At the same time, Brantly received a unit of blood from a 14-year-old boy who survived Ebola, the statement said. Brantly had treated the teen, it said.

It was not immediately clear what doctors hoped the blood transfusion would do for Brantly.

While blood transfusions have been tried before, Frieden told reporters no one really knows why some people survive and some don't.

There have been questions about the the health of Brantly's wife and his children, who left for Texas prior to his diagnosis.

In a statement released Thursday, Amber Brantly said she and her children "are physically fine."

This was tried a while back on 8 patients. They were given transfusions and various levels of IV support.

Only 1 of the 8 died. Too small of a sample set to determine if it was the transfusion, but fucking hell why aren't they trying this on a broader scale? Does every recovered patient have the HIV?

I would say they need to be trying this with each patient they possibly can.

Yes, each recovered patient would have the antibody.

Since they only had enough serum for one doctor, Dr. Brantly selflessly gave it to his friend and doctor.

But he had helped a boy recover from ebola, so they transfused him with the antibodies in the boy's blood. It will be interesting to see if it works.

Also if it was some of the boys transfused blood or some part of it they would certainly be able to make more than one dose.

Its starting to stink pretty bad especially because supposedly almost 1000 people have died from this latest outbreak and from what I have heard since childhood its pretty horrific a way to die.

Re: Dr. Brantly, The Doctor Who Is Infected With EBOLA, Is Given A RECOVERED PATIENT'S BLOOD FOR ITS ANTIBODIES Against EBOLA.
This is the only treatment course that presently makes sense and isn't a shot in the dark. Ebola kills victims by subverting the immune system. Those who die do not mount a sufficient immune response to fight it off.
Researchers do not understand why some people are able to recover from Ebola HF and others are not. However, it is
known that patients who die usually have not developed a significant immune response to the virus at the time of death.

[link to www.cdc.gov]

Vaccines are difficult to develop, as the virus hides behind proteins. Recently, a Pursue researcher suggested that what kills the patient is not the virus itself, but the immune system's attempt to attack these decoy proteins.
One region of the protein seems to be involved in the virus’ ability to evade the immune system.

“The region of that protein is so variable it seems to allow the virus to escape the immune response such as one generated by a vaccine,” he said.

[link to www.jconline.com]

This was first established back in 2012, by Emory University. Two important quotes from the article.
n this study, the authors examined the role of a protein secreted in large quantities by Ebola virus-infected cells. The protein shares regions with a membrane protein that the virus expresses on its surface and uses to initiate the infection process. The authors studied antibodies generated by immunizing mice with the viral surface protein and/or the secreted protein. They determined that the secreted protein can selectively drive induction of antibody responses to itself and also compete for antibodies to the viral surface protein that would otherwise bind to and inactivate the virus.

And

The results suggest that immunity induced by a vaccine may need to reach a sufficient threshold to effectively neutralize all the incoming virus to protect against Ebola virus infection. These findings raise new challenges for Ebola vaccine design, as vaccines will probably have to be tailored to overcome or avoid the ability of the secreted decoy protein to interfere with host antibodies. Such approaches could enable the development of more efficacious vaccines to prevent Ebola virus infection.
[link to news.emory.edu]

These proteins act as a decoy, so the body fights the wrong thing and ultimately attacks itself. Meanwhile, the virus goes on its merry way.

It's also curious that they drop in "sustained infections", suggesting that people can become healthy carriers. Almost as if the body attains an equilibrium with the virus where it is no longer detrimental but still active. hide

However, it also means those who do fully recovery have immune systems that hit the genetic jackpot and created the proper antibodies. A transfusion with blood containing the appropriate antibodies would be a blueprint for the infected immune system. This has all be known to one degree or another for at least 5 years, some of it longer, so why the continued insistence on a pharmaceutical cure?

This has all be known to one degree or another for at least 5 years, some of it longer, so why the continued insistence on a pharmaceutical cure?

There is no way this boys blood would have time to develop the necessary "antibodies" to inject into someone!

:hide:

However, it also means those who do fully recovery have immune systems that hit the genetic jackpot and created the proper antibodies. A transfusion with blood containing the appropriate antibodies would be a blueprint for the infected immune system. This has all be known to one degree or another for at least 5 years, some of it longer, so why the continued insistence on a pharmaceutical cure?

I also saw on the MSM this evening that there are two American doctors infected. Dr Brantly and another Woman doctor who was actually given a vaccine but they only had one to give. Dr Brantly refused the vaccine and said the woman dr should have it.

Is she gonna live and he dies?? Will they want to inject us all with whatever they supposedly gave this lady if she lives??
 Quoting: Rogue Lemming

Since they only had enough serum for one doctor, Dr. Brantly selflessly gave it to his friend and doctor.

But he had helped a boy recover from ebola, so they transfused him with the antibodies in the boy's blood. It will be interesting to see if it works.

Him or Her?

Also if it was some of the boys transfused blood or some part of it they would certainly be able to make more than one dose.

Its starting to stink pretty bad especially because supposedly almost 1000 people have died from this latest outbreak and from what I have heard since childhood its pretty horrific a way to die.

You would think the pictures and video would be all over but yet not squat..! Lets see this Dr Brantly character in his moments of agony and despair (you know, for scientific purposes)

I don't think I really want to know the answer to this but I am going to ask anyways, how is it a horrific way to die?

Well, from the time I was a child this boogy man that they have always scared us with came along with tales of people bleeding out of every orifice and hemorrhaging blood all over. I also remember they said it killed very quickly within about a weeks time from symptoms

Hmm so the blood is from someone who revered from the flu?

I see their schemes

It took 6 days in primates to have measurable levels of Ebola antibodies.

They are not harvesting the antibodies from his blood, but transfusing the blood directly. At least, that's how experimental treatments were performed.

Yes the blood came from a young man who had recovered from ebola.

Yes, that is what they are doing. We can only pray it works. If Dr. Brantly survives, then they are on to something.

I watched the documentary on Nova that someone posted last night. (excellent)The reason these transfusions have not been tried as often as you would think is this - in remote clinics in the villages of Africa, there is no equipment to test, purify and prepare the blood. They have to give "whole" blood rather than blood products such as plasma
which is the more common practice in large hospitals. HIV/aids and malaria may also be present in the blood.
