Quoting: Major 59120740 Presumably in order to survive an EMP? Is that one of your most probable doom scenarios, or is it just bad enough that it's worth worrying about even if its a marginal possibility? Firestone User ID: 56191653 United States 09/01/2014 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've literally heard of people digging a hole in the ground and using an old train car for shelter. And of course guns and ammo. Cb radio, batteries that can be recharged with solar power devices and a clean way to heat and cool the place. Most of this type of stuff can be found on amazon under camping and survival supplies. Something like this could have multi uses i.e. storms, war, solar flares etc. Mother-n-law suite. Joke, joke. If nothing else it would increase property value. Last Edited by Firestone on 09/01/2014 12:46 AM As Mulder once said, "the truth is out there". Seems most folks are anticipating a short period of intense doom followed by more business as usual. Firestone User ID: 56191653 United States 09/01/2014 01:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My next major purchase in getting prepared is to buy a generator and rig it to where it can run off solar power and be ready to live off the grid if necessary. I would love to have a ham radio like my neighbor does. As Mulder once said, "the truth is out there". "We want to be the band to dance to when the bomb drops." - SLB |

Mine is great. When the time comes I will be able to charge batteries, monitor the emergency channels, listen for news and information and silently have electricity when I need it. And the best part...it can be available for years. Millions of unusable cars with batteries for the taking. Hopefully clear skies and sun light when things settle down. My solar power generator system is my most precious prep. |

Many flavors of doom here and while I don't pretend to know what would be useful in a book of revelations style event, I wouldn't want to preclude that discussion. I've been flirting with the idea of wind power to supplement the intermittency of solar, but I suspect the assholes near my bugout location would shoot it. Grid tie with battery backup solar seems like a good bet, so that it has some utility and payback even if things don't get quite as bad as I fear. I keep hoping someone will make a consumer version of a home hydrolysis and hydrogen storage device to serve as a more long term repository for excess power generation, but I don't see that happening quickly.
