"Sir, I pulled you over because you were not wearing your seatbelt.
As a public safety officer I want to make sure you go home to your friends and family tonight in excellent health, unharmed."

Could I please see your drivers license?

BAM! BAM BAM!!! "MUTHA FUKKA!"

"Now don't you feel safer?"

"You can thank me later."

Thank God for dah Cams as No one would believe the suspect ran from the police while attempting to gain fast access to a possible weapon. Shooting justified!

Re: COP ASKS MAN FOR LICENSE, SHOOTS HIM WHEN HE GOES TO GET IT
I have a serious question! Why do cops feel so threatened by you getting out of your vehicle when pulled over.

I was pulled over once new the State Trooper vehicle so I got out but it was a newbie being trained by my friend whom was in the passenger seat. The newbie SHOUTING GET BACK IN THE CAR RETURN TO YOUR VEHICLE WITH HAND ON GUN. So I got back in the car and waited for him to approach the window.
 Quoting: Lost N Dying World

Training. It all comes down to training. The police academy trains officers to think that the whole world is after them. It takes time for the new officers to have good situational awareness and street smarts. Why didn't your friend tell you that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63252547

Never thought to ask. I guess they have a lot of people who will jump out of the vehicle and begin to jump down there throat as to why they was stopped.

Why is remaining in your vehicle safer for the cop then having you get out and stand beside it where they can at least see your hands.

Usually people pull their license out of their wallet, they don't turn from the cop and go digging for it in their car seat.

I can understand how a cop in high alert mode could think he was going in his car to grab a gun.

Is the cop at fault in this scenario? Yeah, he was quick to judge but I feel the cop's action is within reason.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3042112

"High alert mode" for a seatbelt violation eh ?

Risk murder over a seatbelt ticket , sounds logical
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31543670

You would be surprised by the number of people who are arrested because of a minor traffic offense. Imagine 2 cars driving down the road. One car is 20 miles over the speed limit and the other has a headlamp out. Which car should the officer stop?

Now imagine that you are the person driving 20 miles over the limit while the driver of the car with a broken headlamp just robbed a store some time ago and there are warrants out for his arrest. Which car do you want to be stopped now?

In my 20+ years as a cop, I very rarely knew that I was stopping a bad guy. The vast majority of the people who I arrested, went to jail based on dealing with the occupants of the vehicle and investigating.

Re: COP ASKS MAN FOR LICENSE, SHOOTS HIM WHEN HE GOES TO GET IT
Again...I want to make the point that many, if not most, of these stops are...

U N N E C E S S A R Y.

Unless you are looking for a criminal through the license plate, or someone fleeing an accident, or going 100 mph, there is NO REASON to be stopping most people. Cops do it to justify their jobs, they're probably bored much of the time, or because they are actually REVENUE collectors for their towns/districts, and they're supposed to run up the tickets to make money. That's what most of these stops come down to....tickets to make money.

Cops should RARELY stop anyone unless there is an obvious crime that has been committed, or about to be committed. Anything else is unnecessary and dangerous, especially with these timid and poorly trained cops.

We need to get back into the frame of mind that transporting ourselves - DRIVING - is a RIGHT. Not a "privilege" which is what the liberal establishment has been telling us for decades and which most people have been brainwashed into believeing. Unless you have or are about to committ a violent crime, DRIVING IS A RIGHT, and cops should not be bothering you. We have far too many police anyway, and far too many prisons for "crimes" that are just tax raising schemes.
 Quoting: mehitable 1524722

Actually, DRIVING is not a right, but TRAVELING is a right.

Driving is about commerce.

Traveling is about people going from point A to point B.

You seem to know a little bit about the law, but not enough. Even if you do know the law and you do prevail in the end, that won't educate the police nor will it stop you from being pulled over abd cited.

The system is broken, ON PURPOSE.

As to the number of police officers.... yes, there are too many. Do you know why? If you say it's for revenue collection, you are only partially correct. Let the fact that the police are now dressing in COMBAT gear and driving combat vehicles enter your consideration.

The police are becoming an internal army because martial law and foreign troops will be here soon.

Hmmm.......... you feel strongly both ways, do you?

He was quick to judge AND reasonable too?

