The medical team at CSIA has planned a five-step process for the safety of passengers, including parking the aircraft at an isolated bay. “The passengers will be screened at the step ladder itself. Those without symptoms will be cleared,” said an airport spokesperson. We have been told that more than 100 passengers (on 7 flights) are suspected to have been exposed to Ebola Made me shake my head, from your original link: According to a senior doctor in the BMC, only end-stage cases of Ebola virus are infectious. “The asymptomatic cases are not infectious and can be quarantined with other suspected cases in the same ward. Only when we are sure that they are infected, will we isolate them in totality,” the doctor said. Kubal said, “Right now, we are focusing on creating beds for suspected cases. Isolation chambers are not immediately possible.” Can someone explain to me how they're going to identify those who are infected but not yet symptomatic in a planeside inspection? I'm no medical whizkid but hey? |

We have been told that more than 100 passengers (on 7 flights) are suspected to have been exposed to Ebola I'm sorry, I've spent months at a time in India and although the people in general are very kind and hospitable, the concept of "clean" is not what we think of here in the west. I stayed at the Hotel Oberoi, one of the most expensive luxury hotels in Delhi, and watched in horror as the housekeeper cleaned first the toilet and then the bathroom sink using the same rag. She thought she was cleaning my bathroom....I wondered how many toilets that rag had seen. On another occasion I was flying up to Kashmir from Delhi. The clerk at the airport check-in counter told me my suitcases were too heavy, it was not allowed. I said okay, I will pay extra. He say So sorry madam, it is too heavy. I said Yes yes, I will pay the extra. He said, it is too heavy for the plane. (Probably 85 pounds in two suitcases.) I said Oh, I see, well I will be right back. I stepped to the side and moved about thirty pounds of stuff out of my suitcase into my carry on bag, and went back to the counter. When he weighed my luggage again he said "Very good, madam." Well, duh, it's all going on the same plane. They don't bother to weigh your carry on bag. Genious, right? So when I hear that they are creating a 120 bed quarantine for ebola, I just shake my head. I know they are well intentioned but the devil is in the details. It will be a miracle on the level of sainthood if they don't cause an epidemic there. The slums of Mumbai are no joke, this is a disaster in the making. I feel very sad about this. |

This is beyond fucked up! Given that most of us know ebola (and really, most contagious disease) is transferable before symptoms appear, this really is indefensible. In reality, each non-symptom individual needs to be quarantined separately. One bad apple will spoil a bunch if you were to stick them all together. If you miss just one infected individual, you risk epidemic. This is a bad precedent to be set, but, really, India is doing more in this regard than most...it's just not nearly enough. |
