Aeon of Horus

The third Aeon is named after the Son of Isis and Osiris, Horus. The Aeon of Horus is the Aeon we are physically living in, in the 21st Centrury c.e. this is the adolescence or teenage years for the human spirit, it is a time of questioning and rebellion. No longer should we bow our heads to humanities gods but only follow our individual True Will. We are to judge for ourselves what is beneficial for us and what is not.

This Aeon is one of analysis, where the old laws, rules and traditions are analysed; found wanting in many cases and where found wanting discarded and disregarded, consigned to history, leaving only that which is healthy; like a rose bush that has been pruned. Society as a whole has to go through this process as does each individual human being. The majority go through this process unconsciously, on the other hand the Thelemite works with the process consciously and speeds up their personal spiritual evolution and those around them by the way they have chosen to live. The Thelemite is the yeast in the bread, as the yeast raises the bread so the Thelemite raises the Human Spirit.

The Thelemite is one who had adopted the Philosophy of Thelema to live their life by. Thelema was first given literary form, when Aleister Crowley received the first of the Holy Books of Thelema, The Book of The Law. The Equinox of the Gods and the beginning of the Aeon of Horus was formally acknowledged when Crowley performed the rite known as the Supreme Invocation of Horus on the 20th March 1904 c.e.

The Age of Horus, transcends the "old gods", those of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc, who are waning in their influence and reign over mankind. They are the "Dying Gods."

The current Aeon of HORUS is perhaps the most mysterious of them all, not only because it is still largely veiled, but also because the future fate of Humankind and the Earth hang in the balance during this phase. As well as being a phase of Self-Realisation under the principle of God The Child, it is also an age in which there will be huge growth in all matters of the Spirit and the Spiritual. According to the Thelemic prophecies concerning this New Aeon, the Word of the Law is Thelema (Will), and it should be accompanied by Agape (Love), and their Magical Formula is Abrahadabra (The Great Work accomplished). This all concerns the finding of the Individuality, Higher Self, Divine Spark or Spiritual Monad and allowing the expression of the True Will to come through rather than allowing the lesser or lower will of the human personality to continue to dictate and dominate the individual. It is the opening of the Super-consciousness which will fill the human vessel with the potential to bring the Highest Spiritual Initiation down through the Inner Planes into the masses.

The Age of Horus was lain forth in The Book of the Law, it being the cornerstone of the philosophy of Aleister Crowley and it's writing / creation was the event in his life which Crowley himself believed to be the most momentous occasion thereof, and one which he himself was merely the instrument in. The Book proclaimed the dawning of The New Aeon (or period of 2,000 year ruled over by an elemental deity), The Age of Horus and outlined the Law of Thelema, "Do What Thou Wilt Is The Whole Of The Law. In his introduction to The Book of the Law, a brilliant and catastrophic work penned in 1904, Aleister Crowley described the world from the eyes of the occultist. He said the world is entering the Age of Horus, and therefore is going through a period of violent change.

Crowley explained that certain vast stars, or "aggregates of experience," may be described as gods. Each god has been in charge of the destinies of the Earth for periods of about 2,000 years. In the history of the world, Crowley said it is believed there have only been three such Gods. They are:

--"Isis, the mother, when the Universe was conceived as simple nourishment drawn directly from her; this period is marked by matriarchal government." In other words, women ruled the governments of the world. They were seen as goddesses.

--Osiris, the father, began his reign about 500 BC. At this time the Universe was imagined as catastrophic. Crowley said love, death and resurrection were the ways by which individuals built up experience. Kings ruled the earth during this period.

--Now Horus, the child, is coming into power. Crowley wrote: "this period involves the recognition of the individual as the unit of society. Every event, including death, is only one more accretion to our experience, freely willed by ourselves from the beginning and therefore also predestined."

The youth in the center represents the sphere of Tiphareth, esoterically associated with Horus. Although Horus is traditionally considered a solar deity, he is - in his aspect of avenger - closely associated with Pluto. He was the rival and conqueror of Set, his father's evil brother and arch-enemy. He is the prototype for mythological avengers Hercules, St. George, St. Michael, and so on.

The twentieth card of the Tarot’s Major Arcana - Judgment or The Aeon - corresponds with Aries, the sign which opens the solar zodiac. Astrologically, Aries is associated with new birth and masculine creative energy.

In the Gnostic tradition Horus is Io (pronounced Aho). In the Thoth deck we see him with forefinger pressed to his lips. This pose indicates the Hermetic mysteries of which Io is keeper. The letters I and O connote the Phi ratio or geometric harmony of the universe.

The "light" represented by The Aeon is a manifestation of the Universal Order which is negentropic in nature and not created by human beings. Indeed, humans are themselves emanations and embodiments of this Order. Coming into conscious attunement with the Natural Order constitutes a truly holy act, and is the goal of the Magnum Opus or Great Work. Arriving at this state of attunement requires particular forms of mental, emotional and physical purification.

Thread: Aeon Thelema

An Aeon is a period of time, its length is indeterminate in the sense that it does not rely on external circumstances to measure it, as astrology does using the stars.

The Aeons are about the past, the present, the future and the evolution of humanities spirituality.

What determines the length of an Aeon is human evolutionary development in consciousness. When our knowledge and understanding of the Universe and or our ourselves is sufficiently expanded that it changes our perceptions and practices radically then an Aeon has ended and a new one begun; this process is known as the "Equinox of the Gods" and is on a macrocosmic level, on a microcosmic level an "equinox of the gods" occurs each time each time an initiation is experienced by the individual.
