I admit i am inspired to post this after watching a documentary about bushmeat in Liberia, and the side blurb about Nicaraguans eating Iguanas...think about it...the UN is promoting grubs and insects as staples...why not raise those, feed them to other animals first and eat those.

Well since all the wild animals will be extinct in 300 years or so, we ought to start some more domesticating.bump

you can pull a cart with it but that isn't really a need to fulfill today

otherwise its animals that don't take up much space and eat garbage and reproduce quickly and reliably.

You just have to look at the American native cultures...guinea pigs, llamas...who knows what the Indians in North America had for pets.

Maybe because rodent and reptile meat tastes like shit?
"The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title."

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

This isn't about gourmets or even feeding the starving...its just some niches can be filled by a guinea pig or monitor lizard. you can't argue about venison.

It's just some species are not optimal for all environments...the Finns and their reindeer can't be everywhere, and the iguana battery can't be in Sweden...if people would raise a hamster instead of goats, some deer/gazelles instead of cows or pigs etc.

it depends where you are. People eat guinea pigs where they live, in the UK people often keep rabbits for the table. You couldn't domesticate a monitor lizard, they would eat you, same with wild alligators and crocs. We are prey animals to them, as others are to us.

Still, there are croc farms...not that i want anyone to eat them, cats and dogs were ferocious and also diseased creatures in the wild.

I am sure they can be made docile...you aren't meant to have them as house pets directly. eg. compare a pig to a boar.

It is pretty wasteful to even attempt to make an apex predator into a kind of cattle...how many pigs and goats do you need for the croc farm...salmon farms for a killer whale.

I WOULD IMAGINE THAT OVER THE EONS, MANKIND HAS EXPERIMENTED WITH DOMESTICATING DAMN NEAR EVERYTHING AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER... AND SOME ARE MORE COMPLIANT THAN OTHERS.

Afterall, COWS are docile peaceful creatures for the most part, but other similar large animals that could fulfill the same requirements of food and leather like Buffalo are not.

Why work harder than necessary?

Take the Liberian example...people hunt for bushmeat, keep trained monkeys as pets, then eat them...might as well domesticate any other jungle animal there that does not perpetuate ebola.

You are right, but say you have a monoculture threatened by a pest...or large, fallow lands that you can't utilize for your livestock...or maybe only for your current livestock.
