Premenstrual Syndrome - Women blame PMS as an explanation for rage or sadness
Medical professionals and other people believe that PMS might be a socially constructed disorder rather than a physical illness.

Most supporters of PMS as a social construct believe PMDD and PMS to be unrelated issues: according to them, PMDD is a product of brain chemistry, and PMS is a product of a hypochondriatic culture. Most studies on PMS and PMDD rely solely on self-reporting. According to sociologist Carol Tavris, Western women are socially conditioned to expect PMS or to at least know of its existence, and they therefore report their symptoms accordingly.

A variety of problems, such as chronic depression, infections, and outbursts of frustration can be mis-diagnosed as PMS if they happen to coincide with the premenstrual period. Tavris says that PMS is blamed as an explanation for rage or sadness.

Um the loss of blood causes the lower moods. Because it weakens the body. If women had a way to quickly replace the loss of energy they would be in better spirits leading up to their period.

I don't think its socially constructed its a reality and the pains of periods can get quite bad for some women too! Painful.. men can only imagine what its like.. cramps are no fun!

It is what I called "respulse for responsability". People tend to blame anything else for their problems. Blaming something else, somehow makes them think they are not resposible for their own problems.

So...a measurable change in hormone levels has no affect? My ovaries feel like they are getting stabbed with a knife because I've been "trained" to believe that? My low back pain for 3 days is because of what I learned in health class? Scarlet red blood exiting my body profusely has no physical symptoms associated with it? It's psychosomatic?

That's bullshit, dude.

Be glad you do not have to experience it every 3-weeks to a month. It's pretty fucking terrible.

Believe it or not, MANY women take it easy and keep to themselves as much as they can for a few days.

Hang out with grounded women.

The women who are less aggressive more than likely have a lot less pain. Those in pain will naturally be more upset around that time and snappy.

1580s (earlier in various Latin and French phrases), from Latin per "through, during, by means of, on account of, as in," from PIE root *per- (1) "Base of prepositions and preverbs with the basic meanings of 'forward,' 'through,' and a wide range of extended senses such as 'in front of,' 'before,' 'early,' 'first,' 'chief,' 'toward,' 'against,' 'near,' 'at,' 'around'" [Watkins]. Cognates: Sanskrit pari- "around, about, through," pura "before, formerly;" Avestan pairi- "around," paro "before;" Old Persian pariy; Hittite para- "on, forth;" Greek peri "around, about, near, beyond," paros "before," para "from beside, beyond," pro "before;" Latin pro "before, for, on behalf of, instead of," porro "forward," prae "before;" Old English fore (prep.) Who cares. All i know is if i have to take a massive dump i don't use it as an excuse to abuse others. If i am sick i dont lash out at everyone.

If a woman can't control herself on her rag i kick her right the fuck out of my life. No use for that bullshit.

Thank goodness I am too old to have this problem anymore.

PMS was a nightmare............. It was the only time I felt rage, hate and cried a lot. Ovulation was a nightmare also, over sex drive from hell.

A very real problem, not by choice or excuse.

It's real.

I'm older now, but PMS really wasn't identified when I was younger and had it. I couldn't understand why I was upset over every little thing until I read about it later. If I remember correctly, it only lasted about 2-3 days, but my husband (ex now) always called me a raving bitch once a month. He didn't know what it was either. I couldn't understand what was happening. The two cups of coffee in the morning didn't help. Made it worse...felt like I was jumping out of my skin.

I look back now and wish I knew about it then and just calmed down knowing what was happening to my body and mind. As I said, I am older...I'm so calm. Nothing ever upsets me now.

Take the herb Dong Quai....it really helps! I see they sell "Nature's Way" brand at Walgreens. It's probably sold everywhere. You will have no pain! Take a few days before onset of period and first two days. Don't have to take it everyday for 30 days. I found it too late to help me cope through my 20's and 30's.

Nature's Way Dong Quai Root -- 100 Capsules @ Walgreen's, $9.59.
