AkashicRecord (OP) User ID: 62194624 United States 09/05/2014 05:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How can you go wrong when you have a knob named "girth?" Quoting: AkashicRecord With DCOs you can do FM. The A6 has exponential and linear FM, but it's really REALLY sketchy because of the analog oscillators. It's a bitch to tune a single voice perfectly, but you can do it. Thus, mono FM sounds using a single voice is about the most useful. Not good in poly. Here's a good vid on FM: [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] OK.....mind blown. lol I think I'm gonna' stick to digital. One thing that really stood out about FM for me was the Sega Genesis game console. It's sound processing chip was purely FM, 4 operators per channel, 6 channels. Yamaha YM2612: [link to en.wikipedia.org] I used to do some assembly language programming in the late 90's for a Un*x-based Sega Genesis emulator (when none existed), and there were issues with the emulation of the sound processor chip that needed to be fixed... This would do weird things like make a funky incorrect "fart-like" sound when picking up an apple in Streets of Rage. chuckle: Oh, those were the days for sure. I have great respect for Yuzo Koshiro who did the music for those games. He really knew his shit, and was a great programmer of a very difficult to work with FM synthesis system. Back to the Andromeda...when I got that I also threw together some shit version of some of that game's music using some of my keyboards (A6 and Juno-60). Should have used my Kurzsweil K2000VP for the piano... :( [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] That's another very powerful sampler synth, and also incredibly hard to program. It had something called V.A.S.T. which was a very powerful architecture that had some very unique algorithms for sound-mangling. That synth did NOT go up in value like the A6, more like $2000 down to $400 in a few years. Oh, well... you win some, you lose some. Sorry, that message is no longer in the database. |

I was going to find some K2000 stuff, but this K2661 deserves a listen. The K2000 is very similar to the 2500 series, most of the later units add much better FX and other bells and whistles. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62559571 I got rid of mine when half the voices decided to stop working. I didn't need that unreliability. That's not good gear! That's unfortunate. How many hours runtime did it have you think? I only once had voices not tune, but waiting about 10 minutes and running auto-tune again was fine. Only happened once, and it was only after the unit hadn't been booted in quite some time. Maybe over a year. I chalk it up to a too cold tuning. Did you ever run the reset diagnostics? There are a few startup modes to clear things like tuning tables, etc. Last Edited by AkashicRecord® on 09/05/2014 09:58 PM Sorry, that message is no longer in the database. |

Apparently the chips needed replacing but no repair geezer would touch it and Alesis were no help whatsoever. Had great potential. I went modular after that and haven't looked back. Different beast though. |

Really sucks that the Sub OSC is busted though. That thing is nuts on bass when it works. Here was an unfinished noodling with its sequencer running a little diddy into the guitar input on my Line 6.
