on.
"It's Christmas every day"

I dont know where the 600 TeV bit came from. I'll get to that.

But my two cents:

200 GeV, with a breakdown upon landing on surface. It cant happen before that because there is no route between the two objects for the electrons to flow through.

Do bear in mind though, that 212 GeV is unification point for the nuclear weak force and electromagnetism. So the voltage cant be much higher on the comet, otherwise it would have as much gravity as average planetary cores, and there would be no electrical discharge at all due to the movement of all electrical charges to the central point of energetic singularity. Unless the Orbiter has amassed a substantial positive electric charge.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. It is gonna change the world for sure though, no matter how it turns out. I for one strongly stand by the E.U. Theory.

the 600 teravolts is the voltage required today to send lightning boltzzz form 67P to Rosetta when calculated using field emission vacuum breakdown formula. Where were you during the approach phase? No EUers popped theirs heads up to make a prediction, now we will have to wait for Rosetta to orbit closer for sparky fun. Make your predictions now please, when do we see the lightning.

Do the math if your gonna be picky about how I gave my estimation. I'd also suggest you take some time to look over your own definitions of Electron Volts and Volts if your sure about the Mass-Energy bit. Both are kinda one in the same(Mass and Energy), and an electrical potential is needed for all energy. Otherwise you're dividing by zero, so to speak.

Not trying to get into an internet argument. I stand by a total energy transfer of =< 200 GeV

Will this comet develop a coma and a tail when it comes closer to the sun? And would they be able to see it happening through this Rosetta craft? That would be a sight to behold!

Yes it's already developing a coma, In this image the nucleus is overexposed. The coma will grow over the coming months.

For the same reason that there are no stars in the second picture; the exposure in the second picture was much faster and properly exposed the daylit surface of the comet. The coma is very dim like the stars and can only be seen by completely overexposing the nucleus as in the first picture.

As much as I enjoyed Deep Impact as a movie, it probably did a lot to mislead people. The scientific inaccuracies were rampant but less obvious to the layman than perhaps a more action oriented film like Armageddon. I see the same mistaken assumptions made by people all the time now, everything from massive thick jets of dense material coming from comets to the notion that an astronaut would be instantly blinded by the sun if his visor was up for any length of time.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51173215

OK I believe you are saying there is a 200GV potential difference between Rosetta and 67P. Using field emission, that gives us a rather disappointing 33m spark, so we wouldn't see that until Philae lands in November, still that would destroy Philae and any prediction is better than none so thanks for that.

Ok here is a quick rundown on terms.

The volt is the measure of electrical potential, electric difference, EMF or if you prefer the water analogy electrical pressure.

The electron volt is a measure of kinetic energy. It is the kinetic energy that an electron gains when it is accelerated by the pd of 1 volt. This dates back to early experiments with particle accelerators, measuring beam deflection in cathode ray tubes.

The reason why we use the term mass-energy is because in high energy physics, when you put a lot of energy into accelerating particles to relativistic speeds, you eventually no longer change their speed by very much, instead that energy is going into increasing the mass of the particle.

so the total energy of a moving particle is given by

E = sqrt( (mc^2)^2 + pc^2 )

where c is the speed of light m is the rest mass and p the momentum.

expressing it as velocity

E = mc^2 / sqrt ( 1 - ( v^2/c^2 ) )

where v is the velocity of the particle.

You want to be careful, if I remember correctly Deep Impact starts with astronomers and "pro" science covering up the existence of an "incoming" comet ( ISON ??? NIBIRU ??!?!? ) that will destroy the world. Don't make me use any more conspiracy buzz words or I will have to say "admit" and "disclosure", maybe even the "s" word.

I'm going to admit to disclosing this OSIRIS narrow angle image from the 3rd August.

More images to be disclosed later. I don't know about you but I think Rosetta is just the most interesting mission since probably Cassini - Huygens, lots of fun to come over next few months.

Seeing as you asked nicely, the alien bases may be in these close up images ( or maybe not ).

The closest images are from around 120km with a resolution of ~ 2.3m per pixel. They were captured a couple of days ago and transmitted today. This is about the best detail we will see for a while. Once Rosetta is in low orbit we will see images with about four times this resolution.

So today Rosetta caught up with comet 67P and made the first manoeuvre in establishing an orbit around the comet.

Fantastic images. Great mission so far.
But, I have to say, that is NOT what I expected a 'Comet' to look like...

I want to use this thread to highlight news from the Rosetta comet mission.

Ten years ago the European Space Agency ( ESA ) launched the Rosetta comet chaser to rendezvous with comet 67P, go into orbit around it and land a probe on its surface.

When the Rosetta mission is complete we will know so much more about comets, their composition and formation. Comets have been a cause of fear and fascination throughout human history, within the next few months many long standing mysteries will be solved.

I missed the live feed of the landing on the ESA site. I was convinced it would happen today but it was yesterday.

For once you have tasted Concorde you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.

You can watch yesterday's programme here:

This should work fine on a PC but maybe not on Android, it's on a continuous loop.

The conference was a bit dull, that's normal for ESA, but the interviews with scientists were interesting. The presenter tried to play up the big moment, but it was no "one small step"

Here are some of my thoughts on the programme.
