16 days to perihelion! In case you missed this article, here's what to expect from the Rosetta mission as Comet 67P/C-G passes through its closest point to the Sun along its orbit (includes FAQ):

13 July 2015

Rosetta’s investigations of its comet are continuing as the mission teams count down the last month to perihelion – the closest point to the Sun along the comet’s orbit – when the comet’s activity is expected to be at its highest.

Rosetta has been studying Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko for over a year now, with observations beginning during the approach to the comet in March 2014. This included witnessing an outburst in late April 2014 and the revelation of the comet’s curious shape in early July.

After arriving at a distance of 100 km from the double-lobed comet on 6 August, Rosetta has spent an intense year analysing the properties of this intriguing body – the interior, surface and surrounding dust, gas and plasma.

Rosetta mission: footprints of Philae lander spotted on comet
Footprints made by the Rosetta probe Philae have been seen for the first time as new details of the lander's first three days on the comet are published by scientists

Pictures showing footprints made by the Philae lander as it touched down on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko have been released as new details of the mission were published by scientists.

The little probe was released from mothership Rosetta in November 12 and landed right on target. But it then failed to deploy its anchoring harpoons and retro rockets and bounced half a mile away from its original touchdown site, eventually coming to land under a cliff.

The new images show indentations at the landing site which are believed to be made by lander's feet. Researchers have also speculated that the probe may have hit a three foot wide boulder on its initial landing which could have added to the difficulties faced by the craft.

Rosetta uses a 2.9 watt transmitter and New Horizons has a 4.4-28 watt transmitter, these power levels are a small fraction of the electrical power of your average household light bulb.. but we're supposed to believe that they can transmit data of such quality over millions and millions of miles across atmosphere and solar space while you can't even get a cell phone reading in South Dakota. No, more likely the transmission datas are being sent back from a sattelite in Earth orbit that beams down a lie... and everyone at ESA and NASA are fooled into believing the data they receive, meanwhile on a remote island a handful of controllers on a "need-to-know" basis are running the show... it's all for public consumption.. they want you to believe what they need you to believe, plain and simple.

Argument from personal incredulity.

Find me a communications engineer that thinks that it is impossible.

New science result! Rosetta has detected molecular oxygen (O2) outgassing from the comet, which seems to point to a primordial origin.

28 October 2015

ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft has made the first in situ detection of oxygen molecules outgassing from a comet, a surprising observation that suggests they were incorporated into the comet during its formation.

Rosetta has been studying Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko for over a year and has detected an abundance of different gases pouring from its nucleus. Water vapour, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are the most prolific, with a rich array of other nitrogen-, sulphur- and carbon-bearing species, and even ‘noble gases’ also recorded.

Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the Universe, but the simplest molecular version of the gas, O2, has proven surprisingly hard to track down, even in star-forming clouds, because it is highly reactive and readily breaks apart to bind with other atoms and molecules.

Philae status report: “Time is running out”

Rosetta’s lander Philae has remained silent since 9 July 2015. With every passing day, Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is getting further and further away from the Sun, and as such, temperatures are falling on the comet's surface. Things are getting critical for Philae: conditions are predicted to be “lander-hostile” – too cold – by the end of January.

But the lander team are going to try another method to trigger a reponse from Philae: on 10 January they will send a command, via Rosetta, to attempt to make Philae’s momentum wheel switch on.

"Time is running out, so we want to explore all possibilities," says Stephan Ulamec, Philae lander manager at DLR.

Philae’s momentum wheel ensured that it was stable during its descent from the orbiter on 12 November, 2014.

If the command is successfully received and executed, the hope is that it might shift the lander’s position.

The search is over: we’ve found Philae!
A conclusive image was taken on 2 September, from a distance of just 2.7km.

5 September 2016

Less than a month before the end of the mission, Rosetta’s high-resolution camera has revealed the Philae lander wedged into a dark crack on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

The images were taken on 2 September by the OSIRIS narrow-angle camera as the orbiter came within 2.7 km of the surface and clearly show the main body of the lander, along with two of its three legs.

The images also provide proof of Philae’s orientation, making it clear why establishing communications was so difficult following its landing on 12 November 2014.

“With only a month left of the Rosetta mission, we are so happy to have finally imaged Philae, and to see it in such amazing detail,” says Cecilia Tubiana of the OSIRIS camera team, the first person to see the images when they were downlinked from Rosetta yesterday.

30 September 2016

ESA’s historic Rosetta mission has concluded as planned, with the controlled impact onto the comet it had been investigating for more than two years.

Confirmation of the end of the mission arrived at ESA’s control centre in Darmstadt, Germany at 11:19 GMT (13:19 CEST) with the loss of Rosetta’s signal upon impact.

Rosetta carried out its final manoeuvre last night at 20:50 GMT (22:50 CEST), setting it on a collision course with the comet from an altitude of about 19 km. Rosetta had targeted a region on the small lobe of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, close to a region of active pits in the Ma’at region.

The descent gave Rosetta the opportunity to study the comet’s gas, dust and plasma environment very close to its surface, as well as take very high-resolution images.

Pits are of particular interest because they play an important role in the comet’s activity. They also provide a unique window into its internal building blocks.

The information collected on the descent to this fascinating region was returned to Earth before the impact. It is now no longer possible to communicate with the spacecraft.
