Strong earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano [updates pending]
Posted on June 26, 2018 by Jón Frímann
This article is going to be updated later with more details.

A magnitude 3,5 earthquake happened in Öræfajökull volcano at 16:57 UTC. This is a automatic magnitude and is going to be corrected later. A swarm of earthquakes seems to have started in Öræfajökull volcano.

The harmonic tremor images have not yet updated so I don’t know at the moment if any harmonic tremor has started following this earthquake swarm.

Iceland: 5 volcanoes are preparing for eruption
December 3, 2017 by Marc Szeglat

According to geophysicist Páll Einarsson five volcanoes are preparing to Iceland currently on an eruption. These 5 are Hekla, Katla, Bardarbunga, Grimsvotn and Öræfajökull. In my opinion, still belongs to this list Herdubreid, although you can consider this as part of the Bardarbunga system. Of particular concern is the situation at Öræfajökull. This volcano has the potential to be a major explosive eruption that could hamper air traffic over Europe. According to the geophysicist it could also for the simultaneous eruption of several volcanoes come. During my several months of Iceland-stay in 2004, I talked with PállEinarsson about possible volcanic eruptions. Even then, the researchers expected an imminent outbreak of Katla. This is illustrated in which temporal dimensions you have to think in the context of the geology of the planet. Today there was an earthquake M 3.2 on the eastern edge of the caldera Bardarbunga. Under the Öræfajökull, a small earthquake swarm manifested.

On the IMO site in the news section, they mention fractures in Svínafellsheiði and a potential rockslide on Svínafellsjökull. This looks fairly close to Öræfajökull. They say “Recent analysis of remote sensing data shows that the area between the fractures and the glacier margin has moved at a rate of 2 to 4 cm per year in the period from late August 2016 to late August 2017. The area in motion is about 0.5–1 km2 in size. A rough estimate indicates that about 60 million cubic metres of material are in motion. It is possible that the entire mass may be released as a single rockslide, it is also possible that the material may be released as several smaller rockslides. They also say that “Rockslides and rock avalanches on glaciers may break up the surface of the glacier, thereby adding ice to the moving material. In addition, the slide may sweep water from glacial lagoons on its way, creating a fast-flowing slurry of rock, ice, water and even air. Debris flows of this type can travel large distances.”

I can’t imagine what 60 million cubic metres of material in motion looks like.

This is about same size as Askja volcano landslide in 2014. It was around 50 to 60 million cubic meters of material that moved in that landside.

You can read about it here.

Luisport,

I believe that you will providing the real headsup to the beginning of teotwawki. seriously.

When a U.S. city gets decimated from a volcano, this fragile glass house will fall.

Do you see any recent EQ trends in volcanic areas of the U.S. that are near any cities ? You probably have already posted this info, but It really is difficult to follow the huge amount of data that you are posting!

you could actually provide a two week or so warning of when preps will fly off the shelf everywhere! It would help those that are holding back with a bit of cash to spend on last needed preps.

I totaly agree with you. Our societies are a cards house. The best country prepared for a volcanic catastrophe is Japan and Iceland. I don't know much about US volcanos but i think US are not prepared as a society, but USGS seams to be good... if i see anything i will post.

Massive landslide in western Iceland (highly localized)
Posted on July 7, 2018 by Jón Frímann
A massive landslide has fallen in western Iceland from a mountain called Fagraskógarfjall. This landslide is estimated to be 2 km wide and 1,5 km long at earlier measurements. I don’t know yet much material did push forward in this landslide but the amount is considerable. This landslide blocked a nearby river and a small lake is currently forming. It is expected that the river is going to form a new pathway past this landslide in next few hours to days. This might be largest landslide or among the largest landslides in Iceland since the year 1000.
