Increased activity in Öræfajökull volcano noticed
Posted on June 17, 2016 by Jón Frímann

It has been noticed that earthquake activity in Öræfajökull volcano is slowly increasing. At the moment this increase is just in the form of minor earthquakes taking place in the volcano at 5 – 10 km depth (at the moment). This was covered in a Icelandic news two days ago (when this is written), the volcanologist in the news (Páll Einarsson) says this is nothing to worry about at the moment, that I agree with, mostly, he also put forward that idea this process, if it evolves into an eruption might take up to 18 years from start to finish, as was the case with Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This is where I disagree with the professor Páll Einarsson, the reason being that this process already started good 10 years ago, I also suspect that Öræfajökull volcano to be a volcano that erupts suddenly and with a lot of force once it does erupt.

The eruption in the year 1362 had the VEI of 5 and the eruption in 1727 had the explosive force of VEI=4. Both eruptions lasted several months. Öræfajökull volcano only makes ash rich, explosive eruptions, based on latest historical data and studies into the volcano history. The processes that power Öræfajökull volcano might also be different, since there is an slab of old continental crust (study: Continental crust beneath southeast Iceland) under Öræfajökull volcano, that is slowly melting due the nearby hotspot.
This means the magma is mostly silica, not far from the magma found in volcanoes found at subduction zones around the world.

There is also a second volcano this same area that has been showing sign of increased activity. That volcano is called Esjufjöll, it has even less understood activity (if any) since people moved to Iceland ~1300 years ago. There is a chance of an unconfirmed eruption in the year 1927, but it didn’t last long, maybe up to five days, it was mostly noted due a glacier flood from the area this volcano is located (small according to historical documents).

Iceland’s Hekla volcano “ready to blow”

A geophysics professor from the University of Iceland has warned people not to travel up Hekla volcano in South Iceland as it could erupt at any moment.

As reported by Icelandic news website visir.is (link in Icelandic), Hekla erupted regularly ever ten years or so from 1970 to 2000 – but has now been silent for sixteen years.

According to Professor Páll Einarsson, pressure readings within the famous volcano are now higher than before the last two previous eruptions – meaning it could blow with little warning.

“Hekla is a dangerous volcano,” says Einarsson. “We could be looking at a major disaster when the next eruption begins if we are not careful.”

“Hekla has become a very popular tourist destination. Nowadays, there are tourist groups on Hekla most of the summer,” Einarsson explain in the visir.is article.

“There are also 20-30 planes full of passengers flying right over the top of Hekla every day,” he warns. “This is a risky moment which we need to take seriously.”

New measurements have shown that Hekla has been gathering magma and internal pressure is higher than before the last two previous eruptions. “Hekla is ready – at any moment,” Einarsson concludes.

I believe the last eruption made a stronger, more lasting "soldering" of the vents, and that might be the reason why it has not erupted for 16 years, while having regular eruptions at 10-year intervals in the past. But if the pressure increases above 4000, it will eventually blow.

Just read a fairly doomy article in the Dutch-language Belgian daily De Standaard about Hekla possibly being ready to blow??

[link to www.standaard.be]

It says: we may be facing a huge disaster. Apparently the authorities in Iceland are advising against visiting the volcano as an eruption could happen suddenly.

Any more on this?

Breaking news, Múlakvisl : minour Jökulhlaup in progress (Katla).

irpsit 22/06/2016 at 12:29
Definitively it seems that a phreatic event happened in Katla. And just that.

A minor subglacial eruption would show both as tremor and a flood, like in 2011. This time we see no tremor.

This is probably caused by tectonic rebounded as summer ice melts, something that commonly occurs in Katla.

We have probably seen dike intrusions over the last few years (deep quakes), and many shallow intrusions to near the surface. Tectonic rebound could cause a tiny amount of the already shallow magma to reach near surface, thus triggering a phreatic event and also a minor flood. This shows there is not enough pressure to trigger a proper sized eruption yet. Because shallow magma still lacks pressure from below.

Only weeks of deep swarms, meaning deep intrusions of magma towards the surface, will lead to an eruption. Like it happened with Eyjafjallajokull and Bardarbunga.

Interestingly, once again, like in we see a minor jokullhlaup in Katla and increased activity at Hamarinn. It may be just a coincidence. But back in 2011 we saw two jukulhaups in Hamarinn and Katla within a week.

Well, Hamarinn did fast shift into inflation again, but the quake activity we are seeing today are south of Hamarin and not at Hamarin, and are positioned sporadic, almost like outlining a caldera rim. I do believe there is another volcano in that region that could take the credit, but I just cant remember the name.

That would be Þórðarhyrna. A central volcano on the Grimsvötn fissure swarm.

Lots of interesting activity in Iceland today. It’s like the country itself is cheering for the Icelandic football team…

Earthquake at Trölladyngja, depth 17,4 km. This is my current most area of interest around Bárðarbunga volcano. Since my maths says it has the highest probability of erupting in the near future if this activity continues to develop as it has been doing for the last two years.
