Our National Guard troops at the Texas/Mexico border will be armed and ready to take on drug cartels

Governor Perry has made the right move, and now that we know the troops will be armed, we can be sure they will be getting a fair chance in defending themselves against the scum on the border.

Texas Adjutant General John Nichols says the troops will be armed but wisely withheld specific details from the press to prevent that information from getting to the cartels sooner than it has to, according to reports.

“f the cartel folks understand what we can and can’t do then they may take advantage of that,” he said.

The general said that deployments will begin shortly and that the troops will stay in the field indefinitely.

Governor Perry has taken some criticism from liberals and others concerned “about the perception of a militarized border with Mexico.” They call the deployment “ill-conceived,” and site a 2012 Defense Department report that says previous deployments of the National Guard to border regions have been “more ad hoc than comprehensive.”

Those observations are not without merit; a comprehensive approach is needed, and badly. However, the federal government–whose job it is to protect the border–has completely failed to implement a comprehensive policy that includes a border fence, enhanced deportation, cessation of foreign aid to countries from which the immigrants come, and so on. Failing such a policy, Perry is doing what he can.
