NAVCAM image bonanza: close orbits and comet landing

Today perhaps the most anticipated set of NAVCAM images of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko have been released by the Rosetta Downlink & Archive Team via the Archive Image Browser and ESA’s Planetary Sciences Archive.

The 1776 images cover the period between 23 September and 21 November 2014, corresponding to Rosetta’s close study of the comet down to distances of just 10 km from the comet centre – 8 km from the surface – and the images taken during and immediately following the landing of Philae on the comet.

Rosetta Now

Someone who will make great use of the new NAVCAM images is graphics artist and digital director, Mattias Malmer. One of his recent projects is to provide a view of comet 67P as it would be seen now by Rosetta. Here it is.

[link to mattias.malmer.nu]

Hold your cursor over the image to see 2 hours worth of views. The smooth sections of the comet model are those areas that have remained in shadow, but they are shrinking now. Soon the entire comet will be mapped.

Ceres chain craters

Here is a nice view of chain craters on the surface of Ceres.

[link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov]

Chain craters are believed to form when the impacting body has broken apart prior to impact. The effect of gravitational tidal forces on a low cohesion body, such as a rubble pile or comet, draws the body out into a "train" of small impactors. This process is believed to have been observed when Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 broke apart

[link to www2.jpl.nasa.gov]

and impacted Jupiter leaving a chain of dark patches on the planet.

[link to upload.wikimedia.org]

There is at least one other intriguing possibility. Ceres is thought to contain a high proportion of ices in its mantle. We have already seem images which suggest cracking or faulting of the surface, like the lower right of this image.

[link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov]

Could these chain craters have a connection with gasses escaping through fissures? Well they are not too dissimilar to these impact chain craters on Mercury [link to blogs.discovermagazine.com] but it's fun to speculate, any thoughts?

Crack

digging into the amazing new archive of NAVCAM images, here is good close view of the end of the neck crack.

[link to imagearchives.esac.esa.int]

and its host page [link to imagearchives.esac.esa.int]

It's also a nice reminder that which way is up on the comet is not always obvious. The best answer I can give is that up is away from the local centre of mass for the region you are looking at. For boulders in the top left of the image, up is towards the top right. For boulders in the bottom right corner of the image, up is towards the top left. Did I just make that worse scratching

This region is officially called Anuket, if you like that sort of thing [link to www.esa.int] The crack itself is 500m long and stretches most of the way across the neck. As you would expect many of the scientists involved in the mission are keeping a close eye on the changes in the crack. Flight dynamics and spacecraft operations are keeping their thumbs pressed for no change.

New Coma Discovery

There is an interesting new paper here [link to www.aanda.org] hosted on this page [link to www.aanda.org] from Paul Felman et al. concerning a new discovery in coma chemistry.

It had been assumed that the daughter species products of the comet volatiles, gasses like H1,O1,OH and C1, were produced by the photodisociation of the parent molecules such as H2O and CO2. The paper "Measurements of the near-nucleus coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with the Alice far-ultraviolet spectrograph on Rosetta" outlines a different mechanism for producing the daughter species.

Once molecules of water or CO2 have been photoionised, by energetic UV photons from the Sun, the ejected electrons go one to collide with other gas molecules in the coma. The electrons have energies in the range 25 to 50 eV, that is sufficient to cause electron impact dissociation of water and CO2 into their daughter products. This discovery neatly explains a puzzle of comet 67P's coma. At this distance from the Sun, very few photodisociation events should occur and yet the ( apparent ) daughter products of photodisociation are abundant.

THe team made use of data from the VIRTIS-H spectrometer to confirm relative abundances, MIRO and ROSINA to correlate production rates and OSIRIS and NAVCAM to confirm where ALICE was pointed. One particularly useful sample was taken on the 29th November when NAVCAM confirmed that ALICE was pointing at the shadowed neck region. Measurements of Lyman alpha and beta emission lines could be gathered, free from the background Ly-alpha signal of interplanetary space. The ratio of Ly-alpha to Ly-beta intensities was consistent with an electron impact dissociation emissions.

