If its going to make people think twice about buying a bottle of sugar, which effectively what it is, that's a good thing.

I can think of 100s of products which could go down the same route.

It's a tax on the poor. Statistically the poor, working poor, and middle class drink the most soda.

They should tax the fuck out of the companies making the over sugery drinks/food! Hit the dealer not the addict.

They always increase taxes on "addictive" items: tobacco, alcohol, sugar, fuel. if you can't live without it, it's getting milked- water is next.

Well, history disagrees....they tax the shit out of tobacco, same people smoke...

No matter how you feel about sugary drinks, a free person should be allowed to consume what they choose.

Is the amount of Tax they put on Tobacco enough though? We can't go down the road of banning Tobacco that would drive crime through the roof. The only other option is to make it more expensive for the buying consumer through taxation. Making that person think twice about buying it is a step in the right direction.

On your first point....What gives the government the authority to do that? They just want more control. Since when does the government "care"?

To your second point, it does have to do with Liberty. Because "The right thing" to you, might not be "the right thing" in my opinion, so why should your morals be forced on me.

As for the third point, I never said lower the prices of that stuff...just that the government has no right to tax it.

What to raise Taxes on products? Junk Food and cigarettes are making nations sick by the day and its getting bigger. The USA being the biggest one! And your attitue is ''What gives the Government the authority to do that'', are you sick in the head? Do you have stock in a cigarette or a Twinkie company?

People are dying every day because of this Pandemic. The people who elect the Government should be telling the Government to take action on this matter. Not sit around and debate the rule book.



They only have control because we give it to them. Taking control over Taxes on Junk food and Cigarettes is something that benefits Society and would benefit Children the most. The only people who would lose out on this would be the Companys who make Cigarettes and Junk Food. Which is a Good thing!

You have Liberty to Disagree with it. If you happen to be in the Minority, which i believe you are, then you just have to deal with that. Living in a Democracy means that you won't get everthing your way!

Just because it isn't in the Governtment rule book doesn't mean its the wrong thing to do. We need to take action on this and if it means getting the Government changing something, then so be it!

Oh and by the way, we were not supposed to be a democracy, the minority ruled by the majority...we are a constitutional republic. Where the rights of the minority are protected.

Taxing Certain Products that are slowly killing people isn't a big ask and it wouldn't fundamentally change your structure of Government. It would fundamentally hurt the pockets of the people selling this stuff, who don't care about anything other than Power and Dollars.

If the USA made this positive effort, i believe many countries around the world would follow and how great would that be!

The Cunsumer will have to pay more for the likes of Marlboro, Mars Bars and Coca Cola, even cheep Alcohol. The intention behind such an action would be to help crack down on Diabetes and Obesity. Why? Because its making people very sick and killing them.

The only people i see losing out on this are the people selling this crap and the pharmaceutical industry.

At the end of the day, if no action is taken, its only going to get worse and people in the near furture are going to look back an wonder why no serious action was taken.
