Another 'NATURE MADE IT WE FOUND IT, PATENT IT!' patent, is all this is really. But the document has a few things that I think are really telling. What immediately jumps out is

"In late November 2007, HF cases were reported in the townships of Bundibugyo and Kikyo in Bundibugyo District, Western Uganda. The outbreak continued through January 2008, and resulted in approximately 149 cases and 37 deaths2. Laboratory investigation of the initial 29 suspect-case blood specimens by classic methods (antigen capture, IgM and IgG ELISA) and a recently developed random-primed pyrosequencing approach identified this to be an Ebola HF outbreak associated with a new discovered ebolavirus species. These specimens were negative when initially tested with highly sensitive real-time RT-PCR assays specific for all known Zaire and Sudan ebolaviruses and Marburg viruses. This new species is referred to herein as “the Bundibugyo species”, abbreviated “EboBun”."


I do not know if a new, strain-specific test has been created. But if they're using the regular ELISA and PCR testing, there is no reason to believe they would not continue to yield false negatives. Like for example say...a bicyclist in Glasgow. Or a man in Tennessee. Or a woman in Charlotte.

I was wondering out loud to a friend yesterday about whether or not this could be done, a transfusion from a survivor carrying Ebola antibodies.

I'm not a medical professional, but even so...Occam's Razor is an efficient tool.

The stated purpose of the "invention" of this new form of Ebola they created in a lab by effectively sequencing 70% of the virus genome is as follows:
"Due to the sequence divergence of EboBun relative to all previously recognized ebolaviruses, the present invention has utility in design of diagnostic assays to monitor Ebola HF disease in humans and animals, and develop effective antivirals and vaccines."
Okay so how to monitor an infected person.

Also that they use the invention to test for and find an antibody in hopes of creating a vaccine:
"In another aspect, the invention provides a method of detecting in a biological sample the presence of an antibody that immunospecifically binds hEbola virus, the method comprising: (a) contacting the biological sample with the inventive host cell host described above; and (b) detecting the antibody bound to the cell."
And how to test for an infection and how to test for antibodies effectively binding and fighting the virus.

Why are viruses recreated and patented?
My understanding is that...
In order for Company A and Doctors A to commit time and resources say 10 years and 1 billion dollars in a lab and finally determine a vaccine or cure then Company A needs to have a way to make that money back if they accomplish that goal (a lot of times they don't which is why they push sales on the drugs that do get approved so hard). To get a return on investment they have to recreate the virus, patent it and then show that they created a treatment for that patented thing. Then it has to be tested against the actual non lab created virus. If it works in trials then can patent and sell that treatment. What Company A will not do is simply collect a naturally occurring culture spend years of valuable time and resources to create a treatment only to have Company B that didn't invest time and resources claim rights to or be given rights to create and sell the treatment.
Am I completely wrong here has no one else been made privy of how this process works?

There are some truly sick people around who profit from the suffering from others, so this wouldn't surprise me. The same goes for many other diseases, it pretty much shows that we don't have real healthcare anymore, it has become more like an industry.

Safe to say that the US government has a lot of such patents, and also patents for suppressed cures.

Such things makes me wonder if there isn't a cure for Ebola around, if it exists it will most probably be suppressed.

If the patient runs outside of the zone due to fear of dieing or some other reson into a populated area everyone will become infected!

Ebola patients bleed and doo doo themselves from the terrible virus unintentionally wich can spread even more.