The Rosetta program is expected to cost around 1.3bn euros. That's not the same as making a big bonfire of money or blasting a pile of cash into space. That money has gone into supporting Airbus Defense & Space ( Astrium ) and Arianespace as well as a host of small companies and universities and research institutes all across Europe ( and beyond ). Spin off technologies include a miniaturised gas chromatograph that Colin Pillinger and the team at the OU developed for Ptolemy, that has gone into environment monitoring equipment for Astute class submarines and will find many more applications. I am sure the LILT ( Low intensity, Low temperature ) solar cells developed for Rosetta will find a role in tele-monitoring / survival applications at high latitudes. Rosetta spacecraft thermal control system has already found its way into everyday satellite applications.

One important reason to do the Rosetta program is for the prestige and to lay down a marker. At the time Rosetta was first proposed, ESA had only been in existence for a few months. The agency was looking for possible future missions that would challenge European aerospace to develop new technologies and rival the missions that only NASA and the Soviet programme could accomplish. It would be many years and a number of false starts before ESA was in a position to launch the Rosetta mission.

If you asked any of the scientists why do the Rosetta mission I am sure they would say it was to make new discoveries, to resolve the mysteries of comets and contribute to sum of scientific knowledge. The mission is supposed to break new ground and discover new things. If it didn't we would all feel cheated. This brings me to one of GLPs favourite memes. Any time scientists have made a new breakthrough or discovery, remember that is what they are supposed to do, they are described as being shocked and baffled. So with that in mind here is a scientist checklist list for "H1 and O1 in comets comes from electron impact disociation and not photodisociation"

Scientists are:

Interested            | X
Intrigued              | X
Mildly Surprised     | X
Baffled                 |
Shocked              |
Moving Tomatoes   |
Watchin YouToobs |

I have only watched the first few minutes but I can say Dr. Taylor is still a nervous speaker. I also noticed Chris Lintott was slouched in the first row playing with his phone every time the camera was on him. I wonder if his students do that to him?

I want to share an amazing time saving technique with you. When I look at GLP front page I usually see about 5% of threads that interest me. I work this out by reading the thread titles, they tell me what the thread is about ! When I see a thread that doesn't interest me I find I can save time by not reading it. I find I can save even more time by not commenting on threads that don't interest me, how about that!

Sunset jets

Rosetta’s scientific camera OSIRIS captured the sunset jets in the Ma’at region of the comet’s small lobe in late April. Images were taken approximately half an hour after the Sun had set over the region and show clearly defined jets of dust escaping into space.

Dawn's Schedule at Ceres

Dawn has a schedule of orbits stretching from now to December to achieve the science goals of its mission. As you probably know Dawn has an ion engine that only produces around 90mN of thrust. That is the same amount of force that a sheet of A4 paper exerts on your hand due to gravity. It can take Dawn weeks to lower its orbit to the next stage of the mission.

Currently Dawn is performing the Survey orbit at 4,430km altitude. This process began on the 6th of June and is scheduled to last until the end of the month. The framing cameras will have a resolution of 410m/pixel during the survey orbit so that is only around 17% better than OpNav 9 at 480m/pixel [link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov] [link to dawn.jpl.nasa.gov] Spot 5 will appear 62% bigger than it does in this OpNav 8 image [link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov] which is 670m/pixel.

During the survey orbit, maps of Ceres will be produced from the VIR spectrometer ( based on Rosetta's VIRTIS-M ) that may have the resolution to determine what spot 5 is made from.

After the Survey orbit is complete Dawn will continue on down to the High Altitude Mapping Orbit ( HAMO ) which it will reach by 4th August. This will give us three times better resolution at 140m/pixel. HAMO will continue until October 15th when Dawn again lowers its orbit to reach LAMO. At just 375km above the surface LAMO, which Dawn reaches in early December, will give us a visual resolution of 35m/pixel around 14x better than the OpNav9 image.

Well that didn't take long, here is Spot 5 at 410m/pixel resolution [link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov] hosted [link to dawn.jpl.nasa.gov] That is probably the best view we will get until August 4th when Dawn begins its HAMO orbit. We may be lucky and see Spot 5 during an OpNav imaging run between 30th June and 4th August but there is no guarantee of that.

Looking at the image in photoshop last night didn't reveal much detail in the spots, they are pretty much saturated. I will try and find out the resolution of VIR to see if we can expect an answer to the puzzle this month.