There is nothing "reasonable" about shooting an unarmed person who is not attacking you. Did the officer have reason to be concerned for his own safety? Of course. He drew his weapon and pointed it at the driver. He was ready for a confrontation if one was coming, but shooting was not called for.

Why do so many cops value their own lives more than the people who they were hired to serve? Why are so many cops willing to hurt and kill other people if they feel threatened? What did they think they would feel when they took the job?

Good judgement and courage are required to be a good police officer and this officer crossed the line by shooting when it was not required.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63252547

Did the officer have reason to be concerned for his own safety?

I believe the cop said he was being questioned due to a 'seatbelt violation'. Very unsafe thing to do. That sounds like reason enough. I mean, if the guy doesn't care about his own safety, he's just as likely to put a bullet in the cops head.

Good call by the officer. Thinking ahead.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3327691

Ahh......... except I know more than you. I did that job for over 20 years. I have experienced far more than a single man reaching into his vehicle to retrieve his license and I never shot at anyone. Came close a few times with ARMED suspects.

Good judgement and courage. Nothing is more important than those things if you want to be a good police officer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63252547

If you did the job for over 20 years...why does the officer insist you stay in your vehicle till he approaches you.

I used to work for the Dept. Of Public Safety. If these young men, state troopers, are this scared of being shot. They should to look for another line of work. Wimp, needed to be fired!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56191653

Yes I thought that too he valued his own life rather than the life of bystanders and the guy he pulled over, he could have easily got behind the vehicle and still had the upper hand.

He blew it his whole carrier came down to this one incident.
 Quoting: Lost Angel

the victim was hit in the hip and will fully recover and probably receive a nice check to boot. the cop was fired.... maybe some other punishment follows? idk

its very fortunate no one else was hurt and most of all no one died. that this cop loses his career is minor... he needs to be in something else obviously.

that said... this was a mistake, albeit a bad one but still a mistake. there was no mal intent.... nothing for al sharpton to sink his teeth into.

those that hate cops will still hate cops, but i doubt they would want the job. for those quick to judge, maybe this is why some cops are edgy:

Re: COP ASKS MAN FOR LICENSE, SHOOTS HIM WHEN HE GOES TO GET IT
My story from the early 80's. I was maybe 21 I can't remember. I was pulled over because I had a headlight out. I was ordered to pull over into a dark parking lot. I rolled down my window and the officer told me I had a light out. (prob doesn't matter but I'm white and he was black. At the time at 5'4 I prob weighed 110 lbs) I said, "Oh, I know. I bought a new one but I can't figure out out to put it in." So far the conversation has been pleasant. However, in my naivety of a crime free youth , I thought nothing of my next move. I said to him, "See." Then I reached over and down to the floor on the passenger side and grabbed my new light to show him. When I turned around to show him through the open window I looked up and he had a gun pointed at me. I screamed ,"What the fuck? Ahhhhhhh" He screamed, "Jesus Christ lady" I said, "Why are you pointing a gun at me?" He took a minute to gain his composure. He put his gun away and proceeded to explain to me never to reach for something in your car when an officer can't see what you're doing. He said he had no idea what I was doing. Of course being so young I said to him are you crazy? Do you really think I'm going to shoot you? Do I look like someone who is going to shoot someone? He told me I'd be surprised by what people do, no matter who they are. I asked him if he would help me put in my light while he was here and he said he wasn't allowed to do that. No ticket - just two heart attacks. Sooooo, lesson learned long ago - don't suddenly reach for something in your car when a policeman has pulled you over. I just assumed he knew what I was doing when I said,"See" after I told him I had my new light right here. I had and still have never had a gun pulled on me. They are big and the person behind it can kill you with it. I'm no longer 21 and it's no longer the 80's so I imagine today I'd be dead or wounded after that encounter.

Seasoned officers are less concerned about such things, but newer officers are trained in the police academy to keep people in the car for officer safety issues.

I have done the whole enchilada. I have left people in their cars. I have had them sit with me in my car. I have stood outside with them on the side of the road.

I'll tell you straight up....... no cop can speak for other cops. Everyone of us did things a little differently. The bottomline is that most officers are just trying to keep themselves safe.

