This earthquake swarm seems to be progressing in the same way as earlier earthquake swarms. Earthquake activity in Öræfajökull volcano only happens when magma is on the move inside the volcano. Largest earthquake in this swarm had a magnitude of 2,2 and the second largest earthquake had a magnitude of 1,9. Other earthquake activity has been as before and is mostly made of earthquake with magnitude 0,0 and up to magnitude 1,0. The magma in Öræfajökull volcano is slow moving and that is reflected in current earthquake activity. [link to www.jonfr.com] |

[link to www.jonfr.com] Jón Frímann says: August 24, 2018 at 23:12 The gas in the magma is going to decompress. The result is going to be explosive eruption with all the problems that brings. This is not going to be a normal Icelandic lava eruption. When it happens it is not going to be tourist friendly in any way. Reply BJ Deming says: August 25, 2018 at 16:23 Well, it’s not a background type of setting. Per the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program in July: “After a series of meetings between the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the University of Iceland, and Iceland Geosurvey, the Iceland Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management stated on 13 July that Öræfajökull has shown clear signs of unrest for at least the past year and a half. The report noted ongoing inflation and increased seismicity, despite a decrease in geothermal activity since December 2017. The volume change since the beginning of the unrest was about 10 million cubic meters, likely from an injection of new magma.” Thanks for your updates, Jon. I liked coverage of the big landslide earlier this year, too. |

This is the strongest earthquake in Bárðarbunga volcano for at least three months. A second earthquake with a magnitude of 3,5 happened at 00:12 UTC. This earthquake activity had earlier smaller earthquakes happening in Bárðarbunga volcano. It started yesterday (22-October-2018) with few minor earthquakes. Other earthquakes in this earthquake activity were smaller in magnitude. This type of earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano is now common after the end of the eruption in 2015. "THEY" just lowered the strongest EQ by a FULL POINT! From a 4.3 (+/-), to a low 3. During my morning check of the Icelandic MET today, I noticed the two strong EQs at Bard. Wow! Is the instument package available? The original one? Or has it sunk too far down to get a signal out? Have they replaced it with a new monitoring 'station'? (measured among other the deepening/collapse of the caldera) |

There are very low winds in the area in the coming days, which can allow the gases to accumulate to higher concentrations. There are no significant changes observed in the hydrological, gas, or seismic data in this area. People are encouraged to not remain in low lying areas where gases can accumulate and to not be close to the edge of the Jökulsá á Sólheimasandur River. |
