Volcanic Iceland: Earthquake with magnitude M 5,2 in Þorbjörn mountain (Fagradalsfjall mountain)!!!p1492

Wow , I hope all these quakes are needed to avoid a big eruption and not build up to one!

No, this is a build up! This is getting biger, not smaller event!

If this does prove to be a volcano erupting and it does make it through the ice and if it does shoot up into the sky and if there is a person there with Ebola that sneezes,-we could be in big trouble

Not so fast, they said that magma was moving. difficult to analyse and gather info with such a big sheet of ice. 40 minutes of silence as mentioned could mean there's some sort of build going on. it could fade, it could rain or shine but nevertheless it could break thru the ice cover in minutes. Just do not disminnish the reading so fast, the tremors are very intense and at close proximity of eachother!

Is this volcano expected to be as big as Eyjafjallajokull or Katla?

It depends of a lot of things, but can be clearly biger than first one!

I don´t know what to think about this one.

I know we can expect a huge glacier flood which is why roads have been closed in the area but when Bárðarbunga is being described as a dangerous volcano I don´t know what that will mean for us living in Iceland, are we only talking about the ash ? Is there actually (and remember I´m living here so don´t scare me too much ok ) a chance of poisonous gases being spewed into the atmosphere ??

To be honest, I´ve gotten more information here than on the local news but I don´t know how much of it is accurate, especially when it comes to consequences if/when it does go off.

I´m 36 years old and have lived here most of my life so earthquakes and eruptions are nothing new to me, but from what I´ve read here it seems this might be something different.

Although he TOO states that he does NOT KNOW, he'll pend to the "no eruption" side ..... anyones guess 50/50 chance, so not blaming him for chosing that side ...

My friend take care and stay tuned. Icelandic authorities usualy are very responsible and inform properly the population. This is a very very volcanic behaviour. Even the best vulcanologists are confused. But this situation can evolve sudenly.

OP (plus green karma for this thread) to keep us updated.... this is a very interesting topic and we'll see how it turns out tomorrow/wednesday...... although no one lives nearby, let's hope for the best for the population in Iceland

I live at the west coast of Norway. When Eyjafjallajökull erupted in march 2010, I could smell sulphur outside and my car got covered with white ash after a rainfall. That was a VEI 3 eruption, a rather small event. This Bardarbunga-volcano has a much bigger magma chamber and is capable of a VEI 6 eruption. The winds here usually come from west/south-west, so western Norway will be in the worst downfall area.