The officer in that video had a right to be concerned by that driver's behaviour. The officer could not see what was happening because there were no windows on the vehicle. The officer simply used bad judgement when he shot the driver. The officer failed to use tactics to keep himself safe that did not include shooting someone who did not pose a real threat. The driver heightened my own sense of danger by his sudden movements into the vehicle, but not to the point that I would have drawn my gun. I likely would have closed in on him with my hand on my own gun and then seen what happened from there.

This was a very unfortunate event. When the officer first speaks, he seems to be calm and friendly. His training failed him.

I never have my wallet on me while sitting in a car. It's always in glove box or in pocket behind the seat. Can't go by usually. In 1990's I had been pulled over for running the left turn light. Had hands on the steering wheel so cop could see them. He asked for my DL and I turned to the center console where my wallet was. Out of corner of my eye I see cop reaching for his gun. I leaned back and let him see what I was doing while telling him my DL was in that console.
Haven't had an issue with cops since but if asked for info I would tell them what I was doing first. Sometimes you just don't think about the other person's concerns. But this cop went way overboard. Shooting in a gas station? Lucky the whole place didn't blow up.

I do blame the cop for using bad judgement. The police are not the rulers of society, they are supposed to be the referees in society. People are not supposed to learn how to deal with the cops. The cops are supposed to learn how to deal with the multitude of different types of people in society.

You seem to believe the fantasies that Hollywood has given you. The real world of police work is far different from that.

Yeah? I bet 90% of them because your piggy snout found a joint or a pipe or some bullshit.

Thanks for keeping us all safe!

Your anger issues are clouding your judgement. If you have read this entire thread, you don't see me cheerleading for the police or any of the govt for that matter.

I retired before 9-11.

9-11 opened my eyes to many things including the law. Especially the law. Can anyone unring a bell once it's been rung?

You can beat up on me if that makes you feel better. I rather enjoy having the slow thinkers take pot shots at me. They are so emotional.

If you are not a slow thinker, you might try educating yourself and then start educating others. Right now, you have only told me that you have anger issues toward the police instead of directing your attention to the people who pass the laws.

You're damn right I'm angry.

People like you are the reason for much unjust pain and sorrow in this world.

If goons like yourself stood tall and didn't enforce the unjust bs laws that get passed through channels that the public can not block, anger wouldn't be part of the equation.

Cops are the slow thinkers, friend. It's a job requirement of someone so unethical, they intentionally bow down to an obviously corrupt/unjust system and follow it blindly. All the while ruining lives of people they pledge to protect.

If you have in fact changed your ways after leaving the force, I commend you. We all did dumb shit in life, education is a life long quest.

Your anger is your anger.

You are blaming me as if I am still out there doing the things that you dislike. Perhaps you think the same way about alcoholics and druggies. Once a drunk, always a drunk. There is no such thing as FORMER in your worldview?

Poor people will always be poor?

Uneducated people will always be uneducated?

Once you control yourself, then you might be on your way to helping others. Right now, you are just bring back some good memories of my days as a cop. Just because I didn't understand the world back then like I understand it now, that does not mean that I did not do more good than harm.

I hope God is more merciful towards you and your failures than you are to those of us who have also failed in some ways.

It's interesting you bring this issue up.

Three years ago I was SO fed up with the corruption going on in Las Vegas I got the hell out of there.

The police department(s) had become nothing more than major revenue generators.

I saw people in Jaguars and Audi's being pulled over for stupid stuff like not signaling before changing lanes at the same time a beat up car carrying half a dozen Mexicans, not wearing seat belts, music blaring, smog erupting from the tail pipe like crazy, going on their merry way.

It quickly became obvious to me that the probability of COLLECTING money from the former versus COSTING money from the latter played a major role in who the cop chose to pull over.

Las Vegas is Las Vegas.

After 9-11 happened, I no longer believe that I am a good source of knowledge concerning the inner workings of the police agencies. I have my own anger issues about what I see happening with the police and I write about those issues elsewhere online.

We are all in trouble here. The police are being led by police chiefs and sheriffs who do not serve the people, but rather they serve the New World Order. I encourage people to own at least one firearm and I encourage them to try to educate the police. The police officers are being fed non-stop propaganda by their own agencies and it's not likely that most of them know it.

Get a gun.

Educate the police.

Try to control your anger.
