What would happen to the prison population in a SHTF situation??

I remember something now from years ago.
The plan in a SHTF situation is to just shoot them all.

i would hope they let the non violent offenders go and just leave the rapists, pedos and killers to rot. sorry to sound so ?heartless? but hey, we are talking a shtf situation.

2) they ALL get recruited into a private mercenary army by the government/elite, to control/kill any troublemakers

I've seen C.O.'s walk off post for a lot less than a SHTF scenario. The inmates will be left. It happened during Katrina in New Orleans:

They will be left to die more than likely and the prisoners will eat rats or other prisoners to survive.

Perhaps but only if they can open the cell doors no?

Lower security prisoners are released according to various state and federal protocols.

those on death row and other violent criminals are executed.

Human, it's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

When we can no longer afford to feed and house them, they will be set free.

The rumour about this, in the USA at least, is that there are plans to exterminate them all.

In our local jail when the electricity all over town went out the jail backup generator didn't go on. It was early evening so the C.O.'s were out with prisoners in the day rooms. Most of the C.O.'s locked themselves in empty cells.

The generator was supposed to be fail safe so the sheriff's office thought the power breach was due to a break-in/break-out as all officers inside did also.

Only two C.O.'s followed protocol & stayed in the pitch black day rooms with the inmates (each with about 70 to 80 inmates) with only their flashlights & pepper spray. No radios were working & auto doors to pods locked. Both officers managed to maintain control for 4 to 5 hrs. until lights went back on. And one of the officers was a female. Both officers said inmates were more afraid than they were and were easy to handle. They both got letters of commendation.

Not a shtf scenario but still tense. But I think most C.O.'s would just abandon inmates to fend for themselves and not follow procedure.

Not sure about the prison population as that's their problem but if I lived near a prison under such circumstances, I would be bugging out far away from said prison.

After the guards loot the food and supplies they will flee. There will be some trustee prisoners who will be able to get out and they will only let out prisoners from their own gang/race. The rest will die of dehydration.

Apparently there is a plan in place, if there is a breakdown of government, the military is to shoot them all.

I often wonder this.

In a situation where the grid goes down, will they be trapped inside or let free?

I have a sneaking suspicion it will be like in The Stand where they will be left in cells to rot and those who can get out may survive, but it will be an ugly motherfucking mess.

Not to mention the trigger happy guards who go on shooting sprees when they realize that there is no more accountability.

Fucking ugly.

I assume it will be like an animal shelter before a long weekend - lots of culling to cut down on paperwork and long-term hassle.

Sad that they can reduce human life to that of an unwanted stray.

Just talking about this scenario yesterday and I had this same thought.
Don't know that the staff, guards, warden, etc. would stick around to follow any kind of protocol- especially if they couldn't contact family.
Many would assume someone else was handling it, some wouldn't care, and a few would relish the thought of them slowly perishing in their cells, no doubt.
