If you had $30k to spend on preparations
how would you employ it?
That’s the thing about progress; all the word means is “continued movement in the same direction.” If the direction was a bad idea to start with, or if it’s passed the point at which it still made sense, continuing to trudge blindly onward into the gathering dark may not be the best idea in the world. Break out of that mental straitjacket, and the range of possible futures broadens out immeasurably.

Get a truck from the 70's or earlier, with no computer components vital to the truck running. buy, have land, shelter to retreat with all water, fuel, food, cold climate clothing etc. for several months, even up to a year. Weapons/ammo are a close 2nd. on this list I am listing now.
What you have stays with you, if you know how to defend yourself and family. Spend your money now, get ready.

Presumably in order to survive an EMP? Is that one of your most probable doom scenarios, or is it just bad enough that it's worth worrying about even if its a marginal possibility?

Location is probably one of the most important things you can do... Get away from the craziness. If I had lots of money i'd buy a 100+ acre property in northern Alberta.

Re: If you had $30k to spend on preparations
I would build an underground shelter stocked with six months food, water and supplies and get a mobile generator, plenty of fuel, marine batteries to power dc to ac inverters to power small appliances inside.

I've literally heard of people digging a hole in the ground and using an old train car for shelter. And of course guns and ammo. Cb radio, batteries that can be recharged with solar power devices and a clean way to heat and cool the place.
Most of this type of stuff can be found on amazon under camping and survival supplies.

Something like this could have multi uses i.e. storms, war, solar flares etc.
Mother-n-law suite. Joke, joke. If nothing else it would increase property value.

I've already spent years and twice the money covering this. All done and topped off. Just waiting now and enjoying life. I hope I can hang on till total doom finally gets here.

Pretty diverse lot of responses, as I'd hoped. Seems most folks are anticipating a short period of intense doom followed by more business as usual.

Re: If you had $30k to spend on preparations
My next major purchase in getting prepared is to buy a generator and rig it to where it can run off solar power and be ready to live off the grid if necessary. I would love to have a ham radio like my neighbor does.

I will say the most important thing after the food and water was getting a solar generator with foldable Solar Panels that are portable. Mine is great. When the time comes I will be able to charge batteries, monitor the emergency channels, listen for news and information and silently have electricity when I need it.

And the best part...it can be available for years. Millions of unusable cars with batteries for the taking. Hopefully clear skies and sun light when things settle down.

My solar power generator system is my most precious prep.

Intentionally left open. Many flavors of doom here and while I don't pretend to know what would be useful in a book of revelations style event, I wouldn't want to preclude that discussion. Never know what pieces have slipped your planning.

Ac, where did you find your solar powered generator? Can it run off fuel as well. The silence of it would be a plus...

Tempted to do just what you're saying. I've been flirting with the idea of wind power to supplement the intermittency of solar, but I suspect the assholes near my bugout location would shoot it.

Grid tie with battery backup solar seems like a good bet, so that it has some utility and payback even if things don't get quite as bad as I fear.

I keep hoping someone will make a consumer version of a home hydrolysis and hydrogen storage device to serve as a more long term repository for excess power generation, but I don't see that happening quickly.
